Flights to Indonesia's Bali resume after disruption by volcano eruption
Passengers look at electronic boards displaying cancelled flights after the nearby Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupted, at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban near Denpasar, on Indonesia's resort island of Bali on June 18, 2025. Dozens of flights to and from Indonesia's resort island of Bali were cancelled on June 18. - AFP JAKARTA: All flights to and from the Indonesian resort island of Bali resumed on Thursday (June 19) after being cancelled or delayed due to eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, officials said. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, located in East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted on Tuesday, spewing ash 11km (7 miles) high. Eighty-seven flights to and from Bali, consisting of 66 international and 21 domestic flights, were affected on Wednesday by the eruption, the Bali airport operator said in a statement. These included connections to Australia, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia. On Thursday, flights from Bali departed on schedule to Australia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and China, Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi, an official at Bali airport, said in a statement. These flights were operated by airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Virgin Australia, JetStar and Singapore Airlines, Asmadi added. "Until now, all the operations have been running smoothly, both departures and arrivals," Asmadi said. Flights operated by Qantas and its low-cost carrier JetStar were scheduled to operate as normal on Thursday, the company said. A number of flights operated by AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia Indonesia to and from Bali, Lombok and Labuan Bajo, which were cancelled since Wednesday, have also resumed, the airline said. Two airports in East Nusa Tenggara province reopened on Thursday after being temporarily closed on Wednesday. However, authorities extended the closure of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda airport in Maumere until Friday as there was still some volcanic ash in the air posing a risk to flights, the airport's operator said in a post on social media. Dozens of residents living in three villages nearest to the volcano have been evacuated, the local disaster mitigation agency said. According to Indonesia's volcanology agency, Lewotobi has erupted 427 times this year. Tuesday's eruption is the largest since November last year when it erupted several times, and killed at least 9 people. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic activity atop multiple tectonic plates. Reuters

Air India flight to Bali returns to Delhi after volcano eruption in Indonesia
NEW DELHI, India, June 18: An Air India flight bound for Bali from Delhi was forced to return midair on Wednesday following a volcanic eruption in Indonesia's archipelago, near the destination airport. The airline confirmed that flight AI2145, operating from Delhi to Bali on June 18, was advised to return as a safety precaution due to reports of volcanic activity close to Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. 'In the interest of passenger safety, the flight was directed to return to Delhi,' an Air India official stated. The aircraft landed safely at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, and all passengers were disembarked without incident. The airline extended an apology for the inconvenience and said hotel accommodations were arranged for affected passengers. Additionally, Air India offered full refunds or complimentary rescheduling to those who chose to cancel or defer their travel plans. The volcanic eruption was attributed to Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located on the island of Flores. The 1,584-metre volcano erupted on Tuesday, sending a plume of ash 10 kilometers into the sky. As a result, multiple airlines cancelled flights to and from Bali, including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, Tigerair Singapore, and Juneyao Airlines. According to airport authorities and Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, operations at Bali's airport were disrupted due to the ash cloud, leading to dozens of flight cancellations. Meanwhile, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that 83 wide-body Air India flights were cancelled between June 12 and 17, including 66 Boeing 787 services, though those cancellations were unrelated to the Bali incident. The disruption underscores the vulnerability of regional air travel to natural events, particularly in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which includes Indonesia and is prone to frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Watch: Mount Lewotobi erupts in Indonesia; sends ashes 10kms in the sky
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano erupts in Indonesia (Pic credit: AP) Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano located in eastern Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday with a massive ash plume, as high as 10 kilometres into the sky. The eruption prompted authorities to raise the alert status to its highest level and led to the cancellation of at least two dozen international and domestic flights, according to the official website of Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. Though the airport remains operational, its customer service confirmed that flights are being cancelled based on specific routes and airline decisions. Among those affected are Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights headed to various Australian cities. Air India, Air New Zealand, Singapore's TigerAir, and China's Juneyao Airlines also grounded services citing volcanic activity. Volcanic ash from the eruption rained down on nearby villages, with the country's disaster mitigation agency reporting at least one village evacuated by Tuesday night. No injuries or damage have been reported so far. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a 1,703-metre twin-peaked volcano located on the island of Flores, is paired with its quieter counterpart, Lewotobi Perempuan – named after the Indonesian word for 'woman,' in contrast to 'Laki-Laki,' which means 'man.' The volcano has shown activity in recent months; in November, a series of eruptions from Laki-Laki killed nine people and grounded scores of international flights to Bali. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as emergency measures remain in place.
