Yayasan Sime Darby to support school under Madani initiative with four-pronged focus
PUTRAJAYA: Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) is committed to uplifting education for underprivileged students through its participation in the government's Sekolah Angkat Madani initiative, with efforts anchored on four key areas. Its chief executive officer Dr Yatela Zainal Abidin said the four focus areas include improving school infrastructure and basic facilities; providing professional development for teachers; offering academic guidance for students; and nurturing character and leadership qualities among students. "This is about more than just facilities. It is also about empowering teachers to transform their schools, helping students excel academically, and fostering their leadership skills," she said after the launch of the initiative today. She said 31 schools across 11 states have been adopted under YSD, benefiting around 16,000 students, most of whom come from B40 communities in rural and remote areas. "We are proud to be part of the Sekolah Angkat Madani initiative. "The majority of these schools are located in remote areas, involving Orang Asli schools, Chinese and Tamil primary schools (SJKC and SJKT), and other underserved communities," she said. Yatela said YSD would collaborate with each school to identify its key needs, whether upgrading facilities or offering character development opportunities that students might miss without external assistance. She also said the schools are spread across the country, covering 11 states — including Kedah, Perak, Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Selangor, with Selangor having the largest number. She added that the initiative reflects meaningful synergy between government agencies, government-linked companies, corporate partners, non-governmental organisations, and local communities. "This collaboration is valuable because it brings together resources not just from corporate organisations like us, but also from NGOs who can assist in developing students' character and supporting the professional development of teachers to become agents of change," she said. She also expressed hope that the collective effort from all stakeholders would create lasting, positive impacts on both the schools and their surrounding communities. "God willing, with this support system, we can help these students and schools thrive," she said.

PUTRAJAYA: The status of the review study on the amendment of Act 134 was among the matters discussed during the Orang Asli Consultative Council (MAPOA) 2025 meeting held yesterday, according to the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). In a statement today, the department said the meeting also addressed issues such as Orang Asli settlement land, the community's educational progress, and the recognition of traditional medical practices. The MAPOA 2025 meeting, held yesterday in Bangi, was chaired by Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang. The event brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from the federal and state governments, Orang Asli tribes, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academia, professionals, women, youth and Orang Asli community leaders. MAPOA serves as a platform for Orang Asli representatives and stakeholders at the federal and state levels to present views on development issues involving the community in Peninsular Malaysia. It also provides a space for Orang Asli representatives and stakeholders, including agencies at the federal and state levels, to contribute views and feedback on policies and strategies aimed at developing the Orang Asli community.

MOHE: 150,557 SPM 2024 leavers offered places at IPTA
PUTRAJAYA — A total of 150,557 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 leavers have been offered places at public higher learning institutions (IPTA), the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) announced today. It said the number represents 67.33 per cent of the total 223,624 applications received through the UPUOnline system. 'Of the total, 86,589 applicants were offered places at public universities, 42,058 at polytechnics, 20,427 at community colleges and 1,483 at institutions under the MARA Higher Education Division. 'A total of 17,693 applicants received offers under the special pathway, comprising 16,189 from the B40 group, 590 persons with disabilities, 593 athletes and 321 Orang Asli,' it said in a statement. The ministry also said that 43 applicants from institutions under the Social Welfare Department were offered places at IPTA. 'Student admissions were based on the principle of meritocracy, with all qualified candidates ranked from the highest to the lowest merit score,' the statement read. A total of 349 academic programmes were offered this year, comprising 41 certificate-level, 55 foundation, 252 diploma and one bachelor's degree programme. Applicants who did not receive an offer may submit an appeal via UPUOnline within 10 days, starting today until 5pm on June 25. — BERNAMA
