Webtoon Hit "Teenage Mercenary" to Be Adapted into Anime TV Series

Yara Sameh Webtoon action thriller "Teenage Mercenary" is being developed as an anime series. Webtoon Entertainment's Line Digital Frontier arm, which operates the company's Japan-based Line Manga and ebookjapan services, is working on the adaptation, which is at the development stage. Since launching in 2021, Teenage Mercenary has become one of Webtoon's top action titles with over 1.8 billion global views. It is available in 10 languages and ranked as Line Manga's top title in 2023 and 2024. 'Teenage Mercenary is one of those rare series that hits every note — action, emotion, suspense, and style,' said Sinbae Kim, Chief Growth Officer of Line Digital Frontier. 'It's a global sensation that's dominated across regions, and now it's getting the anime adaptation fans have been asking for. We're excited to bring this incredible story to new fans all over the world.' Created by YC and Rakyeon, "Teenage Mercenary" follows Ijin Yu, a child who survives a deadly plane crash and is forced to become a mercenary to survive. He returns to Korea a decade later and reunites with his family, only to find that life as a teenager presents its battles. Per the synopsis, 'With just one year of high school left, Ijin must trade in his battlefield tactics for hallway diplomacy. Can he survive the emotional minefield of adolescence, or will the school be the one that needs saving?'. 'I still remember when I first started planning Teenage Mercenary, and how nervous I was about how readers would respond when the series launched,' YC said. 'This anime adaptation wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support from our fans. I'm truly grateful and excited to share this moment with them.' 'When we first launched the series, I never imagined it would receive such immense love,' Rakyeon added. 'I'm deeply moved and thankful to meet global fans through this new form of storytelling as an anime.' Webtoon Entertainment has been growing a slate of anime adaptations and currently has 20 in development, including one for Omniscient Reader with Aniplex and Crunchyroll. Recent adaptations include Viral Hit, Tower of God Season 2, True Beauty, and Senpai is an Otokonoko on Crunchyroll. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Jisoo Shines In Omniscient Reader, But Weapon Change Upsets Fans; Director Reacts

Last Updated: Fans of webtoon, Omniscient Reader, are upset because Jisoo's character in the upcoming adaptation uses a gun, while in the novel, she fights with a knife. Omniscient Reader: The Prophet has been creating a buzz since its announcement. The upcoming movie, based on a fan-favourite webtoon, tells the story of Kim Dok Ja, played by Ahn Hyo-seop, who suddenly finds himself inside the fantasy world of the book he was reading. While it stars Ahn Hyo Seop, Lee Min-ho, Chae Soo-bin, Shin Seung-ho and Nana, fans are especially curious about Blackpink's Jisoo, who appears in a short but interesting role. Despite the excitement, fans of the original story are upset because Jisoo's character, Lee Ji Hye, uses a gun in the movie, while in the novel, she fights with a knife. The makers have not said much about this change, but recently, the director Kim Byung-woo shared why they decided to make this switch during the film's press conference. As per Chosun Biz, the filmmaker explained, 'I made this decision (of Lee Ji Hye using a gun) after long thought about what can explode the character at the most dramatic moment. I fully understand that fans who loved the original work are worried about this point through the trailer or photos. I believe it will be fully understandable when they see the film rather than through long explanations." Revealing the reason behind casting Jisoo, Kim Byung-woo mentioned, 'The casting criteria were clear. The first was to find someone who could work hard. When I first met Jisoo, the enthusiasm was strong, and she was very dedicated during the pre-reading sessions. Although her role is not large, I thought it would be great to have an actor who could draw more attention. (Jisoo) worked really hard on fitting the character, and I am very satisfied with her performance now." Omniscient Reader: The Prophet is the first movie in a new film series inspired by the well-known webtoon Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. Blackpink's Jisoo will be seen in a special cameo role, which also marks another guest appearance for her after she appeared in Dr Cheon and Lost Talisman in 2023. Most recently, the South Korean singer played a lead role in the zombie drama Newtopia. Omniscient Reader: The Prophet is set to release on July 23. First Published: June 18, 2025, 13:50 IST

'Omniscient Reader': Lee Min Ho returns to the big screen — To hit theaters on July 23, 2025

Lee Min Ho is making a much-anticipated return to the big screen after nearly a decade with Omniscient Reader , one of the most buzzed-about Korean films of 2025. But he's not coming alone—joining him is Ahn Hyo Seop , star of A Business Proposal, who makes his film debut in this visually stunning action-fantasy adaptation. While the movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast, fans are especially excited to see two K-drama powerhouses—Lee Min Ho and Ahn Hyo Seop—share the screen for the first time. According to Allkpop , Omniscient Reader is officially set to release in South Korean cinemas on July 23, 2025. Although a release date for India has not yet been confirmed, Lee Min Ho's massive fan base in the country makes a theatrical release there highly likely. A Star-Studded Lineup and a Beloved Webtoon The film also features an ensemble of popular stars including Chae Soo Bin (When the Phone Rings), Shin Seung Ho (Alchemy of Souls), Nana (Mask Girl), Jisoo (Snowdrop, BLACKPINK), and Kwon Eun Seong (Pachinko), alongside Ahn Hyo Seop. Omniscient Reader is based on the widely popular webtoon of the same name by Sing Shong. The story follows Kim Dokja (played by Ahn Hyo Seop), a seemingly ordinary office worker whose life takes an extraordinary turn when the plot of his favorite web novel, Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World, begins to unfold in reality. To his shock, Dokja finds himself face to face with Yoo Joonghyuk (Lee Min Ho), the fictional protagonist of the story. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo A Clash of Worlds and a Race Against Time Joonghyuk possesses a unique ability—he returns to the beginning of the apocalypse every time he dies, giving him a seemingly infinite number of chances to survive. Dokja, on the other hand, holds a different power: he's the only reader who knows how the web novel ends. The two must reluctantly team up to navigate deadly scenarios and rewrite the fate of both their worlds. Along the way, they are joined by a cast of compelling characters. Chae Soo Bin plays Yoo Sangah, Dokja's adaptable and loyal colleague, while Jisoo appears as Lee Jihye, Joonghyuk's trusted companion known for her unmatched strength and combat skills. First Teaser Raises the Stakes To build anticipation, the release date was announced alongside a striking teaser trailer. The clip shows Dokja's ordinary world being consumed by Joonghyuk's apocalyptic universe, setting the stage for a thrilling convergence of fantasy and reality. Each character is introduced with their signature weapons and gear, promising high-octane action and intense survival sequences. In one of the trailer's standout moments, Dokja declares, 'We just have to clear up to the 99th scenario. With my companions, I will rewrite the ending of this story.'

World Webtoon Festival to return with global push

Korea's premier web comic event expands to major shopping complex as industry eyes international growth South Korea's flagship web comic showcase is returning for a second year — this time, on a larger scale. As with last year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will host the event, with the Korea Creative Content Agency overseeing operations. The 2025 World Webtoon Festival will take place Oct. 19–22 at the sprawling Lotte World Mall complex in Songpa-gu, Seoul, a 244,000-square-meter mixed-use development. The new venue marks a shift from last year's boutique setup in Seongsu-dong to one of Asia's largest shopping destinations, allowing for greater international participation and expanded commercial programming. Pop-up stores will occupy 11 spaces ranging from 10 to 100 square meters throughout the mall. These retail spaces will operate beyond the four-day festival window, staying open Oct. 16-26 to capitalize on visitor traffic and commercial momentum. The complex's ice rink will house content exhibitions, while its multiplex cinema will host conferences and presentations featuring industry professionals and creators in a 300-seat theater. This year's festival doubles down on cross-platform storytelling — showcasing how webtoons branch into games, animation and other multimedia formats. Separately, a job fair will connect aspiring creators with production houses to help expand career pathways in the rapidly growing sector. The culture ministry plans broader international participation following criticism that last year's event fell short of its global branding. This year's programming will feature creators and professionals from around the world to bring diverse industry perspectives. The second World Webtoon Awards ceremony will cap the festival's final day by recognizing outstanding domestic and international works across multiple categories. Last year's inaugural festival drew packed crowds to venues across Seongsu-dong. Popular series like "Solo Leveling" and "Omniscient Reader" drove merchandise pavilions, while tech giants Naver and Kakao demonstrated platform innovations, including AI-powered features and interactive viewing technologies. Korea's web comic industry recorded 2.19 trillion won ($1.5 billion) in sales in 2023, marking nearly 20 percent growth year-over-year, according to government data released earlier this year.
