Woman was 35+ weeks pregnant with boy when she died on Christmas Eve 2023, affidavit reveals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A recently obtained affidavit is revealing new details about the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child – and the people charged in connection with their deaths. Izabel Reed and Nicholas Gregg have both been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Alexandrea Hunter and her unborn child, both of whom died on Christmas Eve 2023 after Hunter overdosed on fentanyl. Woman arrested & charged with murdering pregnant woman, unborn child on Christmas Eve 2023 Reed and Gregg are charged with the first-degree murder of Hunter's unborn child. They also face several other drug-related charges – including selling fentanyl to Hunter, which ultimately led to her death. On Dec. 24, 2023, at 10:25 p.m., the affidavit says officers with the Roeland Park Police Department responded to the QuikTrip at 5055 Roe Boulevard in Johnson County, Kansas. According to the affidavit, an officer arrived at 10:27 p.m. and went to the women's restroom – where he found a woman, unresponsive and lying on the restroom floor. 'Alexandrea was clutching a lighter, a burnt red straw, and a piece of burnt aluminum foil in her right hand,' the affidavit reads. Despite emergency responders' efforts, Hunter was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. While searching the restroom, the affidavit says an officer found a second piece of foil with a small plastic baggie containing a 'rock-like substance.' Officers also found a cell phone that belonged to Hunter. According to a lab report released on Jan. 17, 2024, the rock-like substance was identified as fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl, which is a fentanyl analog. The substance Hunter was found clutching in her hand was also identified as fentanyl, according to the affidavit. At the time of Hunter's death, Reed and Gregg were already being investigated for allegedly distributing fentanyl in Roeland Park, according to the affidavit. The detective who was already investigating Reed and Gregg then began looking into their possible connection with the death of Hunter and her unborn child. The affidavit says investigators used a confidential informant to purchase drugs from Reed and Gregg on two separate occasions. Lab results confirmed that the drugs bought from them contained fentanyl. Then on Feb. 14, 2024, investigators got a warrant and searched Reed and Gregg's home. During an interview with investigators, the affidavit says Reed admitted that she and Gregg had been selling fentanyl since either late 2022 or early 2023. However, she later denied selling fentanyl in the previous two months – which would include the time of Hunter's overdose death. Second suspect charged in 2023 fentanyl death of mother, unborn baby On March 21, 2024, the affidavit says investigators received Hunter's autopsy report, which confirmed that she died from a fentanyl overdose; her death was ruled as accidental. According to the affidavit, the autopsy report confirmed that Hunter was 35-38 weeks pregnant with a boy at the time of her death. Despite investigators searching Reed and Gregg's home and her admitting to selling fentanyl, they were still working to find evidence linking them to the death of Hunter and her unborn child. On Jan. 23, 2025, investigators checked out Hunter's cell phone and found Facebook messages between her and an account associated with Reed, the affidavit states. Hunter arranged several drug purchases from Reed beginning in early December 2023, according to the messages. The affidavit says the last communication between Hunter and Reed was on Dec. 24, 2023, at 5:35 p.m. – in which Hunter advises Reed that she had arrived and asked if she could come inside, presumably into Reed's home. According to the affidavit, investigators also found a contact in Hunter's phone listed as 'Izzy & Dray;' the phone number was associated with a burner phone that Reed and Gregg shared. Hunter's contact was also found in Reed and Gregg's burner phone, the affidavit states. It included Hunter's photo and a contact name of 'Alexandrea brownstone,' as well as a note of 'ADDICT.' According to the affidavit, investigators also found a plastic baggie at Reed's home that was identical to the baggie found in the QuikTrip restroom where Hunter overdosed. A status conference is scheduled for July 2 at 9 a.m. Gregg was arrested on Tuesday, June 17. He faces the following charges: First-degree murder Distribution of controlled substance; causing death Distribute opiate, opium, narcotic, certain stimulant; < 3.5 grams Distribute heroin/certain stimulants; 3.5 – < 100 gram Distribute opiate, opium, narcotic, certain stimulant; < 3.5 grams Distribute heroin/certain stimulants; 3.5 – < 100 grams Gregg was scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 26 at 9 a.m. Reed and Gregg are currently being held at the Johnson County Jail under $1 million bonds. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Another suspect has been charged in connection with the death of a pregnant mother who died alongside her unborn son from a fentanyl overdose in December 2023.
