(AP Photo/Matt Freed) PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sandy Alcantara struck out six in six shutout innings, and the Miami Marlins edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 on Tuesday night. Alcantara (3-7) allowed three hits and walked one in his first win since April 12. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner went 0-7 with a 9.07 ERA in his previous nine starts. Advertisement Calvin Faucher worked around a two-on, no-out jam in the ninth for his fifth save as the Marlins won for just the second time in nine games. Nick Fortes hit his second homer of the season for Miami, a two-run shot off Mitch Keller (1-9) in the third. Eric Wagaman added two hits for the Marlins, including an RBI single in the fourth. Ke'Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz homered against Miami reliever Ronny Henriquez to get the Pirates within one but it wasn't enough as Pittsburgh's season-high four-game win streak came to an end. Keller allowed eight hits in six innings. The veteran right-hander is winless since beating the Marlins in his first start of the season on March 28. Advertisement The Pirates fell to 15-15 since Don Kelly replaced Derek Shelton as manager in early May. Key moment Faucher appeared wobbly after hitting Spencer Horwitz and giving up a single to Nick Gonzales to start the ninth. The Marlins caught a break, however, when pinch-runner Jared Triolo stumbled on Gonzales' hit to right field, preventing him from attempting to head to third. Triolo ended the game on third base as the tying run. Key stat 2.28 — the run support Keller has received this season, one of the main reasons he is 1-9 despite a respectable 4.15 ERA. Up next The series wraps up with a matinee on Wednesday. Cal Quantrill (3-6, 5.63 ERA) starts for Miami against Pittsburgh's Bailey Falter (4-3, 3.49 ERA). __ AP MLB:

Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers was terrifyingly struck in the head by catcher's throw

Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers has gone through countless warmups during his baseball career, but Saturday's freak accident with catcher Nick Fortes had to be a first. With Weathers going through his regular routine ahead of Miami's game against the Rays, he finished his final warmup pitch and started walking across the path of the mound. That was when Fortes' throw over to second struck Weathers right on the head. Advertisement Weathers immediately went down in pain and understandably so — that was incredibly scary. The trainers took to the field to attend to Weathers, and at the time, he said he was fine to stay in the game. But after three innings, Weathers was taken out of the game. He described feeling increasingly worse as the game went on, via ESPN: "I just felt very disconnected out there a little bit just with like, just all that adrenaline left me," he said. "... It was kind of like that episode of 'SpongeBob' where like everything's on fire inside of his brain and I just felt like I was in pure chaos after that happened. So it was just kind of the right time to come out of the game there." Given the circumstances, it could have been much worse. He was cleared of a concussion on Saturday, and the Marlins won, 11-10. Terrifying moment MLB pitcher is drilled in the back of the head by his own teammate

This is the horrifying moment Miami Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers was drilled in the back of the head by his own catcher on Saturday afternoon. Weathers was the team's starting pitcher against the Tampa Bay Rays, and had just finished his warm-up before first pitch when disaster struck. After throwing his final pitch ahead of the the game, he began to walk off the mound, only to be hit in the head by his own catcher Nick Fortes attempting a throw to second. The shocking moment left the home plate umpire open-mouthed, as medics rushed to Weathers' aid after he dropped to the ground. Fortes was attempting a typical throw to second base - with a player waiting there to receive it - but it appears there was a miscommunication between the pitcher and catcher. Weathers, incredibly, was deemed to be okay to pitch in the game, and he went on to throw a scoreless first inning against the Rays. Despite the incident, Weathers was still able to pitch - and he lasted three innings of the game He went on to toss three innings, giving up three earned runs with a walk and a strikeout to his name. Speaking to local radio after the game, Weathers confirmed he was 'good', before adding: 'It was definitely a first. Obviously it's just unfortunate, but also fortunate that it hit me in the top of the head and not the back of the head. When asked about Fortes being visibly shaken by the moment, he said: 'I just told him, "I'm fine, I'm still going to go to battle with you, it's not going to change that fact." It was just one of those weird games.' The Marlins went on to win the game 11-10 in extra innings, moving the team to a 24-38 record for the season.
