Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Azam is a key strategic partner in helping to realise the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which aims to propel Sarawak towards economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. 'Azam Sarawak's role has become increasingly significant in supporting the state government's development strategy through inclusive communication approaches that resonate with all levels of society,' he said at Azam 'Begawai Chara Kitai' here yesterday. He said Azam not only helps to disseminate development messages but also empowers Sarawakians to embrace opportunities, understand their responsibilities, and take ownership of Sarawak's development journey. Uggah noted that while Sarawak achieved high-income status as a region in 2023, well ahead of the 2030 target, efforts must now focus on ensuring that the people themselves enjoy high incomes and improved quality of life. 'This is where Azam can help. The agency can play a critical role in educating and encouraging Sarawakians to seize the opportunities created under PCDS 2030,' he said. Uggah also paid tribute to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his strategic leadership and courage in ensuring that Sarawak's development stays on track. 'Today, Sarawak is implementing infrastructure projects worth RM30 billion, fully funded by the state government. These include the construction of 16 major bridges across Sarawak, such as the 4.8km Batang Lupar Bridge, which is the longest river-crossing bridge in Malaysia, scheduled for completion by the end of this year,' he said. He also highlighted the state's unprecedented revenue growth from RM6.76 billion in 2017 to RM14.1 billion in 2024, as well as the record RM15.8 billion state budget for 2025. He attributed these achievements to Sarawak's political stability under GPS, the government's development-centric focus, and strong racial and religious harmony, which he described as the envy of other states in Malaysia. 'Let us all work together, unite our hearts and minds, and support Premier Abang Johari's efforts in leading Sarawak into a prosperous future,' he said. Among those present during the event were Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol and Azam Sarawak chairman Datu William Patrick Nyigor. MIRI (June 11): Sarawak's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is expected to exceed 5 per cent by the end of this year, driven by strategic investments in infrastructure and green technology, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He attributed the state's strong performance to political stability, the people's unity, and policies implemented by the Sarawak government, which have begun yielding encouraging results. Against the setting of Malaysia's GDP growth forecast of 4.4 to 5.5 per cent, Abang Johari said Sarawak's performance continues to be guided by the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, launched in July 2021 to transform Sarawak from a traditional economy to a new economy, centred on green growth policies. He expressed optimism that the implementation of PCDS 2030 would enable Sarawak to achieve developed and high-income status by 2030, while also ensuring social inclusion and environmental sustainability. 'The almost threefold increase in state revenue, from around RM5 billion eight years ago to RM15 billion last year, gives us the confidence that we can achieve the PCDS 2030 goals,' he said. Abang Johari's speech text was read by his deputy Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the 'Religious and Other Religions Thanksgiving Ceremony', held in conjunction with the state-level official birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Limbang Civic Hall today. Also present were State Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and minister-in-charge of the celebration, Dato Dri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; State Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Arts Performance Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew; and Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata. Meanwhile, a total of RM475 million in aid funds has been provided by Other Religious Affairs Unit (Unifor) to houses of worship, including those of Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, Baha'i, Sikh, and Hinduism, based on the principle of social inclusivity. These funds are meant for their construction projects, repairs, renovations, maintenance, and purchase of equipment and religious tools. 'In addition, Unifor has also provided a total of RM90 million to missionary schools in Sarawak since 2021. This means that RM565 million has been allocated to Unifor by the Sarawak government,' added Abang Johari. Commenting on the event, he said it provides an opportunity for Sarawakians to witness the uniqueness of their culture. 'We are the only region in Malaysia that organises such thanksgiving ceremony as an annual event, held in conjunction with Sarawak's flagship celebrations such as today's event. 'This ceremony reflects the nature of tolerance, inclusiveness, respect, and understanding among our people who come from various religions and beliefs, yet are united in giving thanks and offering prayers for the wellbeing of His Majesty and the Queen,' he said. abang johari economic growth GDP

Package A1A of Second Trunk Road project shows steady progress, says S'wak deputy minister

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, expressed satisfaction with the project's progress, highlighting that it is 0.18 per cent ahead of schedule. 'This reflects the steady work by the contractor and a consistent supply of materials,' he told reporters after a site visit and briefing by Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) at the developer's office here today. He noted that Package A1A is a key component of the broader Second Trunk Road network, which aims to provide an alternative route for residents in coastal and interior areas currently underserved by the Pan Borneo Highway and Coastal Road Network. Aidel also visited the adjacent D3C package, a 7km single carriageway linking Batang Samarahan to Batang Sejingkat. He reported that progress there was generally on track, with actual completion at 23.09 per cent against a scheduled 23.13 per cent. 'There is a very minor delay of 0.04 per cent, but we have advised the contractor to increase their daily supply rate. 'The current rate is slightly below what is required to complete the embankment work efficiently,' he said. He further explained that the Second Trunk Road spans several administrative divisions and will eventually connect Sejingkat to Batang Sadong, Sebuyau, and onward to Betong. Once completed, the road will serve as a direct alternative route for motorists travelling between Sarawak's northern and central coastal regions. Aidel revealed that the full stretch from Batang Samarahan to Batang Sadong measures 23km, consisting of the current 9km A1A package and the upcoming 13km A1B section. 'Plans are also underway to extend a dual carriageway from Batang Sadong to Batang Lupar in Sebuyau, covering another 35km. 'This second trunk road project is designed to complement the Pan Borneo and Coastal Road networks, particularly for areas not directly served by those routes. 'Once completed, it will transform connectivity for people in these regions,' he said. He also pointed out that another key segment – a dual carriageway linking Serian, Gedong, and Samarahan – is currently under construction and expected to bolster regional integration under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). 'When this entire network is completed, including the Second Trunk Road and ongoing developments under 13MP and PCDS 2030, connectivity in this region will be significantly improved,' he said. aidel lariwoo Batang Samarahan bridge Package A1A Second Trunk Road

S'wak pushing for Dayak community progress via free education, rural development

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is committed to enhancing the economic and social standing of the Dayak community through initiatives such as free higher education and the continued development of rural infrastructure. This, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, was in line with the goals outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). He said education remains the most powerful tool to ensure inclusive progress among all communities in Sarawak. "The Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) is expected to cost the state RM300 million in its first year of implementation next year, benefitting around 10,000 students at four state-owned universities. "I believe this initiative will open doors for many Sarawakian youths, especially those from low-income families and rural areas, to pursue degree-level studies in selected fields," he said in his message ahead of the Gawai Dayak 2025 celebration tomorrow. Abang Johari said the programme covers full tuition fees and includes an annual living allowance of RM15,000 for students from households earning RM1,500 and below. He also said Sarawak's revenue has surged to RM15 billion in 2024, compared to RM6 billion eight years ago, enabling the state to intensify efforts in infrastructure development, including the construction of roads, bridges and coastal highways. He said the construction of bridges across the state reflects the state government's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure, thereby facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce and local industrial goods. Meanwhile, the premier said the Sarawak government was considering a proposal to convert 5,000km of decommissioned logging roads, such as those in the Kapit division, into public roads. "If implemented, this plan would greatly improve rural connectivity with a more structured road system," he said.
