Third eye: Scion's romance sparks storm, Congress eyes caste reboot, BJP carries Tulsi in protest

Scion's Love Life Sparks Caste-Political Storm: The latest fraternal feud to spill into the public domain centres on the love life of a high-profile scion and caste dynamics deeply embedded in the state's politics. The scion, often spotted at sports matches, is believed to be in a relationship with a superstar music composer from a prominent family belonging to a caste antithetical to native politics. The composer's family is also perceived to be aligned with a party attempting to make inroads into the Tamil political stronghold . There are concerns that if the alliance materialises, the business house's considerable assets could drift into the rival camp's sphere of influence. Social Justice Pitch to Reflect in PCC Shuffle: Congress plans to walk the talk on social justice with a rejig in Pradesh Congress Committees. Himachal may get a Dalit Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Haryana could see an other backward class ( OBC) face, while Uttarakhand's pick is still being weighed due to existing Dalit leadership in the Congress Legislature Party. 'Tulsi Protest' Over Violence in Bengal: Bengal BJP leaders, including state president Sukanta Majumdar and leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari, have taken to symbolic protests carrying the sacred Tulsi plant to the assembly and party gatherings. The gesture follows the alleged vandalism of a Tulsi Manch during communal clashes at Maheshtala in South 24 Parganas district.

Police involve RWAs in New Town, neighbouring areas for tenant check

Kolkata: Bidhannagar police are reaching out to residents' welfare association (RWA) office bearers of residential housing complexes in New Town and other parts of the commissionerate, asking them to furnish a list of tenants living there and ensure all of them police clearance certificates. If the list does not match the database available with the police, they are calling up the landlords and tenants to immediately fill up a KYC verification form or face a penalty. Last month, Bidhannagar police issued an order requiring all landlords to provide tenant details to local police stations before renting out properties. "Now, a police clearance certificate is a must for every tenant, as well as paying guests staying within our commissionerate jurisdiction, be it in gated complexes or stand-alone houses. We are appealing to all RWAs to help us in this process," said an officer. A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is an official document issued by the police or govt agency of a country to certify that an individual has no criminal record or has not been involved in any criminal activity that resulted in a criminal conviction. Speaking to TOI, RWA office bearers of multiple complexes said they have attended the meetings at police stations and their complexes. "Cops have told us to maintain a database of tenants along with basic details, like names, tower and flat number, number of persons staying in one flat, duration of stay, their occupations, as well as names and phone numbers of brokers and landlords, and submit it to the local police station," said an RWA official from VIP Road. An RWA official from New Town said 25% of the 800 flats in the complex are occupied by tenants, a large share of whom are Bangladeshi. "We are cooperating with cops," he said. Tausif Ali Azhar, DCP, Special Branch of Bidhannagar police, told TOI they have issued notices to 93 landlords for renting properties without submission of PCC and background checks on tenants. "We are giving them 7 days, and if they do not furnish the documents by then, they will be penalised."

Sharmila alleges phone tapping, seeks action against Jagan & KCR

Visakhapatnam: State Congress president YS Sharmila Reddy has made serious allegations regarding phone tapping against former chief ministers YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of AP and K Chandrasekhar Rao of Telangana. She alleged that during her brother Jagan's tenure as CM, her phone, along with her husband's, were under surveillance in Telangana. She called upon the chief ministers of both Telugu states to conduct swift investigations into these claims. During a media interaction here on Wednesday, Sharmila referenced present Rajya Sabha member and her uncle YV Subba Reddy's confirmation of the surveillance. "He confirmed the tapping of my phone. He came to my house in Hyderabad and made me hear an audio conversation from my phone. He may not accept it today. In the past, he had made false allegations against my family on the direction of Jagan, who in an attempt to grab the properties of his own nephew and niece," she said. Sharmila claimed Jagan attempted to "restrict her financially and politically" to favour then-Telangana chief minister KCR. She expressed willingness to swear on the Bible regarding the phone tapping claims. She pointed out that Jagan's association with KCR superseded their sibling relationship. "Phone tapping is a sketch drawn by both CMs Jagan and KCR to suppress me. It's a joint operation and conspiracy by them. Both have an inherent relationship. I will attend wherever the investigation or interrogation of phone tapping takes place if the authorities ask me to attend," the PCC chief said. Addressing questions about her delayed response to the phone tapping, Sharmila said circumstances were different then, and the phone tapping was a lesser concern compared to other atrocities. Sharmila alleged that the phone tapping was part of Jagan's broader strategy to impede her political and financial progress. "They threatened my supporters and forced them to keep away from me. Jagan tried to oppress me to benefit KCR. Forming a party in Telangana is in no way connected to or will bring any loss to Jagan, but he suppressed me for KCR, as both maintained good relations. I fought for my survival, and I don't have any personal grudge. If I wished to lodge a complaint, I would lodge that time. I would have lodged a case against Jagan when he had filed a case against our mother, Vijayamma, over the property given to her," Sharmila said.

Congress begins restructuring of block units across Rajasthan

The Opposition Congress in Rajasthan has initiated an organisational exercise to constitute block committees across all Assembly constituencies and fill vacant posts in a bid to strengthen the party's structure ahead of the local body elections. While 80% of the block committees have been formed, the appointment of District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents will be carried out by the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Govind Singh Dotasra, who met Assembly coordinators from the State's seven divisions on Monday and Tuesday, said that a list of booth-level agents would be finalised within the next seven days. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had directed the State leadership during the Samvidhan Bachao rally held on April 28 to complete all pending appointments within two months. Mr. Dotasra said the party would allocate 50% of tickets in the upcoming urban local body and Panchayati Raj elections to candidates below the age of 50. 'This will help us in confronting the Bharatiya Janata Party government which is neither focused on people's welfare nor interested in continuing the schemes launched by the previous [Congress] regime,' he said. Around two dozen Pradesh Congress cells and departments, which were dissolved during the 2020 political crisis triggered by former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot's rebellion, are yet to be reconstituted. Though eight new district units were created in April, their respective heads are yet to be appointed. Mr. Dotasra said City Congress units would be set up in all 249 Municipal Council areas across the State, aimed at reinforcing the party's presence at the grassroots level. These units will encompass both urban and rural regions within the blocks, with committee formation expected to be completed before June 28. The PCC chief stated that the party had collected feedback on the activities of Assembly coordinators, their constituency visits, meeting attendance by senior leaders, and the public issues raised by elected representatives in panchayats and local bodies. This input, he said, would aid in achieving the organisational targets within the stipulated time. Mr. Dotasra held one-on-one interactions with coordinators from Jaipur, Udaipur, and Kota divisions on Monday, and with those from Bharatpur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner divisions on Tuesday. He directed them to follow the party's schedule of activities and ensure that block committees play a key role in the forthcoming local body and panchayat elections.
