38 employers with 1,400 vacancies at NTUC-led job-matching exercise for Jetstar Asia workers

[SINGAPORE] The labour movement has brought on 38 employers in a job-matching exercise for the over 500 workers laid off by Jetstar Asia after the low-cost carrier announced its closure last week, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) said on Wednesday (Jun 18). The three-day exercise, which began on Tuesday and ends on Jun 19, was carried out on the airline's premises. The employers include Singapore Airlines (SIA) group, Airbus Singapore and its subsidiary Satair, Changi Airport Group, dnata, Sats, SIA Engineering Company, Singapore Aircargo Agent Association and members, SMRT and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. NTUC noted that 14 of these employers were onsite at the exercise, which had a 'focus' on employers from the aerospace and aviation sector because of the 'strong alignment between Jetstar Asia workers' profiles and the variety of synergistic job vacancies available in these companies'. In total, there were 450 job roles across 1,400 job vacancies, NTUC said. They feature a variety of key job functions in positions such as pilots, cabin crew, customer service, air hub operations, engineering, safety and quality assurance, as well as corporate roles. The job-matching exercise is organised by the NTUC Job Security Council and involved the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation cluster, NTUC's Employment and Employability (e2i) Institute, Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Jetstar Asia. NTUC said the exercise allows affected workers to explore employment opportunities with participating employers onsite and online, receive career guidance from e2i career coaches and tap on NTUC's affiliated unions for support. In a Facebook post, labour chief Ng Chee Meng said he met the affected workers at Terminal 1 on Wednesday, and they shared their concerns and uncertainties. 'I completely understand the anxiety that they feel. I want to assure them that they are not alone,' said Ng, who is NTUC secretary-general. He noted that some workers are also considering a move into other sectors, such as hospitality, and added that e2i will offer support through job matching, career coaching and upskilling guidance.

Samenta: Malaysia's surge in competitiveness due to policy and reforms by government and businesses

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's achievement in climbing 11 positions to 23rd spot in the 2025 World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR) underscores the strong policy measures and reforms implemented by the government and businesses in strengthening the economic fundamentals and making the nation more competitive on the world stage, said Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta). Samenta national president Datuk William Ng remarked: 'The rise, the highest among all participating economies, reflects progress across key areas of competitiveness, in particular government and business efficiency, both of which improved by eight ranks.' Notably, he said, Malaysia has improved significantly in eradicating bribery and corruption, boosting private investment in research and development (R&D), reducing bureaucracy and strengthening employment. 'Malaysian businesses have demonstrated greater adaptability, productivity and innovation, making our companies more competitive. The country's strong economic growth, low inflation and healthy employment conditions all contribute to this upward trajectory,' said Ng. 'Malaysia's improvement is particularly noteworthy when we consider it within the Southeast Asia context. Among Asean members, we now outperform Thailand (30th), Indonesia (40th) and the Philippines (51st). Our progress underscores our ability to implement reforms effectively and signals to investors and businesses that Malaysia continues to be a leading destination for investment and growth in Southeast Asia,' he added. Ng said recent initiatives have played a key role in this progress, especially the rollout of Reformasi Kerenah Birokrasi, which has helped cut red tape and simplified procedures for businesses and citizens. The Akta Iltizam passed by Parliament in March underscores a strong legislative resolve to ensure efficiency in the public sector, he said, adding that the Corruption Perception Index Task Force, chaired by the chief secretary to the government, is tackling corruption and strengthening institutional integrity. Furthermore, Ng said, the Business Efficiency Task Force, led by Malaysia Productivity Corporation, is hard at work identifying bottlenecks and improving the ease of doing business across sectors. 'All these initiatives collectively create a more stable, efficient and forward-looking ecosystem for companies to operate and grow.' The inclusion of Samenta and SMEs in some of these efforts, including the Business Efficiency Task Force and various productivity initiatives, is indicative of the government's desire to drive the economic reform at all levels, including among their small and medium enterprises, said Ng. 'While we celebrate this progress, we must not become complacent. More needs to be done if we are to realize Ekonomi Madani's ambitious goal of breaking into the top 12 of the ranking by 2033. To further enhance our competitiveness and move up the ranking, we need to strengthen digital transformation, improve skills and education, cut bureaucracy, provide policy consistency and boost research and development initiatives. 'Providing greater incentives and support for companies, especially SMEs, to leverage technology and innovate is key. Ensuring policy stability and reducing red tape will help businesses operate more efficiently and respond faster to market opportunities,' he remarked. Ng said these efforts require a whole-of-nation approach as the government alone cannot affect these reforms. Businesses, he added, including SMEs, must move up the value chain in order for Malaysia to become even more competitive and to future-proof the economy for generations to come.

Man allegedly linked to international scam syndicate faces 6 charges including cheating

The joint operation was carried out by the Singapore Police Force, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Royal Malaysia Police from April to June. PHOTOS: SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE SINGAPORE – A man allegedly linked to an international scam syndicate is now facing multiple charges for offences including cheating. Malaysian Ng Hsien Fu, 29, was one of 11 people arrested in a joint operation carried out by the Singapore Police Force (SPF), the Hong Kong Police Force and the Royal Malaysia Police from April to June. Together, the agencies managed to disrupt a criminal syndicate that operated devices used to make scam calls across the three jurisdictions, SPF said in a statement on June 17. Ng was arrested in Malaysia on June 3 before he was handed over to the Singapore authorities. He was charged in court two days later. Besides one cheating charge, Ng also faces five counts of being in possession of SIM cards used to commit cheating. According to court documents, he was overseas on or around May 14 when he allegedly had more than 700 of such cards and all of them were issued with Singapore phone numbers. Ng is also accused of being part of a criminal conspiracy to commit cheating between February and May. SPF said in their statement that the collaborative intelligence-sharing initiative between the three police forces and combined investigative efforts revealed that the scam syndicate had established a sophisticated criminal network across the three jurisdictions. A police spokesperson added: 'Investigations uncovered that the syndicate employed an advanced cloud-based remote operating system, enabling them to link to GSM mobile phone networks across the three jurisdictions. 'This arrangement allowed the syndicate to operate remotely and route fraudulent calls through our local mobile phone networks, leading victims in Singapore to believe that they were receiving calls from within Singapore.' The authorities seized 226 GSM gateway devices in total – 75 from Singapore, 10 from Malaysia and 141 from Hong Kong. SPF also said that the operation was coordinated through FRONTIER+ , a transnational law enforcement platform comprising 10 jurisdictions including Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. Ng is expected to plead guilty on July 22. Shaffiq Alkhatib is The Straits Times' court correspondent, covering mainly criminal cases heard at the State Courts. Selangor stepping up campsite regulations

Selangor currently does not have a specific licence for eco-tourism businesses, but campsites, chalets and other recreational activities still require approval from the local authorities. — Filepic State may introduce targeted licensing framework for eco-sensitive zones Selangor government is intensifying efforts to regulate campsites and eco-tourism activities, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas. It is also considering a more targeted licensing framework in these zones. This move is prompted by the increasing number of campsite operators, estimated to be between 150 and 250 as of 2024. Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said a key measure was the phased implementation of the Campsite Planning Guidelines (GPP). 'Local authorities are currently implementing the GPP in phases, particularly for evaluating new applications and enforcing compliance among existing operators. 'The GPP serves as the foundation for planning approval and operational control of campsites,' he said in a written statement to StarMetro. Ng says the government is looking at measures to protect popular eco-tourism sites. The GPP outlines six core planning principles that include safety, comfort, sustainability, social continuity and economic prosperity, he said. The GPP was developed by the Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) and adopted by the state in October last year. Ng said there was currently no specific licensing system for 'eco-tourism' businesses. 'However, activities such as campsites, chalets and ATV operations are still subject to local authority business licences and must comply with technical requirements from agencies such as the Environment Department and Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS). 'The state is reviewing the need for more specific licensing classifications for activities in sensitive areas,' he added. His comments are in response to StarMetro's reports highlighting concerns over commercialisation along Sungai Kemensah in Hulu Kelang. In a series of articles, StarMetro reported that food operators, chalets and other businesses were operating near and even in the river. Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) informed StarMetro that none of the 70 businesses in Kampung Kemensah were licensed. Nevertheless, MPAJ has long-term plans to regulate and legalise these businesses through a formal whitelisting programme. According to Ng, many of these campsites and eco-tourism activities were concentrated in Hulu Selangor, Hulu Langat, Gombak and Kuala Selangor. The state has implemented measures to ensure tourism development aligns with both economic and conservation goals. 'We want to balance environmental protection with sustainable tourism,' said Ng. 'Key measures include requiring environmental impact assessments (EIA) for large-scale projects and obtaining environmental sensitivity zoning through LUAS. 'There are also strict planning conditions during development approvals,' he said. 'Additionally, the state is coordinating projects like geoparks to promote tourism while safeguarding ecological and geological heritage.' While no centralised tourism operator database existed yet, he said efforts were underway to create a digital system that included both licensed and unlicensed businesses. 'Tourism Selangor, the Forestry Department, LUAS and local authorities each have their lists. 'We are working on an integrated digital system,' said Ng. Regarding the stresses placed on popular eco-tourism sites, he said, 'The government is aware of the issue and is looking into appropriate safeguards. 'Among the options being discussed are limiting the number of daily visitors to certain areas and temporarily freezing new licence approvals in overburdened locations. 'We are also reassessing existing operations in places that lack adequate facilities.'
