World champ Proteas return to heroes' welcome

‘A call to action': Black Coffee Foundation raises R500 000 for Eastern Cape flood victims
The Black Coffee Foundation, through donations from members of the public and other organisations, has raised more than R500 000 to assist displaced flood victims in the Eastern Cape. Additionally, the foundation has provided food parcels, warm clothing, hygiene packs, and other essentials in collaboration with other prominent organisations. Recognising the scale of the tragedy, the Eastern Cape provincial government has scheduled a provincial day of mourning on Thursday. As the residents of the OR Tambo and Amathole district municipalities began rebuilding their lives following the devastating floods that struck the Eastern Cape over the weekend, renowned DJ Black Coffee's foundation stepped forward in a big way. The foundation raised over R500 000 to help displaced families and communities rebuild. 'This is more than just a relief effort – it's a call to action for all of us to step up and support our communities in times of crisis,' said foundation CEO Lungile Maphumulo. 'The Eastern Cape holds a deep significance not only for the foundation but for the many people who call it home.' The Eastern Cape, particularly Mthatha, holds personal significance for Black Coffee, the Grammy-winning DJ, as he spent part of his formative years there. 'We are grateful to our partners and to every single person who donated towards this cause. Giving back isn't just something we do – it's who we are,' Maphumulo said. In addition to the financial aid, the foundation also worked with partners like Feed the Nation, Hollywood Foundation, Nando's, Sompire, BidAir Cargo, and NGL Logistics Group to deliver food parcels, hygiene packs, warm clothing, and other essential items to those in need. The damage caused by the floods was staggering - Premier Oscar Mabuyane said in a statement that there were 92 confirmed fatalities – with 86 bodies positively identified and 83 collected by family members. Supplied Around 4 308 individuals have been left homeless across the province and are currently being accommodated in shelters. Recovery efforts in the region are progressing, albeit slowly. While water provision has resumed in Amathole, a full restoration is still underway. Similarly, various areas in the OR Tambo district now have running water, with efforts ongoing to restore full access by the end of Sunday. 'We believe that real impact comes through sustained action,' Maphumulo said. 'This initiative is not a once-off campaign – it's part of our wider mission to continue showing up where it matters most. We understand the long road ahead for many families in Mthatha, and we intend to walk that road with them.' Recognising the scale of the tragedy, a day of mourning is being held on in Mthatha on Thursday for those who died in the flooding.

Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Committee Chairperson Calls for Assistance for Flood Victims in Eastern Cape and KZN
The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has noted with sadness the severe flooding that has left 49 people dead so far and others without homes as flood waters washed away houses and destroyed road infrastructure in the Eastern Cape. According to media reports, the disruptive rains, strong winds and snowfall that have hit the province hard started on Monday. Schooling has been suspended in the affected areas and some 58 schools have been damaged in the OR Tambo coastal area, Amathole East and Alfred Nzo West, the most affected areas in the province. The bodies of four children, a driver and a conductor who were on a bus that was carried away in flood waters as it was crossing a bridge near Mthatha on Tuesday morning are among those that have been recovered. Dr Mkhize said the committee calls for assistance from all those who are able to assist the families affected by floods in the Eastern Cape, particularly in the worst affected districts. Dr Mkhize said disasters of this nature are not new, they come and go, even this one is certainly going to pass. 'We note its catastrophic consequences with broken hearts, however,' emphasised Dr Mkhize. He said the committee extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and relatives of those who passed away as a result of the floods. 'We are with you in this very difficult and heavy time of loss of the loved ones. May their souls rest in eternal peace.' As floods continue, according to media reports, the number of victims may rise. KwaZulu-Natal also experienced flooding and at least 68 schools across nine districts in KZN have been damaged, although no fatalities have been recorded according to media reports. The committee has noted reports of injuries arising from damage to houses and other infrastructure in parts of KZN in the past few days as a result of adverse weather conditions. South Africa flooding toll rises to nine, children missing
The death toll from flooding in eastern parts of South Africa has risen to nine as rescuers search for children missing after a minibus was swept away, the local government said on Wednesday. Heavy snowfall and storms have affected areas of the Eastern Cape province, with the entire country experiencing extreme winter weather conditions since last week. Torrential rains in the OR Tambo district have now claimed nine lives, a statement from the local government said, raising an earlier toll of seven. The search for missing children aboard a school bus that was swept away by a flood was ongoing early on Wednesday, it added. Khuselwa Rantjie, spokeswoman for the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, told AFP she could not confirm how many children or adults were on the bus. Local media have reported that at least 10 children are missing. Separately, three children were rescued after spending hours in trees to escape rising waters near the city of Mthatha, one of the areas hardest hit. Several hundred people have been displaced since Monday, according to the government, mainly from OR Tambo and Amathole districts, with some relocated in schools and town halls. The local authority said it was providing hot meals and essentials to those housed in temporary shelters with support from several government agencies. The 'relentless downpours' also caused landslides and 'significant damage to property and infrastructure,' the government added. South Africa's national weather service has warned that severe and extreme winter weather conditions would persist until at least the middle of this week.

Bank executive and two others rescued from suspected kidnapping syndicate in Gauteng
Police believe they've 'dismantled' a suspected kidnapping syndicate after officers rescued a bank executive and one other person who were tied up at a house in Tembisa, Gauteng, on Thursday. They tracked down a third person after the kidnappers released him. It is alleged that the syndicate hijacked people, kidnapped them and withdrew large sums of money from their bank accounts. According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the police's Anti-Kidnapping Task Team arrested four of the suspected syndicate members. Mathe said: 'The first suspect was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport while boarding a flight to Durban.' The others were arrested in Tembisa 'and found in possession of two stolen vehicles' allegedly used to hijack and kidnap the victims, she added. 'The bank executive's Mercedes-Benz was recovered in Ivory Park,' she said.
