Union Minister Jitendra Singh convenes meeting of all science & technology institutes and reviews progress of institutes in Northeast

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, and MoS in the Prime Minister Office, Deptt. of Space and Atomic Energy chaired a high-level review meeting of all science and technology institutes operating in the Northeast, along with key departments of the Nagaland government, in Wokha district on Tuesday, said a statement from Ministry of Science & Technology. During the meeting, Dr Singh emphasised the recent breakthroughs achieved in the region due to an enabling ecosystem fostered by the Government's strong inclination towards science, technology and innovation. He reiterated the importance of not limiting scientific advancement to central areas but expanding it actively into peripheral and remote regions -- particularly the Northeastern states, which hold immense untapped potential. Dr. Singh highlighted the rich biodiversity of the region and identified agriculture and allied sectors, along with tourism and film production, as key focus areas for sustainable growth. Praising Wokha District, he noted its success under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme with Banana cultivation, which has brought national recognition to the area. 'This model can be scaled to a larger commercial level, boosting the local economy while showcasing the region's unique strengths,' he said. He further shared that a 15-day nationwide saturation campaign for flagship government schemes is being launched, aimed at achieving maximum reach and inclusion. Reflecting on the transformative changes of the last decade, he pointed out that youth from Nagaland and Manipur are now actively recruited into aviation and hospitality industries, which was unthinkable earlier. 'In fact, the recent tragic air crash in Ahmedabad included two young girls from Manipur -- a solemn reminder of how far the region has come,' he said with emotion. Dr. Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's consistent prioritisation of the Northeast, sharing that the PM has visited the region at least 70 times since 2014. 'His goal was to break both mental and physical barriers that distanced the region from the mainstream,' Singh remarked. He urged youth and women to take leadership roles. 'In the Northeast, women have always led -- from managing fish markets to running households. Now is the time to form self-help groups, generate livelihood, and build confidence,' he said. He recalled that women scientists led missions like Chandrayaan, Aditya-L1, and others -- adding that in the Northeast, the culture of women leadership is already embedded. Concluding the meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that India's economic rise to the top three economies globally will be fuelled by unexplored and underexplored regions like the Northeast, aligning with the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. The meeting was attended by Nagaland MLA Dr Chumben Murry, Advisor to the Chief Minister, and senior officials from premier scientific institutions under the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Survey of India, among others. Kuppadam silk sarees win national award under ODOP initiative

GUNTUR: The famed Kuppadam silk sarees of Chirala in Bapatla district have received a prestigious national award under the Centre's 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative, putting the spotlight back on a centuries-old handloom tradition. The award will be presented during a national ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, on July 14. Bapatla District Collector J Venkata Murali will receive the award on behalf of the district. This recognition comes as a major boost to hundreds of weaving families in Chirala and surrounding villages, who have kept the Kuppadam saree tradition alive despite dwindling demand in the face of mechanised textile production. The intricate weaving technique and traditional motifs had once earned wide acclaim but saw a steady decline, threatening the livelihood of many artisans. 'There was a time when we feared our children would never touch the loom again,' said Lakshman Rao, a senior weaver from Chirala. 'Now, with this award, it feels like our struggle has been acknowledged. Our looms have found a voice again.' Many weavers, despite financial hardships, continued to weave in small workshops and homes. Some took up other jobs to survive but returned to the loom whenever possible—preserving techniques passed down through generations.

Work on the project is underway, and officials indicated that the date for laying the foundation stone would be announced soon. The museum will showcase locks from various historical periods and regions, including both antiques and examples of modern advances, thereby illustrating Aligarh's renowned craftsmanship and prominence in security innovations. A unique element of the project is the inclusion of a "Wish Wall", where visitors can attach locks symbolic of their aspirations, prayers or personal messages. In addition, the museum will host workshops designed to impart the art of lock-making, with the aim to revive traditional skills and attract a wide audience, including tourists, students, and entrepreneurs. According to municipal commissioner Prem Prakash Meena, Aligarh's lock industry traces its roots to 1870 and is now a part of the state's One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. "The museum is a long-pending dream of our artisans and traders who wanted a space to showcase their craft to national and international visitors." Meena said the museum is also expected to give a boost to local employment, tourism and earn global recognition for Aligarh. The museum is proposed to be constructed on a plot of land in front of the Jawahar Bhawan in Aligarh. There will be a conference hall as well. Also, there will be facilities for children's sports, entertainment and food courts. Chirala's Kuppadam silk sarees selected for national award

Bapatla: The traditional Kuppadam silk sarees from Chirala region have been honoured with a prestigious national award by the Central government. The award has been announced under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, recognising the unique craftsmanship and cultural significance of these hand-woven sarees. The Chirala region, which is a major centre for textile production, holds historical significance as the weavers of Chirala played a crucial role during India's independence movement, responding to Mahatma Gandhi's call to boycott foreign textiles. Kuppadam sarees, traditionally woven on handlooms by skilled weavers from Chirala region, already enjoy considerable demand in the market. This national recognition is expected to enhance their popularity further and provide much-needed support to the weaving community. The award will help these distinctive sarees gain a stronger foothold in the national market and bring special recognition to Chirala at national level. Hundreds of weaving families in Chirala area of Bapatla district have been sustaining their livelihoods through this traditional craft for many years. These hand-woven Kuppadam sarees, created with great effort by artisans on traditional looms, once enjoyed a huge demand. However, with the advent of mechanised production, the output of traditional Kuppadam sarees had been declining, causing concern among the weaving community. Earlier this year, on January 9, a Central government team comprising Ish Deep and Dr Divya Dingra conducted a field inspection in Chirala, Bapatla. They examined the Kuppadam saree exhibition organised at the Collectorate, along with the district Collector. During this visit, the Collector presented a comprehensive report to the central team covering the production, sales, and living conditions of the weaving community in Chirala. Following a thorough examination, the Central government decided to grant national-level recognition to Chirala's Kuppadam sarees under the One District One Product scheme. According to official government orders, Bapatla district Collector J Venkata Murali will receive the national award on behalf of the region at a programme scheduled on July 14 at Bharat Mandapam of Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
