Chappell Roan reflects on backlash after Outside Lands debut: ‘It makes me cry'
It's been nearly a year since Chappell Roan scolded Outside Lands festivalgoers in the VIP section for thinking they're 'way too cool' to dance during her set at Golden Gate Park. Now the singer is sharing how the subsequent backlash took an emotional toll. 'I didn't realize I'd care so much,' Roan said in conversation with R&B singer SZA for Interview Magazine published Tuesday, June 17. 'When it comes to my art, I'm like, 'Bitch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.' But when it comes to me and my personality, it's like, 'Damn. Am I the most insufferable bitch of our generation?'' The 'Pink Pony Club' singer experienced a meteoric rise to fame last summer following the release of her debut album, 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.' It led to her highly-anticipated main stage Outside Lands festival debut, which attracted a reported 50,000 for her afternoon set. But a clip of Roan calling out fans in the VIP section of Outside Lands for not joining in on the choreographed 'Hot To Go!' dance — a 'YMCA'-style routine she taught mid-set — went viral last August, fueling criticism of her personality. While she said she has been able to brush off musical critiques, she admitted that the more personal criticisms have been harder to cope with. Roan — whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz — quickly made headlines for being outspoken, whether snapping at disrespectful fans and photographers or standing up for LGBTQ+ rights. She responded by sharing several social media videos airing her grievances with sudden fame, explaining that she felt 'unsafe' and wanted to 'set boundaries' with fans. But some interpreted her remarks as the singer being ungrateful. 'When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make,'' she told SZA. 'I give a f— and it makes me cry. I don't know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.' Though she spent some time out of the public eye after winning her first Grammy Award at the start of the year, Roan is working on her sophomore album and has returned to the festival circuit. During recent appearances, she has even reportedly performed her new country-tinged song, 'The Giver.' Her next festival set is scheduled for Aug. 6 in Oslo, Norway at Øyafestivalen.

Bonnaroo 2025 cancelled after just one night due to severe storms days after co-founder's death
The remainder of music festival Bonnaroo has been cancelled due to weather just days after the death of one of its co-founders. Set to run through Sunday at Bonnaroo Farm in Manchester, Tennessee, the music festival was cancelled Friday evening after hours of delays and even an evacuation notice. 'Today, the National Weather Service provided us with an updated forecast with significant and steady precipitation that will produce deteriorating camping and egress conditions in the coming days,' Bonnaroo shared via Instagram. 'We are beyond gutted, but we must make the safest decision and cancel the remainder of Bonnaroo.' The festival promised at least partial refunds for all ticket holders, many of whom paid hundreds of dollars to attend. Luke Combs was the only of the four headliners to deliver a performance. He took the stage Thursday night and performed alongside fellow country star Miranda Lambert onstage, as well as Marcus King and Jon Bellion. The other headliners, Tyler, the Creator, Olivia Rodrigo and Hozier, have all had their sets cancelled. Additional performers slated to take the stage included Vampire Weekend, GloRilla, Tyla, Avril Lavigne, Queens of the Stone Age, John Summit, Dom Dolla, and Glass Animals. 'We have put our hearts and souls into making this weekend the most special one of the year, and cannot express how crushed we are to have made this decision,' Bonnaroo's statement concluded. 'Thank you in advance for your patience, your positivity and your unfailing Bonnaroovian spirit.' Many fans were disappointed by the cancellation, with some noting it wasn't the first time in recent years attendees found themselves in this situation. 'Wondering what this means for the future of bonnaroo honestly. 3 cancellations in 5 years isn't looking good for us,' one fan wrote on Instagram. 'First and last bonnaroo. Absolute s*** show, not to mention not a speck of rain was seen after they cancelled,' another shared, while someone else agreed: 'Literally spent THOUSANDS of dollars flying from Hawaii……. first roo and most likely my last.' The fan-favorite festival's last minute cancellation came days after the death of one of its co-founders. Jonathan Mayers, who helped create a number of major American festivals, died earlier this week at 51. No cause of death has yet been announced. In a statement to Billboard, Red Light Management founder Coran Capshaw said: 'This is incredibly tough news for so many of us. Jon was the creative force behind so much of what people experience at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, and many other events over the years. We're all really going to miss him.' Mayers co-founded promotions company Superfly with partners Rick Farman, Richard Goodstone and Kerry Black in 1996. They hosted their first concert during Mardi Gras. The four worked together to launch Bonnaroo in 2002 after securing the festival site on farmland in Manchester, an hour outside of Nashville. They worked closely with Capshaw's Red Light Management and other industry figures to book headliners, including the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. In 2008, Mayers partnered with Another Planet Entertainment to create the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Mayers left Superfly acrimoniously in 2021, and the following year sued his former partners Farman, Goodstone and Black, accusing them of civil misrepresentation, breach of contract and fraud. Mayers alleged that they had misrepresented the value of his shares in the promotions company. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2023. Superfly said in a statement to Billboard: 'We are heartbroken with the passing of Jonathan. He was a cherished part of Superfly's story, woven into it's history and legacy. In addition to the role he's played in bringing joy to millions, we will miss his razor sharp wit, infectious smile and contagious laugh. No one could light up a room like Jon.'

Jonathan Mayers, Concert Promoter and Bonnaroo Co-Founder, Dies at 51
Jonathan Mayers, a concert promoter who co-founded the music festivals Bonnaroo and helped create Outside Lands as a principal at Superfly Entertainment, has died. He was 51. The cause of death is as yet unknown. The news arrives as the three-day Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is set to kick off Thursday with headliner Luke Combs. Mayers' first job was working with New Orleans' legendary Tipitina's and the city's Jazz Fest. Superfly then went on to stage its first concert with the Meters, Maceo Parker and Rebirth Brass Band during Mardi Gras. Mayers partnered with AC Entertainment's Ashley Caps, Paradigm agent Chip Hooper and Red Light manager Coran Capshaw to launch Bonnaroo. Featuring headliners like Phish's Trey Anastasio and members of the Grateful Dead and annually drawing crowds of more than 70,000, it has become the model for the modern music festival. Superfly launched Vegoose festival in Las Vegas in 2005, then partnered with Another Planet to launch Outside Lands in San Francisco's fabled Golden Gate Park. In 2017, Mayers partnered with Viacom and Comedy Central to produce a comedy festival dubbed Clusterfest, which included the likes of Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah. Mayers' innovative promotion approach included re-creating sets from iconic TV shows like Seinfeld, The Office and The Daily Show offering immersive fan experiences, including a Friends pop-up of one of its sets in New York, Boston and Atlanta. Mayers left Superfly in August 2021 and sued his ex-partners in early 2022, accusing them of breach of contract and fraud for underestimating the value of his ownership in the company. The lawsuit was dismissed in January 2023. Since leaving Superfly, Mayers worked on Core City Detroit, a project which sought funds to invest in the inner city, creating a music campus with entertainment experiences for the public. His longtime friend, Dayglo Presents and Brooklyn Bowl founder Peter Shapiro, told The Hollywood Reporter: 'People use the word visionary a lot in our business, but Jonathan Mayers was the real deal when it came to imagining what something new could be. It takes courage to lean into doing something that could crash and fail. And that is how Jonathan Mayers broke down real barriers and created some next level music festivals that impacted a generation of fans, bands and promoters.' Another Planet Entertainment issued a statement describing Mayers as 'a bright light, always pushing new and creative ideas in the entertainment space. Everyone in the Another Planet family will miss him dearly.'
