Opus 2 leads AI litigation management in major law firms survey

Research from the Strategic Knowledge & Innovation Legal Leaders Summit (SKILLS) has found Opus 2 to be the most widely adopted AI solution for litigation management among large law firms. The survey involved 100 knowledge and innovation leaders from some of the largest law firms, examining the use of AI across 20 legal functions. Of the 60 firms currently using or considering AI solutions for litigation management, nearly half reported adopting Opus 2 Cases as their tool of choice. This is five times the number of users reported for the next closest competitor in the segment. According to SKILLS, the research reveals a significant upward trend in the use of AI to support legal practice. This adoption encompasses areas such as case management, preparation, and litigation strategy, with the data indicating Opus 2's prominence in the field. Survey findings "In a rapidly evolving legal landscape, the SKILLS Legal AI Use Cases survey report is aimed to show how leading law firms are actually using AI," said Oz Benamram, Founder of SKILLS. "The results show that knowledge and innovation leaders are investing in AI across a wide range of valuable use cases, including litigation management - where Opus 2 is the most used solution." The findings are based on feedback from innovation leaders who are actively engaged in steering their firms towards greater AI implementation. The research considered the number of current users and firms weighing the introduction of AI solutions for litigation-related activities. Opus 2's adoption rate, which outpaced competitors by a considerable margin, was highlighted as evidence of an industry-wide shift towards more AI-driven, collaborative litigation processes. Use cases and capability Opus 2 Cases is described as an AI-enabled platform for managing the complete litigation lifecycle. It brings AI tools to core tasks such as document analysis, summarisation, witness profiling, transcript management, and data organisation. Law firms can leverage the software to extract key details from large volumes of documents, automate the creation of case chronologies, and centralise collaboration within legal teams. The software is intended to support, rather than replace, legal professionals in their roles. According to the company's description, users can use AI features to summarise files, structure and search data, and identify relevant people, organisations, events, and themes. This, the company asserts, allows lawyers and litigation staff to "work smarter and more efficiently" while retaining full oversight and control over case strategy. Industry recognition Opus 2 Cases has received several accolades in recognition of its function and uptake within the legal technology space. The platform was recently named Solution Provider of the Year by the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA). Additionally, Opus 2 Cases was awarded a Gold Medal in the American Business Awards, also referred to as the Stevie Awards, for Best Legal Solution. It also received the CODiE Award for Best Legal Solution and has been shortlisted for other awards, including Excellence in Litigation Technology at the European Legal Innovation & Technology Awards and Best Technology Product at The Lawyer Awards. Opus 2 was a finalist in last year's Cloud Awards and SaaS Awards. Adoption and outlook The survey indicates a period of rapid change as law firms adapt to new digital tools and AI-enabled platforms to address the mounting complexity of litigation. Opus 2 states that its solution is now trusted for thousands of legal proceedings worldwide, with an emphasis on facilitating collaboration, minimising inefficiencies, and reinforcing data security during case preparation and management. The results from SKILLS suggest a growing willingness among legal industry leaders to invest in AI tools when they align with established workflows and can demonstrate tangible benefits for staff and clients alike.

From e-filing to virtual hearings, the collaboration promises to reshape how disputes are handled in the region, making arbitration more accessible, cost-effective, and future-ready. In this interview, Jehad Kazim, executive director of DIAC, shares how these innovations will transform the dispute resolution landscape and support businesses, including SMEs, in navigating legal challenges, and her role as a female leader. As the first Emirati woman to lead DIAC, how do you see your role in shaping the future of dispute resolution in the region? I want to keep strengthening the role of DIAC as a forward-thinking, innovative, and inclusive institution. One of my key priorities is to foster collaboration between institutions, governments, and businesses to enhance the region's dispute resolution framework. What are some of the most common disputes handled by DIAC, and how do you ensure quick and efficient resolutions? DIAC handles a wide range of disputes across key sectors such as construction, real estate, energy, finance, and technology. These industries are the backbone of the MEASA region's economy, and the disputes they generate often involve complex and high-value claims. When it comes to contract types, construction contracts are the most common, accounting for 40 per cent of cases in 2023. Real estate and property contracts follow closely, with disputes typically arising from lease agreements, property sales, or development projects. Other frequent contract types include service and provider agreements, sales and purchase agreements, and partnership and ownership contracts. To provide parties with quick and efficient solutions, the 2022 DIAC Arbitration Rules introduced expedited proceedings to allow parties to resolve disputes faster and at a lower cost, which is particularly beneficial for small-value or straightforward cases. Our panel of arbitrators includes experts with deep industry knowledge, ensuring that disputes are resolved by professionals who understand the nuances of each sector and contract type. How does DIAC support businesses, particularly SMEs, in resolving disputes effectively? SMEs are vital to the regional economy, but they often face unique challenges when it comes to dispute resolution. Limited financial and legal resources can make traditional arbitration daunting. Our panel of arbitrators includes professionals with expertise in industries relevant to SMEs, ensuring that disputes are resolved by individuals who understand their commercial realities. The newly introduced virtual hearings and under-development digital tools reduce logistical burdens and costs, making arbitration more accessible for SMEs with limited resources. Additionally, mediation offers a collaborative and cost-effective alternative, helping parties reach amicable settlements without the animosity and time delays of traditional legal proceedings. By providing reliable and efficient dispute resolution services, we ensure that SMEs can navigate disputes effectively while focusing on their core business activities. With the rise of AI and digital case management, how do you see technology shaping the future of arbitration? The potential of AI and digital case management to transform arbitration is immense. DIAC is actively exploring how these technologies can enhance the dispute resolution process; we are closely monitoring its development and considering how it can be applied to improve efficiency, transparency, and accessibility. AI has the potential to automate routine tasks, freeing up time for arbitrators and legal teams to focus on more complex aspects of a case. Predictive analytics could also provide insights into case trends, helping parties make more informed decisions. Digital case management platforms, like the one we're developing with Opus 2, are already streamlining processes by centralising filings, submissions, and communications. These tools reduce delays and ensure all parties have real-time access to case updates, fostering greater transparency and trust. Looking ahead, we see virtual hearings becoming even more sophisticated, making arbitration more accessible to parties across the globe. Blockchain technology could further enhance security, transparency and automation. While still in the early stages of adoption, blockchain can revolutionise arbitration. What challenges do businesses typically face in arbitration, and what advice would you give to those unfamiliar with the process? Businesses often face challenges in arbitration due to unclear dispute resolution clauses, unfamiliarity with procedural rules, and concerns about costs and delays. To navigate these challenges effectively, taking a proactive and strategic approach is essential. Start by drafting clear and comprehensive arbitration clauses in contracts. Specify the arbitral institution (for example, DIAC), the arbitration rules governing the proceedings, the number of arbitrators, the seat of arbitration, the language of the arbitration and the governing law of contract to avoid procedural uncertainties. Leverage institutional support.
