Shearer makes Alexander-Arnold prediction after 'disappointing' Real debut

Alan Shearer has 'no doubt' that Trent Alexander-Arnold will bounce back after his 'disappointing' debut for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup. However, the legendary striker is not convinced that Real can win the tournament after they struggled in their opening game in the USA. Following his highly-divisive Liverpool exit, Alexander-Arnold make his much-anticipated debut for Los Blancos on Wednesday against Al-Hilal. The Spanish giants were expected to ease to victory against the Saudi Pro League side but were held to a 1-1 draw after Federico Valverde had an injury-time penalty saved. Withdrawn after 65 minutes, the England right-back was solid yet unspectacular, struggling to make an offensive impact, though Shearer doesn't believe there's any cause for concern. 'I think it's clearly going to take time to get used to a new manager, new sort of ideas, what he wants to do,' the former England captain said on The Rest is Football podcast. 'Obviously, Trent is going to take time to understand and to get used to his surroundings, that's only normal. But he'll have bigger and better days than that. 'I think he'll be pleased that it's out of the way. He may be disappointed that he didn't do so well, the team didn't do so well, didn't get the right result. It'll get better there's no doubt.' The Al-Hilal draw also marked the debut of Real's new manager Xabi Alonso, who replaces Carlo Ancelotti after winning an invincible league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen. Real went into the revamped Club World Cup as the favourites, with Shearer adding: 'They obviously want to do well and go deep into the tournament and win this tournament. 'Incredible day. To have made my debut for Real Madrid, it's something that I think almost every player dreams of. To be able to achieve that is huge for me,' the 26-year-old told DAZN after the Al-Hilal draw. 'Of course, there's some disappointment in there to have not won the game. 'That's the mentality you need to have as a Real Madrid player, to want and expect to win every game we play in. 'We're disappointed not to have done that, but there were a lot of positives, especially in the second half.' 'Whether they will have enough to win it, whether he [Alonso] will have enough time to get his ideas across to win it is another thing. I suspect maybe not. More Trending 'But they've hired him for how successful he's been. One of the big things that he has to get across is how he can manage the big superstars, the big egos at one of if not the biggest football club in the world.' Fellow England legend Gary Lineker concurred, saying: 'It'll be interesting to see if a relatively inexperienced manager, although a successful manager, can stand up, because you've got some big players there with huge egos and you've got to get them to buy into something. 'He has a certain way of playing, I'm sure he's flexible on that and you have to make do with what you've got. But it will be fascinating to see how it pans out, just in this tournament let alone the season to come.' Alexander-Arnold will next be in action when Real Madrid take on Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday before their final Group H clash against Red Bull Salzburg of Austria. Enzo Maresca reacts to Mykhailo Mudryk ruling and confirms Chelsea transfer plan

Enzo Maresca has not spoken to Mykhailo Mudryk since confirmation the Chelsea winger has been charged with doping breaches. Mudryk has been provisionally suspended since December after testing positive for banned substance meldonium. The FA announced on Wednesday the Ukraine international has been charged with the player now facing a lengthy ban from football. Mudryk has firmly denied knowingly taking any banned substances. The 22-year-old, who joined Chelsea in a £89million deal in January 2023, was last spotted joining up with his teammates in Poland following the club's Europa Conference League victory over Real Betis. Since then, the former Shakhtar Donetsk star has been stripped of his no10 shirt, handed to Cole Palmer1, with Wednesday's ruling casting more doubt on his future. Mudryk, nicknamed 'Mischa' by his manager and teammates, has a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031. Asked for an update on the winger's situation ahead of Club's Club World Cup clash against Flamengo, Maresca said: 'I spoke with Mischa in Poland when we played the Conference League final. I haven't spoke with him since then. 'I didn't see the news but they communicated it to me but there is nothing more I can add because I don't have more information. 'Mischa is a Chelsea player. Until he is not, I will trust. It's not just about Mischa. It's in general with all the players.' He added: 'Last time I spoke to him he was quite good, I didn't see him worried, I didn't speak to him since then so I don't know but for sure we will have contact with him.' Chelsea are eager to sign another winger this summer's regardless of Mudryk's availability after deciding not to make Jadon Sancho's loan move from Manchester United a permanent one. The Blues have already seen offers for Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens turned away with Maresca convinced it is an area they must strengthen. More Trending 'We had already one entire season already without Mischa. We are going to decide to go for a winger,' he said. 'In both cases, we have Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto as proper wingers, then we try to adapt with Tyrique George. It's a position we need to improve.' Madueke meanwhile has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge with Newcastle United and Arsenal credited with interest in the England international. 'Noni is our player. In this moment, you can read many speculation [about players]. We consider Noni as our player for next season.' Darwin Nunez approves transfer to next club but Liverpool set 'difficult' price

Darwin Nunez has agreed to join Napoli with Liverpool setting a €70 million (£59.8m) asking price for the striker, according to reports in Italy. The Uruguay international, who joined Liverpool for an initial £64m fee from Benfica three years ago, looks set to leave Anfield this summer after failing to secure a regular role under Arne Slot. Nunez made 47 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, but started just eight games in the Premier League. According to Sky Sport Italy, Napoli have begun talks to sign Nunez and the25-year-old has 'already given the ok' to joining the Serie A champions. However, Napoli view Liverpool's €70m (£59.8m) of Nunez as 'difficult' to meet. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Liverpool are demanding €65m (£55.6m) up front, plus an additional €5m (£4.2m) in bonuses. Napoli are exploring alternative options and are also in talks with Udinese for Lorenzo Lucca, who scored 12 goals in Serie A last season. More Trending Nunez, meanwhile, has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid and it's understood that the Uruguayan has also reached a verbal agreement with Diego Simeone's side. So far this summer, Liverpool have already completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong in a €35m (£29.6m) deal from Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League champions are also set to finalise their £116 million deal with Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz. Milos Kerkez is also expected to join from Bournemouth, with the left-back's father describing it as a 'done deal' with Liverpool earlier this week. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
