IOC presidential handover ceremony on June 23

The outgoing president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, will officially pass the presidency to Kirsty Coventry during a special handover ceremony on June 23 at the Olympic House in Lausanne. Bach, who became the ninth IOC president following his election at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires in 2013, will conclude 12 years of service at the helm of the Olympic Movement. He served a first eight-year term and was re-elected unopposed for a second four-year term in March 2021. During the 144th IOC Session in Greece in March 2025, he was elected IOC honorary president for life. Coventry, elected in March 2025, will become the 10th president of the IOC. The handover ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. CEST (2:30-3:45pm IST). It will be livestreamed on the IOC Media YouTube channel.

LAUSANNE: President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Board Member in the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF) HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani reaffirmed QOC's deep commitment to supporting refugee athletes and promoting sport as a tool for peace and social cohesion. This came during his participation in the ORF's Annual Board Meeting at the Olympic House in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Monday, where he emphasized the importance of Olympic partnerships in broadening the humanitarian impact of sport across the globe. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Olympism365 – Sport for a Better World Summit, hosted by the International Olympic Committee to strengthen the role of sport in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Sheikh Joaan further noted that the State of Qatar's experience in leveraging sport to support humanitarian causes offers a practical model that can be expanded and enhanced. His Excellency reiterated QOC's readiness to continue working with international partners to scale joint initiatives and create safe spaces where refugee children and youth can access sport and integrate meaningfully into their new communities. President of the International Olympic Committee and Chair of the ORF Dr Thomas Bach chaired the meeting, in the attendance of prominent figures in the Olympic Movement, including HE United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, alongside fellow ORF Board Members and international sporting organizations' representatives. The meeting went over the ORF's 2024 Annual and Financial Reports, discussed the 2025 operational plan, and endorsed the Foundation's 2025–2030 strategic framework. The board also explored opportunities to expand sport-based programs for refugees and youth in host communities and adopted important decisions regarding the future of the Foundation's global initiatives. Sheikh Joaan'sparticipation reflects the State of Qatar's commitment to support the ORF's efforts across strategic, financial, and operational dimensions, including hosting the Refugee Olympic Team ahead of the Tokyo 2020 also has delivered targeted sports and humanitarian programs for displaced Palestinian and Afghan youth and hosted the ORF Board Meeting in Doha in April 2024. The State of Qatar's initiatives and its continued support for the ORF have contributed to the implementation of 14 sports programs across 10 countries, providing thousands of young refugees with the opportunity to engage in sport within safe environments. These efforts have contributed to the development of essential life skills and have positioned sport as an effective tool for empowerment and social cohesion in host communities.

The meeting reviewed the strong sporting ties between the two countries and explored ways to further develop and strengthen cooperation in the coming period. Discussions also touched on topics of mutual interest, including preparations for the upcoming World Athletics Championships-Tokyo 2025 and the 20th Asian Games- Nagoya 2026. It also discussed the promising opportunities for exchanging expertise between the two nations in the fields of sports administration and the organization of major events, building on the extensive experience both sides possess in this domain. Sheikh Joaan reaffirmed the QOC's commitment to expanding international cooperation and knowledge exchange with friendly countries. He noted that the Qatari-Japanese partnership serves as a promising model for synergy in advancing the aspirations of the Olympic Movement and promoting sustainability and innovation in the sports sector at both regional and international levels. The meeting was attended by Secretary General of the QOC Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain.

Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), on Wednesday met with Abdullah bin Muhammad Bamkhallaf, Secretary-General of the Oman Olympic Committee and President of the Oman Table Tennis Association, who is currently visiting Doha. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation between the Qatari and Omani Olympic Committees and explored ways to enhance it in the coming period, in a manner that supports the progress of joint GCC sports initiatives and promotes the exchange of expertise in sports administration and development programs. The two parties emphasized the importance of continued cooperation among GCC Olympic Committees to further support athletes and strengthen the institutional foundations of sport in the region, in alignment with the aspirations of the Olympic Movement. The Omani official praised Qatar's outstanding organizational success in hosting the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships – Doha 2025, stating that this achievement reflects Qatar's leading position on the global sports map and its ability to deliver a comprehensive model for hosting major international events.
