Jets' 5 biggest salary cap hits in 2025

The New York Jets currently possess roughly $36.7 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap. That's fourth-most in the entire league. General manager Darren Mougey is slated to enter training camp with an abundance of financial flexibility. With that in mind, we've analyzed the five biggest scheduled cap hits on the 2025 Jets. Quinnen Williams, DT Unsurprisingly, Quinnen Williams holds the Jets' largest cap charge by far at $21.5 million. Williams is on a four-year, $96 million extension that runs through the 2027 campaign. New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is expecting him to be dominant throughout 2025. Alijah Vera-Tucker, IOL Right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker arguably enjoyed his most effective season in 2024. That's good timing, because the fifth-year option is slated to pay the 2021 first-round pick a fully-guaranteed $15.3 million. Vera-Tucker will hope to sign a lucrative extension in East Rutherford. Sauce Gardner, CB Despite still being on his rookie contract, cornerback Sauce Gardner has the Jets' third-largest cap hit at $10.6 million. The Jets have already triggered his fifth-year option next year at $20.1 million. Gardner is eligible to sign an extension and could get a record-breaking deal this offseason. Quincy Williams, LB Veteran linebacker Quincy Williams is on a modest three-year, $18 million extension signed in 2023. Williams' cap charge is a modest $8 million, fourth-biggest on the team. This is a contract year for the former Murray State standout. Justin Fields, QB The Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency to be the team's bridge starting quarterback. Fields' cap charge is $8 million this campaign, and is set to significantly increase to $23 million next offseason. Mougey structured the contract with void years through 2031 to minimize the financial impact.

New projections don't have the Saints getting a comp pick in 2026

New projections don't have the Saints getting a comp pick in 2026 The NFL keeps a tight lid on its compensatory draft picks formula, but one of the analysts who has come closest to cracking the code is Over The Cap's Nick Korte. And while Korte initially projected the New Orleans Saints to receive a fourth-round comp pick in the 2026 draft for losing Paulson Adebo in free agency, his updated predictions don't have them getting that pick. What changed? "The Saints will have a decision on whether to play Isaac Yiadom as a starter or heavy contributor at cornerback, a position the team looks to be shallow in," Korte wrote at OTC. "But if they do, the tradeoff will be sacrificing a 4th rounder for a corner that left them in free agency, Paulson Adebo." Comp picks are calculated, in Korte's reverse-engineered formula, by two factors: contract value and playtime. If Yiadom hits a certain threshold for snaps played, which would happen if he starts 17 games this season, the Saints wouldn't get that fourth rounder in next year's draft. If he doesn't beat someone like Rico Payton or Quincy Riley (a rookie fourth-round pick) to run in the starting lineup with Alontae Taylor and Kool-Aid McKinstry? Then New Orleans should expect to get that fourth rounder after all. One complicating factor? The Saints have been looking into veteran cornerbacks still on the market like Asante Samuel Jr., who is expected to sign with a new team after medical rechecks in July. Samuel could expect to walk into the room and start right away over Yiadom, a career backup, and a couple of first- and second-year pros. The Saints took a big bet on Chase Young after his neck injury last year, so maybe they're willing to do so again with another veteran defender. At the same time, the Saints shouldn't let what may be the 138th or 140th pick in next year's draft decide who their starting cornerbacks should be. If Yiadom is a better option than his competition, roll with him. The Saints re-signed him for a reason. If he isn't able to cut the mustard? Go with someone else. But with the team in such a state of transition and with the corners playing under so much scrutiny after Adebo and Marshon Lattimore were let go in the last year, this decision is going to carry a ton of weight all season long. Here are the picks the Saints currently own in the 2026 draft, per Tankathon's projections:

Does Aaron Rodgers accelerate Steelers' Jonnu Smith trade interest?

Does Aaron Rodgers accelerate Steelers' Jonnu Smith trade interest? It's been quiet on the Jonnu Smith front. After an initial report that the Miami Dolphins had engaged in trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers involving tight end Jonnu Smith, there's been some twists and turns since. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on June 3 during the Dolphins' OTAs that the Steelers were not expected to trade for Smith. Then, later that same day, the Steelers reportedly reignited trade talks surrounding Smith. Now that the Steelers signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, is there more urgency for Pittsburgh to try to get a deal done and to get another weapon in tow quickly? That would certainly seem logical. Rodgers currently has wide receivers DK Metcalf and Calvin Austin III and tight end Pat Freiermuth as his top pass-catchers to work with. But, the Steelers' brass knows that it needs to bring in more talent for its 41-year-old veteran signal-caller. CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones discussed the Steelers' skill position pursuit on a recent episode of the "Pushing the Pile" podcast. "They're going to have to get another pass-catcher. I don't know if that's a wide receiver and I don't know if that's a tight end. They're going to have to get a pass-catcher and they know that. They've been lowballing teams when they make a call. 'Hey, how about this guy? No, we're not doing that for a conditional sixth-round pick.' They'll get there," Jones said of the Steelers' front office. After inking Rodgers to a one-year, $13.6 million contract, the Steelers have $18.8 million in effective cap space per Over The Cap. Pittsburgh currently has $87.1 million and $184.6 million in effective cap space in 2026 and 2027 according to Over The Cap. Though the Steelers haven't made an enticing enough offer yet to pry Smith away from the Dolphins, that's a good bit of financial flexibility for Pittsburgh to operate with if it does strike a deal with Miami and then wants to keep Smith longterm. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Smith is asking for a substantially larger sum of money. Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said in early June that Miami is still Smith's first choice, though. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa shared his stance on Smith's future in Miami during minicamp, indicating he'd like Miami to lock in Smith for the future. "Oh 100%, that's my guy. That's my dog. Jonnu has done really good for us. I have nothing bad to say about him. I love him as a person, too, outside of football. I think all of our guys that do what they need to do, they should get paid," Tagovailoa said Tuesday from the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp in Miami Gardens. Smith is coming off a career season in which he hauled in 88 passes for 884 yards and eight scores. All of those numbers set new single-season Dolphins records for a Miami tight end. That's plenty of incentive for Miami to keep Smith around. But, with Smith's absence from the Dolphins' minicamp and the Steelers looking for weapons to win right now, that potential trade link remains worth monitoring.

Tyreek Hill trade rumors: David Carr suggests shocking Patriots move that could backfire on Dolphins

Former Houston Texans quarterback and current NFL analyst David Carr is stirring the trade rumor pot with a bold idea that could shake up the AFC East: sending Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the New England Patriots. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While nothing official has surfaced from Miami, Carr's proposal has sparked conversations around what such a move could mean for a rebuilding Patriots team — and why it might make financial sense for the Dolphins. A potential Tyreek Hill trade to the Patriots raises eyebrows and possibilities David Carr didn't hold back in his analysis of Hill's situation heading into the 2025 NFL season. Despite Hill recently backtracking on his comments about wanting to leave Miami, Carr sees smoke behind the scenes. "The star receiver publicly expressed a desire to play elsewhere, an idea the Dolphins nixed and Hill himself quickly backtracked on," Carr noted. "However, I'm not convinced Miami will keep him, considering his off-field issues and the fact that the franchise can save nearly $15 million by moving him, per Over The Cap." While trading a superstar like Hill within the division is always risky, Carr believes the Patriots could be the perfect landing spot for the 30-year-old speedster. How Tyreek Hill could instantly change the trajectory of New England's offense With rookie quarterback Drake Maye under center and Josh McDaniels calling the plays, the Patriots have revamped their offensive identity. Adding Tyreek Hill would be a statement move that signals they're serious about contending — not just rebuilding. "The Patriots and Drake Maye certainly could use Hill's services in the passing attack. New England has admirably overhauled the offense this offseason, and Hill would continue that trend by giving Josh McDaniels a guy who can elevate his attack to the next level due to his speed and field-stretching ability," Carr added. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Hill's 2024 stats — 81 receptions, 959 yards, and six touchdowns — show he's still a game-changing weapon, even if slightly below his usual production. His explosive ability could open up the field for Maye and give New England the deep threat it sorely lacks. Also Read: As of now, there's no official indication that the Dolphins are shopping Tyreek Hill. But with financial considerations looming and the team perhaps looking toward the future, Carr's suggestion isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. If Miami decides to make a surprise move, New England could emerge as the most intriguing — and controversial — destination.
