It's Official, These Are The Coolest Sneakers To Sport This Summer

If you're looking for a new pair of trainers, good luck to you. Seriously, there's so much choice and so many 'trending' sneakers that it will probably take you until Christmas, or maybe just Halloween, to find the right pair and, by then, it will probably have gone off the boil and you'll be right back to square one. Happily, however, there's a runner that not only has cult status thanks to a film made in 2003, but is from the kind of everywhere-but-somehow-under-the-radar brand that people will know but they might not know . You know? Michelle Li wearing Onitsuka Tiger ©@himichelleli It could only be Onitsuka Tiger. The Japanese sneaker brand shot to fame in the early '00s when a specific trainer in a very specific shade appeared in Kill Bill: Volume 1 (although the label was founded in 1949). The Mexico 66 in bright yellow with black stripes has become as synonymous with 'the Bride', Uma Thurman's character, as her sword - and it's this version that you've probably been seeing everywhere, from underneath pub-garden benches to the Tube. Amaka Hamelijnck wearing Onitsuka Tiger ©@ Michelle Li, the stylist and writer based in New York, paired hers with a white tee, baggy shorts and a translucent and pleasingly turquoise mac last summer, adding chunky socks to give the sleek trainer some bulk. Amaka Hamelijnck, influencer and podcaster, styled her sunflower trainers with a butter yellow co-ord, a baseball cap and a leather jacket, which pretty much seems like the perfect outfit formula right now (the leather might be overkill in this weather - and you know and we never get to say that!). Hailey Bieber wearing Onitsuka Tiger ©@haileybieber Of course, yellow is just the first and most recognisable frontier of the Mexico 66. You've also got silver, which is another one you'll start noticing in the wild once you've clocked it, as well as black, white and a host of other neutrals with subtly contrasting stripes (Hailey Bieber repped the black-and-white version on a recent holiday). So if you like a trainer that feels light on the foot and teams with everything from baggy trousers to knee-length shorts, bubble-hemmed skirts, and minidresses (you heard me), what are you waiting for? 1. I Just Got Back From Paris And These White Trainers Were Inescapable

Most people who live in a major city think theirs is the coolest. Londoners swear by London. Berliners swear by Berlin. New Yorkers stand by the Big Apple, etc, etc. I'm in the first camp, of course – London has its own extra special style. But I do have to say, those Parisians are onto something, too. Often understated and artfully undone, Parisian style tends to be subtle yet considered. It's no wonder that literally everyone wants to dress like a French girl these days, even if they are from the home counties. Which brings me to a recent – and very brief – trip I took to Paris this week, during which I spent some time people watching from various cafes around town (as is my right, when in Paris), while drinking back-to-back espressos. There were obviously a lot of impeccable jeans, a lot of brown leather loafers. But also, one pair of trainers kept popping up in a way that was hard to ignore: the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66s, in white and a long time, the bright yellow Mexico 66s were the trainers to cop. This is partly because they're the trainers Uma Thurman wears in Kill Bill – obviously – and partly because of models like Bella Hadid and Kaia Gerber helping to usher in a new relevance. In Paris, though, it was the white colourway I was seeing most often. Usually the white and black pair, but more than once the all-white version. This particular colourway being so popular in Paris right now makes sense – while the mustard Mexico 66s are bold and statement-y, the white version give off a sense of quiet cool. Paired with some blue denim and a white tee in the summertime? Très beau . We're probably going to be seeing a lot more Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66s out in the wild more generally – not just in Paris. Over the past 18 months or so, the Japanese brand has opened 28 stores across the world, from Shanghai to Barcelona and London. Its first ever flagship store, though? Well, that was in Paris of course – way back in 2002. And Parisians have been stepping out in these cute and classic little sneakers ever since. Footwear Stocks Q1 Highlights: Steven Madden (NASDAQ:SHOO)

As the Q1 earnings season wraps, let's dig into this quarter's best and worst performers in the footwear industry, including Steven Madden (NASDAQ:SHOO) and its peers. Before the advent of the internet, styles changed, but consumers mainly bought shoes by visiting local brick-and-mortar shoe, department, and specialty stores. Today, not only do styles change more frequently as fads travel through social media and the internet but consumers are also shifting the way they buy their goods, favoring omnichannel and e-commerce experiences. Some footwear companies have made concerted efforts to adapt while those who are slower to move may fall behind. The 8 footwear stocks we track reported a strong Q1. As a group, revenues beat analysts' consensus estimates by 1.4% while next quarter's revenue guidance was in line. Thankfully, share prices of the companies have been resilient as they are up 5.5% on average since the latest earnings results. As seen in the infamous Wolf of Wall Street movie, Steven Madden (NASDAQ:SHOO) is a fashion brand famous for its trendy and innovative footwear, appealing to a young and style-conscious audience. Steven Madden reported revenues of $553.5 million, flat year on year. This print fell short of analysts' expectations by 1%, but it was still an exceptional quarter for the company with an impressive beat of analysts' EPS estimates and a solid beat of analysts' adjusted operating income estimates. Edward Rosenfeld, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented, 'We were pleased with our performance in the first quarter, as our team's strong execution of our strategy enabled us to deliver earnings results that significantly exceeded expectations. Looking ahead, we face meaningful near-term headwinds and heightened uncertainty due to the impact of new tariffs on goods imported into the United States. We are moving swiftly to adapt to the changing landscape, with a focus on mitigating near-term impacts while positioning the company for long-term growth. We believe our agile business model – combined with our fortress balance sheet – gives us a competitive advantage in dynamic environments, and we are optimistic that the current disruption will create opportunities for market share gains over time. The general rise in the price of goods and services is trending towards the Fed's 2% goal as of late, which is good news. The higher rates that fought inflation also didn't slow economic activity enough to catalyze a recession. So far, soft landing. This, combined with recent rate cuts (half a percent in September 2024 and a quarter percent in November 2024) have led to strong stock market performance in 2024. The icing on the cake for 2024 returns was Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. Presidential Election in early November, sending major indices to all-time highs in the week following the election. Still, debates around the health of the economy and the impact of potential tariffs and corporate tax cuts remain, leaving much uncertainty around 2025. Covent Garden debut is Onitsuka Tiger's first Red concept store in Europe, Paris comes next

Covent Garden continues to be something of a magnet for sneaker brands and the latest arrival is Onitsuka Tiger's very first European Red concept store. The Japanese brand has just opened in the key London shopping district offering up a mix of fashion with sports and heritage with innovation. It's on popular Neal Street in Covent Garden's Seven Dials area and opened on Tuesday. Interestingly, Onitsuka Tiger has partnered with Crown & Anchor, a local English pub opposite the store to host a special event, Onitsuka Tiger Tavern, on a regular basis. It will be open until May 30 for the launch period with a schedule for upcoming events to be announced on the brand's official social media channels. A brand spokesperson told at the opening event that there will be 'new product and developments' in the final quarter of this year, but earlier than that a Paris store opens next month. The Red concept first launched last year to mark the brand's 75th anniversary and showcases a range of heritage styles with the 'Mexico 66' shoe at its core (a special edition of that is available at the new store exclusively). Designed by the Studio Dini Cataldi architectural firm, the new space is built around a concept that 'merges the brand's Japanese heritage with modern urban aesthetics'. It's a single-storey retail space 'enveloped in the bright Onitsuka Tiger red, inspired by Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom'. Design elements include 'clean lines, modular volumes, and sharp geometries' that reflect Japanese architectural minimalism, 'while polished red and black mirrors elevate the overall interior presence'. The products are shown on monolithic black concrete display walls and freestanding red glass units mean to 'resemble captivating art installations'. There's also matte black furniture and white ceiling light boxes that 'form a strong contrast with the bold red, enhancing visibility of the products'. Externally, the installation of three-sided rotating prisms create an impression on the façade. The company said the 'continuous motion of the prisms creates an ever-changing canvas that embodies the bustling energy of Covent Garden'.
