International Yoga Day 2025: Know the date, theme, history, and significance

International Yoga Day 2025 Date, Theme, History: Yoga is an ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice with roots in India, with the word being derived from the Sanskrit word meaning to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. Every year on June 21, International Yoga Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the multiple benefits of yoga and promote its holistic approach to health and well-being. This year marks the 11th anniversary on June 21, 2025, which falls on a Saturday, under the theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' as designated by the United Nations. The theme highlights the connection between personal well-being and planetary health, aligning with the Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which holds that the world is one family. The idea behind International Yoga Day came in September 2014, when India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, introduced the notion during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. He highlighted the value of yoga as a comprehensive approach to health and well-being and proposed that June 21 be designated as International Yoga Day, which ultimately gained overwhelming support from UN member states, and the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 International Yoga Day in December 2014. Practising yoga 🧘‍♀️brings balance, peace, and good health to our body and mind 💠Let's come together and actively participate in the 'Yog Sangam' event on June 21, International Day of Yoga, and create a new chapter in history#IDY2025 #YogSangam #YogaforOneEarthOneHealth… — PIB India (@PIB_India) June 2, 2025 The significance of International Yoga Day lies in its ability to unite individuals with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and countries to celebrate and practise yoga. International Yoga Day provides an opportunity for individuals and communities globally to come together and experience the transformative effects of yoga.

Oman reviews its 'One Health' implementation efforts

TUNIS: The Sultanate of Oman participated as the guest of honour at the One Health Regional Conference for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, hosted by the Republic of Tunisia. The Sultanate of Oman's delegation was headed by Dr Hilal bin Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health. Dr Al Sabti delivered a speech in which he reviewed the Sultanate of Oman's efforts to implement the One Health approach. He pointed out that the conference constitutes a vital platform for exchanging experiences and best practices, enhancing collective efforts and strengthening regional and international cooperation to address health challenges according to an integrated and comprehensive approach that places human, animal and environmental health at the core of its concerns. He highlighted the Sultanate of Oman's efforts to implement the One Health approach. He explained that the Sultanate of Oman has established several national mechanisms to support the One Health approach, including the formation of national committees and sectoral teams to activate integration between sectors. Those include the National Committee for Integrated Disease Vector Management, the National Committee for Food Safety and Quality, the National Committee for the Hydrological Programme for Safe Water Resources, the National Committee for Climate Change and Ozone Layer Protection, the National Committee for the Sound Management of Chemicals and the Central Team for Improving Environmental Performance in coordination with the Environment Authority to ensure the safety of ecosystems and adaptation to climate change. 'The Sultanate of Oman has played a leading and distinguished role in international forums on the issue of antimicrobial resistance, highlighted by its organisation and hosting of the Third High-Level Global Ministerial Conference for the first time in the MENA region in Muscat in 2022. Besides, the Muscat Conference and the Muscat Final Statement, signed by 47 countries, marked the starting point for preparations for the United Nations High-Level Meeting to discuss the issue of antimicrobial resistance, held in New York on September 26, 2024," he said. 'Within the framework of our commitment to sustainability and the environment (climate change), we launched the Carbon Neutrality Project, which represents a strategic pillar for supporting environmental health by achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This project is a strategic step to support environmental health, improve air quality and reduce health risks resulting from climate change reflecting the Sultanate of Oman's commitment to the principles of One Health and the requirements of sustainable development.', he added. He emphasised that the Sultanate of Oman firmly believes that addressing global and regional health challenges requires concerted efforts and cooperation across all sectors to ensure human health, animal safety and environmental sustainability. Tunis hosts landmark One Health Conference to tackle interconnected health challenges in MENA

Tunis, Tunisia – The Government of Tunisia will host the MENA Region One Health Conference on June 14–15, 2025, in Tunis, in partnership with the World Bank and the Quadripartite collaboration on One Health comprising the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Over the course of this two-day high-level regional conference, government ministers, health sector experts, development partners, and community representatives will be present to discuss and work together on the issue of collaboration across human, animal, and environmental health. The participants will address the most significant challenges such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), climate-related health risks, food insecurity, zoonotic diseases, and the urgent need for integrated surveillance systems. The opening session will feature representatives from the Government of Tunisia and the organizing partners, as well as a high-level ministerial session with participating partner countries. 'This conference is not just an event, but a moment of collective awareness. 'One Health' is no longer a theory; it is a reality we are living and must confront together. The challenges are immense — from pandemics to food security, to antimicrobial resistance — and no individual response can be sufficient. Tunisia is fully committed to this approach and is proud to host this gathering of all those who believe in a united, shared health system, resolutely moving toward the future', said Minister of Health Dr. Moustafa Ferjani. The conference will feature several sessions on the implementation of One Health around the globe with a special focus on the MENA region. Key interventions will include remarks from Ms. Shobha Shetty, Global Director of the World Bank, Ms. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, WOAH Director General, Dr. Abdulhakim Elwaer, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North, and Mr Abdul-Majeid Haddad, Deputy Regional Director of UNEP in West Asia, as well as a recorded message from Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO regional director. 'One Health requires breaking down silos and building a shared vision', said Ahmadou Moustapha Ndiaye, Division Director for the Maghreb and Malta at the World Bank. 'The World Bank reaffirms its commitment to supporting Tunisia and partner countries in the region in developing resilient, integrated, and inclusive cross-sectoral systems'. Dr. Ibrahim EL-ZIQ, WHO Tunisia representative, noted: 'This conference provides an excellent opportunity to accelerate the adoption and operationalization of the 'One Health' approach in the MENA region countries. By meeting here in Tunisia, the various actors are demonstrating their shared determination to act jointly to address complex and interconnected threats to human, animal, and environmental health. Strengthened coordination, constant political commitment and sustainable investment are key to success. We are pleased to join forces with the Tunisian government and the World Bank to co-organize this conference and remain committed to enable countries of the region in transforming this shared vision into concrete action for more resilient and healthier societies'. The conference agenda features thematic sessions on integrated surveillance, laboratory resilience, conservation and climate, and cross-border collaboration. Practitioners will share real-world applications of One Health, while interactive sessions will offer pathways to mainstream One Health at both policy and operational levels. Highlights include: The launch of the Carthage Declaration, setting out a regional roadmap to operationalize One Health. An interactive closing session with the Quadripartite and World Bank representatives outlining next steps and support mechanisms. The formal launch of a MENA One Health Community of Practice, led by Tunisia's Ministry of Health. One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate change, and contributing to sustainable development.
