GOF foils attempt to smuggle 19,000kg of white rice from Thailand
KOTA BHARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 19,000kg of white rice from Thailand along Jalan Kampung Air Gatal, Tanah Merah, as part of the 'Ops Taring Wawasan' operations on Friday (June 20). GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure was made after a GOF's 9th Battalion team spotted several men loading white sacks into the back of a trailer. "However, all the suspects fled into nearby bushes upon realising the presence of the police," he said in a statement on Saturday (June 21). He said an inspection of the trailer found 19,000kg of white rice, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand and intended for sale on the local market. "The seized rice, along with the trailer, is estimated to be worth RM426,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority for further action," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Paddy and Rice Act 1994. Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said that in a separate operation, his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 11 cows after intercepting a lorry being driven suspiciously in Kampung Telaga Bata, Tumpat, last Thursday (June 19). "An inspection found 11 cows in the back of the lorry, and the driver failed to produce any valid documentation for the livestock. The driver, a 28-year-old local man, was arrested," he said. He added that the total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM151,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Department of Veterinary Services for further action and is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. – Bernama

Cops bust illegal sand mining activity in Kelantan
KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) of the Royal Malaysian Police has cracked down on illegal sand mining activities in a river near Kampung Pahi, Kuala Krai. GOF South-East Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Kota Baru Land and Mines Office under Ops Taring Wawasan around 4.15pm on Sunday. He said the inspection found that the activities were carried out by three local men and three Bangladeshis, who failed to show valid permits or documents for sand extraction. 'The police detained and seized all equipment and machinery, such as sand suction vessels, excavators, lorries and other equipment used to move sand estimated at RM2mil. 'The case is being investigated under Section 426 of the National Land Code 1965. 'The suspects and the seized items were handed over to the Kota Baru Land and Mines office for further action,' he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. Commenting further, Nik Ros Azhan said the GOF also foiled coconut smuggling activities after detaining a trailer and two lorries in Kampung Terbak, Tumpat, on Sunday. 'The results of the inspection found that three local men were transferring about 45,100kg of coconuts from the trailer to the lorry. 'The men had failed to show purchase documents related to the coconuts. He added that the estimated value of the seizure is RM1.35mil including vehicles. The case is also being investigated under the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Act 141, he added. 'The suspect and the seized items were handed over to the Kota Baru Fama office for further action,' he said.

He said the inspection found that the activitt was being carried out by three local men and three Bangladeshis, who failed to show valid permits or documents for sand extraction. "The police detained and seized all equipment and machinery such as sand suction vessels, excavators, lorries and other equipment used to move sand estimated at RM2mil. "The case is being investigated under Section 426 of the National Land Code 1965. The suspects and the seized items were handed over to the Kota Baru Land and Mines Office for further action," he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 13). He added that GOF also foiled coconut smuggling activities after detaining a trailer and two lorries in Kampung Terbak, Tumpat on Sunday. "The results of the inspection found that three local men were transferring approximately 45,100kg (45 tonnes) of coconuts from the trailer to the lorries and failed to show purchase documents. "The estimated value of the seizure is RM1.35mil including the vehicles and the case is being investigated under Regulation 4(2) of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) Act 1965 and Coconut Marketing Plan 1973. Smuggling of Merbau saplings foiled by GOF
KOTA BARU: The South-East Brigade of the General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 5,000 Merbau (Melaka teak) saplings during Ops Taring Wawasan near Rantau Panjang. Its commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said that in the 8.30pm incident on Monday, a team from the 7th Battalion, while on routine patrol, stopped a lorry in front of a school. The team discovered tree saplings, believed to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country. He said further inspection revealed that the Merbau saplings were suspected to be infected with pests and diseases. The 42-year-old lorry driver also failed to produce any documentation or authorisation for transporting them. 'The total value of the seizure, including the lorry, is estimated at RM550,000, and the case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976 (Act 167). 'The suspect and all seized items have been handed over to the Kelantan Agriculture Department for further action. 'The GOF will continue to intensify operations to curb the smuggling of foreign plants,' Nik Ros Azhan said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
