Gulf of Oman: Ships on fire near Strait of Hormuz amid rising Iran-Israel tensions? What we know so far

Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, social media buzzed with claims that three ships were on fire in the Gulf of Oman, near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. These claims were supported by circulating photos, though officials have not yet confirmed any such incident. Meanwhile, NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) map showed three red hotspots in the Gulf of Oman, potentially indicating heat signatures consistent with fires. However, without official confirmation or additional data, the situation remains unverified. NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) map. 'Photos are currently circulating which appear to show three ships on fire off the coast of Iran in the Gulf of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz. NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) Map appearing (sic) to confirm three fires in the Gulf of Oman,' wrote OSINTdefender in a post on X. 'There are reports of an indictment involving three ships in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz. I've found three ships transmitting not under command in the region,' wrote another user, Camskon2, on X. Mint has not been able to verify the authenticity of the images. British maritime security firm Ambrey reported early Tuesday that an incident occurring 22 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan, United Arab Emirates — close to the Strait of Hormuz — was not security-related, Reuters reported. Oman holds immense strategic importance in global geopolitics due to its location along two of the world's most critical maritime passages—the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Oman and Iran, is the world's most vital oil transit chokepoint, with about 20 per cent of global oil passing through it daily. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and further to the Arabian Sea. According to the US Energy Information Administration, in 2024, oil flow through the strait averaged 20 million barrels per day, or the equivalent of about 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption. In the first quarter of 2025, total oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz remained relatively flat compared with 2024. According to the report, between 2022 and 2024, volumes of crude oil and condensate transiting the Strait of Hormuz declined by 1.6 million barrels per day, which was only partially offset by a 0.5-million barrels per day increase in petroleum product cargoes. Photos are currently circulating which appear to show three ships on fire off the coast of Iran in the Gulf of Oman. Meanwhile, tensions are rising between Israel and Iran, marking the fifth consecutive day of hostilities. The escalation began with Israel's widescale strikes on Friday, which were reportedly aimed at disrupting Iran's nuclear ambitions and preventing Tehran from developing an atomic weapon. The continued exchange of attacks has heightened regional instability and raised global concerns over a broader conflict. (With inputs from agencies)

Video Shows Russian Drone Hitting Housing Complex In Kyiv, 14 Killed In Attack

Kyiv: Russia has launched a major missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding several others, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack, the latest in a spate of Russian strikes on Ukraine, occurred as world leaders gathered in Canada for the Group of Seven (G7) meeting, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend. Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said that 27 locations in different districts of the capital came under enemy fire. "Residential buildings, educational institutions and critical infrastructure facilities" had all been hit, he said, adding that 30 apartments were destroyed in a single residential block. "The deaths have risen to 14 people. As of now, 44 people have been injured in Kyiv," Klymenko added. The Minister also informed that six others had been injured in Odesa and another in Chernigiv. Footage from this morning emerged on social media showing a direct strike by a drone on a high-rise apartment building in the Ukrainian capital. "During the attack on Kyiv... a 62-year-old US citizen died in a house opposite to the place where medics were providing assistance to the injured," Klitschko said on Telegram. Most of the casualties were reportedly in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts. City's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said fires also broke out in two other Kyiv districts as a result of falling debris from drones shot down by Ukrainian air defences. Both Russia and Ukraine have launched mass drone attacks in recent weeks amid the ongoing direct talks on ending the more than three-year-old war. The talks have produced agreements on freeing prisoners of war and returning the bodies of fallen soldiers, but little more. This came as Zelenskyy was set to meet with US President Donald Trump in Canada on Tuesday, though the White House announced that Trump would be returning unexpectedly to Washington on Monday night instead of Tuesday night because of tensions in the Middle East. In Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence units had repelled an attack on the city by two Ukrainian drones. The city's airports were briefly closed.

Iran Earthquake Today: 5 Dead, 87 Injured After Israeli Strike Near Nuclear Site Triggers Explosion and Tremor

Missile and drone barrages have marked a fierce escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict. Following an Israeli strike near a nuclear site that caused an explosion and tremor, hitting all three major Iranian nuclear facilities, Iran retaliated. A devastating chain reaction of explosions and seismic activity near Iran's Fordow nuclear facility has left five people dead and 87 injured, marking a dramatic escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict that has now seen strikes on all three of Iran's primary nuclear sites. The incident, which occurred today, involved a 2.5-magnitude earthquake near Qom, close to the Fordow Nuclear Power Plant, coinciding with what witnesses described as powerful explosions. A separate 4.3-magnitude tremor struck southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province near the Pakistan border, adding to the chaos. Tremor Strikes Amidst Conflict The Fordow facility reportedly felt the quake and nearby blasts at roughly the same time. This incident now means Israel has made history, becoming the first to hit all three of Iran's main nuclear sites – Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow – as per a Voice of the Nation Organiser report. Last week, the initial wave of assaults impacted the Natanz enrichment site and the Uranium Conversion Facility in Isfahan. Fordow came under attack afterwards, with the UN atomic watchdog validating the strike on Friday. New satellite pictures have shown considerable damage at Natanz, even to its power station, which reflects the assault's magnitude. As military operations clash with unexplained seismic activity, the conflict keeps escalating, stirring echoes of patterns observed in Pakistan during India's military operations of Operation Sindoor, reportedly striking nuclear facilities near Kirana Hills in Pakistan's Punjab province. Nuclear Facilities Under Fire Sunday saw the Israel-Iran conflict escalate again as both nations unleashed missile and drone assaults. Having struck Iran's nuclear and military facilities, Israel broadened its attacks to civilian structures, among them Tehran's police headquarters. Israeli strikes' amount to a deep and comprehensive blow to the Iranian threat.' Israel's military announced it had hit more than 80 locations across the Iranian capital overnight, among them the Iranian Ministry of Defense headquarters and the SPND nuclear program office. Iran Retaliates Against Israel Early Monday, Iran unleashed another round of missile strikes on Israel, claiming at least five lives. At the same time, Israel asserted its aerial dominance over Tehran, stating it could traverse the Iranian capital unthreatened. Iran declared it had fired roughly 100 missiles. It promised more reprisal for widespread assaults on its military and nuclear infrastructure, which have killed at least 224 people there since Friday, per the Associated Press. Israel reported 24 deaths and over 500 injuries, stating this came as Iran unleashed more than 370 missiles and hundreds of drones. Blasts Shake Tel Aviv And Petah Tikva Forceful explosions, presumably Israel's defence systems intercepting Iranian missiles, shook Tel Aviv just before dawn on Monday, sending dark smoke plumes high above the coastal city. Petah Tikva authorities reported that Iranian missiles struck a residential building, charring concrete, shattering windows, and tearing off apartment walls. — Iran Military (@IranMilitary__) June 16, 2025 Israel's Magen David Adom reported five killed in attacks on four central sites: two women and two men in their 70s, plus one other. 'We clearly see that our civilians are being targeted,' said Israeli police spokesman Dean Elsdunne outside the bombed-out building in Petah Tikva. 'And this is just one scene. We have other sites like this near the coast, in the south.' Petah Tikva resident Yoram Suki fled to a shelter with family during an air raid, emerging to find his apartment destroyed. Despite this loss, he urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to maintain attacks on Iran. The Human Toll and Ground Impact Beyond the fatalities, MDA paramedics evacuated 87 wounded to hospitals as rescuers continued searching for residents trapped in rubble. 'When we arrived at the scene of the rocket strike, we saw massive destruction,' Dr Gal Rosen, an MDA paramedic who rescued a 4-day-old baby from the blazing building. The targeting of nuclear facilities raises serious international concerns about potential radioactive contamination and regional stability. The simultaneous occurrence of military strikes and seismic activity near sensitive nuclear sites has prompted calls for immediate de-escalation from global leaders. As rescue operations continue and both nations prepare for potential further exchanges, the Middle East faces its most dangerous moment in recent memory, with the spectre of nuclear facility damage adding an unprecedented dimension to the conflict. "Broken Windows, Shattered Glass": Video Shows US Embassy In Israel Damaged In Iranian Strike

Tel Aviv: The Embassy of the United States in Tel Aviv was temporarily closed after the building sustained minor damage following an Iranian missile strike overnight, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee confirmed on Monday. Though no injuries or casualties were reported among US diplomatic staff, videos surfaced on the internet showing the consulate building impacted by the concussive force of nearby explosions. Our US Embassy in Israel and Consulate will officially remain closed today as shelter in place still in effect. Some minor damage from concussions of Iranian missile hits near Embassy Branch in Tel Aviv but no injuries to US personnel," Huckabee wrote in a post on X. The embassy was closed for the day after the destruction, and staff were ordered to shelter in safe places, adhering to emergency protocols. Iran unleashed a barrage of missile strikes on Israeli cities early on Monday, after Israel struck military targets deep inside Iran, with both sides threatening further devastation. Israel's Magen David Adom emergency service said five people were killed and 92 wounded on Monday, raising the previous toll of four deaths. After decades of enmity and a prolonged shadow war fought through proxies and covert operations, Israel's surprise assault on Iran last week has touched off the most intense fighting yet and triggered fears of a lengthy conflict that could engulf the Middle East. Israel says its attacks have hit military and nuclear facilities, and killed many top commanders and atomic scientists -- but a senior US official said Sunday that US President Donald Trump told Israel to back down from a plan to kill supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump has urged the foes to "make a deal", but told reporters Sunday that "sometimes they have to fight it out" first.

US Embassy Building In Israel's Tel Aviv Damaged After Iran Missile Strike

Last Updated: US Embassy In Israel: US Ambassador to Israel said that the Embassy building in Tel Aviv suffered damage in the Iranian missile strikes. Isreali US Embassy: A United States Embassy branch in Tel Aviv was hit in the Iranian missile strikes as military conflict with Israel entered its fourth day on Monday, a top official said. Mike Huckabee, the US Ambassador to Israel, said on social media that minor damage was reported near the branch office in the city after 'concussions of an Iranian missile hit nearby". No US personnel were injured in the incident; however, the US Embassy in the country and its consulate remain closed today due to the ongoing shelter-in-place order. Some minor damage from concussions of Iranian missile hits near Embassy Branch in @TelAviv but no injuries to US personnel.— Ambassador Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) June 16, 2025 This comes as Israel and Iran continued to fire missiles and drones at each other on Sunday night and early Monday morning. The video emerging from the building showed broken glass and window panes. — OSINTdefender (@sentdefender) June 16, 2025 A day earlier, US President Donald Trump had warned Iran against striking any US assets, threatening 'full might of the armed forces" if they do so. 'The U.S. had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight. If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before. However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict," Trump had said on Truth Social on Saturday (local time), as Israel struck Iran's energy and nuclear sites in a major escalation of the conflict. The ongoing military action by both warring nations has raised fears of missile attacks spiraling into a wider regional conflict. An Iranian top official claimed on camera that Pakistan has told them that they would nuke Israel if it attacks Iran with a nuclear bomb. 'Pakistan has told us that if Israel uses nuclear missiles, we will also attack it with nuclear weapons," Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) general and Iranian National Security Council member Mohsen Rezaei said in an interview. Iran's health ministry has said that Israeli strikes since last Friday — when the first attack took place on nuclear sites — have killed 224 people. Israel launched 'Operation Rising Lion' on June 13 to target Iran's nuclear facilities. In response, Iran launched a counter-operation codenamed 'Operation True Freedom 3'. Ballistic missiles were fired at each other, which have claimed several lives on both sides of the border. First Published: June 16, 2025, 11:10 IST
