Liverpool plot 'dream £150m Alexander Isak swoop' after landing £116m Florian Wirtz
Liverpool could break the British transfer record for the second time this summer as they weigh up a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The record is currently held by Chelsea's Moises Caicedo, who moved to West London from Brighton in a £115million deal in 2023, but Liverpool are set to usurp that upon the arrival of Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz. Advertisement Transfer news LIVE! All the latest rumours and done deals as they happen The move is yet to be confirmed, with a medical due to take place this week, but is reported to be worth as much as £116m should performance-based add-ons be activated. And they could be set to smash that record in the very same transfer window as they look to replace the misfiring Darwin Nunez, put up for sale with a £59m price tag after scoring just five goals in 30 Premier League appearances last season. Liverpool have reportedly named Newcastle's Isak as their 'dream target', but have been quoted a £150m fee if they are to pry him away from St James' Park. Advertisement That fee would comfortably mark him as the most expensive player in British history, but whether Liverpool could afford it after moves for Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong is another question entirely. Isak scored the winner as Newcastle pipped Liverpool to the League Cup title in May, clinching the Magpies' first piece of silverware for over 70 years. The Northeastern club are not in any rush to let him leave, either, and are reportedly in talks regarding a contract extension. The Sweden international has been the envy of the League since he signed from Real Sociedad in 2022, scoring 54 Premier League goals in 86 appearances since. Arsenal, who are in desperate need of an out-and-out striker, are also known to hold an interest in a deal, but are caught up in tense negotiations for both Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko. Should Liverpool fail in a move for Isak, not unlikely given the steep asking price, they will join the race for Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old Frenchman is the budget alternative to Isak, relatively speaking, with the Bundesliga outfit quoting around £85m. The Reds join both Chelsea and Manchester United in chasing a deal. United are said to be preparing a player-plus-cash offer, which could include Joshua Zirkzee. The Netherlands international joined United from Bologna for £36.5m last summer but struggled to impress, finding the back of the net just seven times in 49 appearances.
