Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor Steps Into the Spotlight in New SUPERMAN Featurette — GeekTyrant

Warner Bros. and DC Studios just dropped a new character featurette for James Gunn's Superman , and the focus is on Lex Luthor. Nicholas Hoult is stepping into the shoes of one of comics' most iconic villains, and based on this first look, he's leaning into the role with sharp precision and a pure menace. The behind-the-scenes footage reveals Hoult talking about how Lex is a master puppeteer and condcuctor that is driven and hard working. He's trying to manipulate Superman, who he sees as 'the thing' the world foolishly puts its faith in. He also talks about why it's fun for him to be playing this villain. This marks his first swing at a major DC character, and funny enough, it almost didn't go this way. He screen-tested for both Batman in Matt Reeves' The Batman and for Superman himself before ultimately finding his calling on the other side of the moral divide. Reflecting on how it all clicked, Hoult shared: 'It's funny, because when I first read the script, I remember reading it and there was a little inkling part of me that was like 'Oh, I think you would have fun playing Lex.' 'And I kind of didn't say anything, and then when James [Gunn] called me to play Lex, I did kind of cackle - I think is how I'd describe it. I didn't say anything.' 'I think he said, 'We want you to play Lex,' and I just laughed, because I think there was something in my instinct, when I first read the script, where I was like, 'I think that's more what I should be doing in this story.'" There's clearly a spark of excitement and maybe a little madness in how Hoult approaches the character. If this featurette is any indication, his Luthor will be a more cerebral strategist, obsessed with humanity's future and his place in shaping it. With David Corenswet stepping into the Superman cape and James Gunn guiding the story, Superman is shaping up to be something that hopefully fans love. Superman is set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

New SUPERMAN Promos See a Heartfelt Clark Kent and Pa Moment for Father's Day and More — GeekTyrant

Warner Bros. has a few new promo spots for DC Studios' Superman , and one of them was released in celebration of Father's Day with a heartwarming exchange between Clark Kent and his adoptive dad, Jonathan. It actually feels like it could be a pivotal moment in the movie. Superman is 'set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we'll see how it affected this world's history and has shaped the DCU." The cast of Superman also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, Skyler Gisondo as Clark's best pal, Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce as The Daily Planet's Perry White; Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl; Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl; and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. It also stars Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific; Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampan as Eve Teschmacher; Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, aka Metamorphosis; Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.; Neva Howell as Martha Kent; and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent. The movie was directed by James Gunn and is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.

James Gunn says he's working on something that's "in some way" a Superman follow-up, but it's not "a straight-up Superman sequel"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. James Gunn says he's working on a follow-up to his upcoming Superman movie – but it's not necessarily a straightforward sequel. "What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes," Gunn said in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly when asked if a sequel was in the works. "But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily." Intriguing. A follow-up movie that's not a cut and dry sequel could imply a crossover with other characters – maybe one (or more) of the Man of Steel's Justice League counterparts? Gunn dismissed that theory pretty swiftly, telling EW, "There is no Justice League in this world… not yet." But back to Superman. David Corenswet is taking on the titular role in Gunn's new take on Clark Kent, alongside a cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. As for what else is next in the DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, starring Milly Alcock, is currently in the works and set to hit the big screen next June, and Clayface is heading to the big screen next year, too. Gunn also recently revealed that he's working on a new Wonder Woman movie, but that doesn't have a release date yet. Superman flies into theaters on July 11. In the meantime, get up to speed with the rest of this year's biggest movie release dates.

SUPERMAN Trailer Breakdown and Easter Eggs - Including Baby Joey, Pocket Dimensions, and Mr. Handsome — GeekTyrant

The new trailer for James Gunn's Superman has landed, and it's loaded. This isn't just another 'cape and punch' sizzle reel, this thing is a full buffet of deep cuts, clever nods, and interesting setups for the future of the DCU. So let's break down what we saw, and what it could mean. Lex Luthor Is Fully Off the Chain Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor isn't here to posture or monologue from a boardroom. He's absolutely unhinged. The trailer doesn't shy away from showing his cruelty, especially in one chilling moment where Lex threatens to murder the people who raised Superman. This Luthor is less "evil genius" and comes off as more "tech titan sociopath," and he's backed by firepower to match. Meet Baby Joey We get a surprising reveal as Superman floats in space alongside Metamorpho, Krypto the Superdog... and Baby Joey. In DC Comics, Joey is the son of Metamorpho and Sapphire Stagg. He's not just any baby, he eventually inherits his father's transmutation powers. His inclusion here implies that Metamorpho has a much larger role in Luthor's plot, and may not be as much of a side character as we originally thought. Heat Vision and Flying in Action Superman doesn't hold back in the action scenes, and we get a great look at his heat vision lighting up some armored goons. It's not a new power, sure, but it's nice to see Gunn leaning into the classic Kryptonian toolkit. The heat vision effects also look sharper and more visceral than past iterations. We also get to see Superman in full-throttle flying action! LordTech and the Justice Gang A blink-and-you-miss-it moment shows Jimmy Olsen working on a laptop branded 'LordTech.' If you know your DC lore, you'll recognize that as the tech company owned by Maxwell Lord. Sean Gunn plays Lord in the DCU, and he leads a group called the Justice Gang with Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. That little logo could be doing a lot of heavy lifting in terms of DCU setup. Who (or What) Is Mr. Handsome? There's a strange-looking white-skinned alien that shows up briefly. It's not confirmed in the trailer, but fans have speculated it could be a White Martian or a genetically modified being. Gunn cleared that up on social media, saying, 'The creature is named Mr. Handsome, and yes, he's a LexCorp creation.' That name alone tells us Gunn is having some fun, but don't be fooled. Mr. Handsome looks dangerous. Luthor's Raptors Lex isn't just scheming in solitude. He's got an elite squad of armored soldiers dubbed the 'Raptors,' and he unleashes them on Superman with Metamorpho in tow. There's a particularly intense moment where Luthor stands in the Fortress of Solitude and declares: 'Now, as planned, I'll destroy you.' Classic Luthor with a terrifying modern edge. Ultraman... or Ultra-Humanite? There's a blink-and-stare moment involving a fully armored villain, who later removes their helmet to reveal what looks like a humanoid ape. Fans instantly jumped to Ultraman, but toy leaks suggest he's also known as the Hammer of Boravia. Given the design, there's a strong possibility this is a nod to Ultra-Humanite, one of Superman's oldest foes known for body-swapping into an ape form. One of the trailer's wildest shots shows Superman floating through debris near a massive glowing portal. James Gunn previously confirmed the film features 'pocket dimensions,' and this sequence drives that home. At one point, Superman even grabs fragments of this broken dimension and uses them like weapons—reminiscent of some of the more reality-warping stuff seen in Peacemaker Season 2. From the inclusion of Baby Joey to the threat of a dimension-shattering war led by LexCorp's finest freaks, this trailer makes one thing clear… Superman is going to be a bonkers movie that will be the start of something awesome!

Superman trailer has fans flocking to buy tickets at record pace

Warner Bros released a new trailer for Superman on Wednesday, as fans flocked to pick up their tickets just as they went on sale, seemingly at a record pace. Amazon announced on Tuesday a special offer for Prime members to see Superman a few days before its July 11 release, with early screenings on July 8. With the trailer's debut on Wednesday, it was also announced by Fandango that the Prime early screenings were the ticket retailer's best first-day ticket pre-sales of 2025. Fans have also been quick to buy tickets for the July 11 release, with many taking to social media to show off their ticket purchases. Early box office projections have already been huge, with early numbers suggesting it could open between $154million and $175million. If this record pace continues, it could be even higher, as fans have continued to express their excitement on social media all day on Wednesday after the new trailer dropped. The trailer begins with a massive skyscraper falling and Superman (David Corenswet) swooping in to stop it from hitting the ground as we hear Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) detailing his plan to destroy the Man of Steel. Luthor and his minions are seen destroying Superman's Fortress of Solitude, while we also see Superman/Clark Kent making out with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), along with shots of his parents (Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell). Droids are seen picking up a battered Superman and taking him to the Fortress, along with shots of the hero in battle with Luthor's various cronies. One particular shot fans have been cheering for shows Superman and his beloved dog Krypto the Superdog battle an enemy, punching his teeth out and hitting the camera lens, breaking the proverbial 'fourth wall'. Superman is also see clashing with the abrasive Green Lantern character Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who challenges him to, 'make a move, big blue'. More shots show people all over the world rooting for Superman, which infuriates Luthor, who says: 'They chose him, let them die.' An exhausted Superman is also seen on the ground during a battle, as Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) tells him: 'Hey, quit messing around!' Superman responds playfully (and tiredly): 'I'm not messing around, I'm doing important stuff,' another line that has clearly resonated with fans on social media. The final shot shows Superman using his eye lasers to take out enemies, which fans have praised. One person wrote: 'YOOOOOOOOOOOOOO this is hard AF #Superman.' Another fan wrote: 'I GENUINELY DON'T KNOW HOW YOU CAN LOOK AT THIS AND NOT BE HYPED FOR #SUPERMAN.' Of course, not everyone was as excited. One person blasted the movie for its comedic elements, stating he had 'lost all hope for this film,' and adding it will be, 'stupid and silly'. Superman hits theaters nationwide on July 11, with the early screening for Prime members on July 8.
