‘Stop Diarrhoea campaign-2025' launched in Chittoor

In-charge Collector G. Vidyadhari on Monday launched the 'Stop Diarrhoea Campaign-2025' with an aim to eliminate casualties among children due to diarrhoeal diseases. The Intensified Diarrhoeal Control Fortnight (IDCF) is the nodal agency implementing the project. Releasing the campaign posters at the Collectorate, Ms. Vidyadhari said that children under five are highly vulnerable to waterborne diseases, leading to fatalities. She directed the medical, paramedical staff, and the field staff of the ICDS to take up door-to-door surveys and list children in the target age group, besides initiating awareness campaigns from June 16 to July 31. The In-charge Collector urged the parents to ensure that their children receive rotavirus vaccination. She directed medical officers of all the primary health centres, and Anganwadi centres to set up ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) corners. 'Any child with symptoms of diarrhoea should be given ORS and zinc tablets for 14 days to prevent a recurrence, and if needed should be immediately shifted to referral or higher medical institutions,' Ms. Vidyadhari said.

Dehydration isn't just a summer problem - Here's why Oral Rehydration Solution is a year-round essential

Dehydration isn't just a summer problem - Here's why Oral Rehydration Solution is a year-round essential Dehydration is a major health concern that is often ignored and only paid attention to in conditions like diarrhoea, vomiting, or extreme heat exhaustion. Often underestimated, dehydration can quickly become life-threatening. For common understanding, dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. This loss may happen due to illness (such as diarrhoea or vomiting), excessive sweating, or simply not drinking enough water. Common symptoms include dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and reduced urine output. It is also important to understand that dehydration is not confined to any particular season and needs to be addressed in a timely manner. Recognising the signs and symptoms of dehydration, and taking steps to prevent and treat it, is crucial for maintaining good health—needless to mention, with due advice from your medical practitioner. A simple solution to address this big problem of dehydration is Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). It is important to know and take note that an ORS approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) has a balanced mix of salts and sugars, with an osmolarity of 245 mosmol/litre. A WHO-approved ORS will always have the osmolarity written on the pack label, and it is important to identify this. This combination optimises the absorption of fluid and electrolytes, which helps quickly restore and replenish the loss. Contrary to popular belief, high-sugar beverages can worsen dehydration rather than relieve it. These drinks can draw water out of the body, intensifying the feeling of thirst and leaving individuals even more dehydrated. That's why it's important to choose scientifically formulated solutions like Oral Rehydration Solution, which are designed to rehydrate effectively. Today, there's a lot of misleading communication in the market that can confuse consumers—many products are labelled with 'ORS' but don't meet the World Health Organisation's recommended formulation. This can lead people to choose products that don't actually provide the right balance of electrolytes and glucose needed to treat dehydration effectively. It's essential to educate consumers on identifying genuine, scientifically backed ORS solutions. Managing dehydration effectively means more than just drinking water—it's about consuming the right balance of fluid and electrolytes. A scientifically formulated Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) contains the ideal mix of glucose and electrolytes that help your body absorb water quickly and restore lost fluids and salts. Choosing the right Oral Rehydration Solution can make a real difference in how fast you recover from dehydration. Covid-19 preparedness heightened in Meerut as CMO issues directives

Following a rise in Covid-19 cases in Ghaziabad and Noida, the health authorities in Meerut issued a high alert on Monday, directing all medical facilities to remain fully prepared. Chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Ashok Kataria has instructed hospitals, diagnostic labs, and private practitioners to stay on standby in anticipation of a possible outbreak in the region. While no Covid cases have been reported in Meerut so far, Dr Kataria emphasised that precautionary measures are being taken seriously in view of the recent surge across the state and country. 'While Meerut has not reported any cases yet, we are strictly adhering to the latest Covid guidelines. All previous arrangements are in place and are being further reinforced,' he stated. Dr Kataria informed that district's oxygen infrastructure is fully prepared for any potential surge. Meerut currently has 17 fully operational oxygen plants, approximately 2,000 oxygen concentrators, and a similar number of oxygen cylinders in reserve. 'These resources are being maintained to ensure timely treatment in accordance with protocol if cases start to rise,' he added. The hospitals have also been advised to scale up testing efforts and ensure all facilities are equipped to handle Covid diagnosis and treatment. The CMO highlighted that the symptoms of the new Covid variant—primarily cough, cold, and fever—are similar to those of earlier strains, and urged the public to take them seriously. 'Anyone experiencing these symptoms should wear a mask and avoid close contact with others. Similarly, those coming into contact with symptomatic individuals should also wear masks,' Dr Kataria advised. Initiative to tackle heatwave risks The administration has launched an initiative to address the intensifying heatwave. The health department has set 40°C as the threshold temperature for heatstroke risks. To combat this, ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) corners have been set up in hospitals and government offices, and cold rooms have been arranged in district hospitals and medical colleges. Additionally, stocks of paracetamol tablets are being maintained in readiness. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate by adhering to guidelines and staying vigilant.

As per the directive, "an adequate supply of clean drinking water must be readily accessible to students at all times. RO systems and water coolers must be maintained in proper working order." Scheduled water breaks have also been made a part of the class routine to encourage students to drink water regularly throughout the day. Schools have also been directed to ensure that all classrooms are ventilated and equipped with functional fans to maintain a cooler indoor environment. The guidelines further stress that "functional fire extinguishers are installed in all corridors, adhering to fire department specifications," reinforcing the need for strict fire safety compliance. Regarding sun protection, the circular advises schools to "sensitise students on the importance of covering their heads (using umbrellas, hats, caps, towels, or other traditional headgear) during direct sun exposure, particularly while commuting to and from school during the day." Additionally, it strictly instructs that "no student, parent, or staff member shall stay or sit in open or exposed areas under direct sunlight." Health preparedness has been given utmost priority. "Any instance of heat-related illness must be addressed promptly. First Aid kits should include Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) for students exhibiting symptoms. All cases of heat-related illness must be reported to the nearest health facility or hospital," the circular states. The Directorate has reiterated that "all other existing safety measures and hygienic conditions must be consistently maintained." Deputy directors of education at the district and zone levels have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance across all schools.
