England 0-0 Slovenia: Young Lions held to frustrating stalemate at U21 Euros

England Under-21s missed the chance to secure their place in the knockout stage of the European Championship after being held to a goalless draw by Slovenia. Lee Carsley's side were frustrated in the first half against a Slovenia side who threatened at times themselves, but Ethan Nwaneri and Harvey Elliott spurned golden opportunities. Advertisement Goalkeeper James Beadle played his part in keeping England level with decent saves to deny Svit Seslar. England moved to the top of the group, for the time being at least, but will have to wait to secure their qualification against Germany when they meet in Nitra on Wednesday, while Slovenia kept their slim hopes of progressing alive. Slovenia started brightly and came close when Seslar's whipped free-kick deflected inches wide of the target and Beadle was then called into action for the first time to stop Seslar's drilled effort with his legs. England's first chance came in the 20th minute. Captain James McAtee will have been disappointed to drag his close-range effort harmlessly wide. Advertisement England should have been ahead just before the half-hour when Jonathan Rowe showed great feet to get past his marker and put the ball on a plate for Nwaneri, but with the goal at his mercy he somehow missed an easy tap-in. Slovenia started to threaten again, with Seslar proving a menace as he let rip with a ferocious effort from outside the box which Beadle did well to tip over the crossbar. England again came close to an opener before the break. Elliot Anderson superbly picked out the run of Elliott and he lifted his effort over goalkeeper Martin Turk only to see the ball bounce off the upright and away from danger. Another glorious chance went begging when Tino Livramento hooked the ball into the six-yard area and McAtee directed a shot on goal but Turk was in the right place to save. Advertisement Slovenia almost made England pay for those missed chances as another chance fell to Seslar, but he saw a curling strike saved by Beadle. Substitute Omari Hutchinson injected some pace into England's attack and his cross found Elliott who could not direct his header on target. England were denied in stoppage time as Brooke Norton-Cuffy's pinpoint cross picked out Jack Hinshelwood who directed a powerful header on target but Turk tipped the ball behind and secured an important point.

Star duo: Harvey Elliott and James McAtee will hope to lead England U21s past Germany and into the Euros quarter-finals in Slovakia (Martin Rickett/PA Wire) England conclude their group-stage campaign at the European Under-21 Championship with a key showdown against Germany tonight. It's not all been plain sailing for Lee Carsley's defending champions in Slovakia so far this summer, with a routine opening 3-1 victory over Czechia followed by a frustrating stalemate against Slovenia on Sunday. Advertisement Germany, meanwhile, have already qualified for the quarter-finals after successive big wins and will be confirmed as Group B table-toppers if they avoid defeat at Stadion pod Zoborom in Nitra this evening. England will book their place in the last eight by avoiding defeat, while a win will take them through as group winners. The Young Lions would also go through if they lost, provided Slovenia do not beat Czechia at the same time at MOL Arena in Dunajska Streda. 'We all know what this game is about and how much weight it carries, so we try and remove a bit of that for the players, but they have looked very focused,' Carsley said on Tuesday. Advertisement 'We talk about the players having personality on the ball and getting the ball, because it is really important that in the biggest moments of the biggest games, that is what we are trying to prepare these players for. 'We still want to win the group, so that's the challenge that we set the players. We have shown in patches that we have been good, but we can definitely be better. The chances that we have created, but then didn't take [against Slovenia] is disappointing.' England star reveals Lee Carsley gave his U21 side the hairdryer treatment at half-time of Germany defeat that saw them scrape into Euros knockouts

England Under-21 star Charlie Cresswell has lifted the lid on Lee Carsley 's half-time hairdryer against Germany and outlined why a repeat against Spain would be game over for their Euros title defence. Carsley dished out some home truths to his players after an abject first half where Germany, who finished as winners of Group B, raced into a 2-0 lead to put England to bed. Asked what a ticked-off Carsley said to his team at the break, Cresswell said: 'Show some fight, you're playing for England, let's run harder than them, work harder than them'. 'I just was saying to the lads 'just smash into them, let them know they're in a game'. 'We showed that in the second half, but we've got to take that into the next game. That's the thing with European competitions, you get punished [if your level drops] and you've got to be at your best.' England were much improved in the second half in Nitra and scored through midfielder Alex Scott to reduce the arrears to a 2-1 defeat. But it was a performance pockmarked with problems, not least the lack of physicality, an area they will have to win if they are to have any chance in their quarter-final against Spain on Saturday night. 'Spain next it'll be a good game, a new challenge, and I'm looking forward to it,' Cresswell added. 'Spain are a top side. The first team as well, it runs through their system. You know when you play against Spain what they're going to be like. They're going to pass it around and try to make you move. 'But we've got to stand strong and take the game to them because we've got quality in that [dressing] room. We know we can beat them.' Team-mate Omari Hutchinson, who was central to the second half improvement versus Germany, echoed Cresswell's sentiments. 'We want to be dominant,' he said. 'We're going to have to try to take that away from them. We can be physically better than them. We've just got to physically outrun them and take them to the final whistle. 'Cars is big on that. He said last time they played each other it was a tough game for the Under-21s. Obviously they won it but we just want to be able to dominate and win by two goals really. 'It's probably my biggest game for England so I'm looking forward to it.' Saturday night could well be 22-year-old Cresswell's final game in an England shirt and with family making the trip out to Slovakia for Saturday's Spanish showdown, Cresswell's message to his team-mates is clear: don't let this moment pass you by. 'I said to the lads today, it doesn't get better than this,' Cresswell explained. 'You're playing for England Under-21s against Germany and next will be against Spain. It doesn't get better than this.

England u21s clash with Germany SUSPENDED as stadium plunged into semi-darkness and players taken off pitch

ENGLAND UNDER-21s' clash with Germany came to a halt after a floodlight failure. With just seconds left of the first half remaining, the Nitra Stadium in Slovakia was plunged into semi darkness. 3 3 3 That forced Dutch referee Sander van der Eijk to stop the action. Eventually, with only a minute of additional time to go, the official called in captains Harvey Elliott and his German counterpart Merlin Rohl. Lights on one side of the ground were still working, but none on the other were either. Both sets of players were left walking around with half the ground in darkness. Following further discussions, the decision was made to blow 30 seconds early for the break while technicians quickly got to work trying to fix the problem. That summed up a dire first half for Lee Carsley's side as they went in two goals behind. Lukas Ullrich floated a beautiful ball over the head of flat-footed Jarell Quansah that was met by an excellent touch from Ansgar Knauff before the winger drilled past James Beadle after just two minutes. And the scorer turned provider moments before the lights went out as his cross was headed home by Nelson Weiper. England defeated Czechia 3-1 in their first group game, courtesy of goals by Elliott, Jonathan Rowe and Charlie Cresswell. Carsley's men followed that up with a 0-0 bore draw vs Slovenia last time out.
