UK manufacturers drop US as top export market amid trade woes: Survey

UK manufacturers have dropped US out of the top 3 global export growth markets for the first time, according to a major survey. It has now fallen to fourth place, with manufacturers now favouring Asia/Oceania and the Middle East in response to mounting trade barriers and economic unpredictability, as per the Make UK/BDO Q2 Manufacturing Outlook survey. Historically a consistent second to the EU, the US' diminished appeal comes as six in ten UK firms anticipate a decline in export volumes to the country. A similar share (63 per cent) expects their business to suffer due to tariffs, while nearly a third (30 per cent) are reconsidering their supply chain sources, revealed the survey. The findings aligned with separate data from the National Association of Manufacturers, which showed optimism among US manufacturers has plunged to its lowest level since the pandemic. A striking 77 per cent of American manufacturers identified trade uncertainty as their primary concern. UK manufacturers have dropped US from their top 3 export markets for the first time, as firms shift focus to Asia/Oceania and the Middle East amid tariffs and uncertainty. Make UK slashed its 2026 growth forecast to -0.5 per cent, citing high energy costs and weak investment. Despite Q2 output rebounding to 9 per cent, investment intentions remain fragile, with future growth at risk. The outlook for UK manufacturing appears increasingly bleak. Make UK has slashed its 2026 manufacturing growth forecast from 1 per cent to -0.5 per cent, following an expected contraction of -0.2 per cent in 2025 and stagnation in 2024. The data points to a worrying trend of prolonged industrial decline. Make UK has urged the government to prioritise a robust industrial strategy, warning that the UK's high industrial energy costs must be tackled to reverse the sector's downturn. 'While at first glance the headline numbers may not look too bad, manufacturers are facing a gathering storm of huge uncertainty in one of their major markets, a skills crisis and eye watering energy costs which are providing a harsh reality for many,' said Seamus Nevin, chief economist at Make UK. 'In response, it is essential that the forthcoming industrial strategy takes bold measures to bring down the cost of energy and takes equally radical action to ensure companies can access the people they need to take advantage of a more competitive landscape. If these two issues are not addressed, then we will face the serious prospect of the UK accelerating into de-industrialisation,' added Nevin. 'This quarter's results are a testament to the increasingly challenging landscape our British manufacturers are operating in. The forecasted decline in growth is concerning and the delayed industrial strategy won't help to assuage uncertainty in the sector,' said Richard Austin, head of manufacturing at BDO . 'That said, there remains pockets of positivity. Growing output levels are proof of manufacturer's resilience and last month's trade deals should remove barriers as UK companies seek new trading partners and opportunities for growth. As always, they need urgent clarity and targeted investment from the government if this recovery is to continue into next quarter,' added Austin. The UK manufacturing output rebounded to 9 per cent in Q2 from -1 per cent in Q1, with total orders improving to -2 per cent from -6 per cent, according to the latest manufacturing outlook survey. The export orders rose to 7 per cent, offsetting weak domestic demand (-1 per cent). Looking ahead, output is forecast to reach 11 per cent, with exports expected to climb to +22 per cent, surpassing long-term averages. However, recruitment remained flat at 1 per cent, and investment intentions continued to slide, falling to 2 per cent from 5 per cent in Q1. Make UK has warned that if this trend persists, investment could turn negative later in 2025—posing risks to much-needed industrial growth. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (SG)

I visited Ireland's smallest city that's ‘place of wonder' with cobbled streets & countless bars for perfect staycation

THERE'S a lot more to Kilkenny than hurling or stag dos. The marble city with no actual marble is a place of wonder. The cobbled streets and the countless bars and restaurants across both sides of The Nore really draw you in, and the people make you never want to leave. 5 Myself, Avril and our baby daughter Cara travelled from Athlone 5 We stopped to look at the Hurler's monument outside the Castle walls 5 The 'Shenanigans' walking tour with Nevin Cody was the highlight But the best thing about the place are its locals - and that was a very quick realisation when myself, Avril and our baby daughter Cara, arrived from The Club House Hotel right bang in the thick of it all was the ideal base. Built in 1797 as the local foxhunting club, it was branded a Ian Brennan and Joanna Hannick are its second-generation owners. READ MORE IN TRAVEL Both of them were constantly around the place ensuring their guests wanted for nothing, and summed up the Kilkenny warmth we were greeted with at every turn. We were handed the keys to one of their newly-renovated, colour-bursting The apartment was ideal for anyone with a We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on night one. As a Most read in Travel Mark, the There wasn't much room for dessert apart from a pint of Guinness, and that went down well too. WALKING TOUR Tired from her The After a brief stroll and a look at the Starting off at the main Castle gates, Nevin was easy to spot with his tweed suit, peak cap and wonderful personality. The Nevin was an absolute joy with his endless gags and jokes and was an incredible fountain of information, too. It turns out that Kilkenny are called the Cats for a reason far from cute, and we had no idea that the city held so much history from saints and sinners to infamous hangings and witches. LUNCH DEVOURED Nevin swept us across town as we put our left legs forward, arms in the air and roared 'SHENANIGANS!' for all to hear on our dander from the Castle through High Street towards Rothe House. We were taken to the stunning the Black Abbey - with Ireland's largest stained-glass window before wrapping up at Kyteler's Inn - the home of Kilkenny's infamous Dame Alice Kyteler - who fled to Cara managed to stave off the hunger until we got as far as The Left Bank for lunch, and she devoured her baby bowl and we followed suit with hot pots and chicken caesar wraps. It was nap time for the baby so I went solo from the hotel across to Café la Coco, and realised why there was always a queue outside the place all day long. When Cara woke up, we wandered around town for a while and took in the Castle Yard, which is laced with an array of local crafts. We stocked up on healthcare products from MySkin integrity, wonderful cards from Geraldine Walsh Art and a hand-poured candle Wired Irish Crafts along with a Jellycat baby book from Kilkenny design that Cara hasn't let go of since. 'SUPER FEW DAYS' From here, it was off to Sullivan's Tap Room for dinner - amazing pizza and in a really cool outdoor heated pod where Cara could chill in peace and we could still feel the buzz. Avril then treated herself to a sound bath at KORU Wellness back the Castle Yard. This is a deeply relaxing experience in a yoga studio, lying on mats listening to melodic tunes and percussion - and was an hour of pure chill. It was the perfect way for Avril to round off a super few days, and unwind before setting sail for home the next morning and sure enough, it barely rained. Thank you, Kilkenny - we'll be back! 5 Avril and Cara 5 Nevin was an absolute joy WHERE TO STAY & HOW TO GET THERE GET THERE WE travelled by car from Athlone which took around two hours via the M6, and then down through Tullamore, Mountmellick, Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Durrow and Ballyragget. Travel from Dublin is much simpler via the M7 and M9, and takes roughly 90 minutes by car, or train from Heuston station. STAY THERE THE WONDERFUL Club House Hotel was incredibly central, welcoming, warm and affordable. Married couple accused of violent disorder after Longford filling station brawl

Johnny Nevin (29) and Michelle Nevin (30) were arrested and charged after an initial verbal exchange descended into a fist-fight between two men. Johnny Nevin allegedly traded blows with his rival Christy McDonnell before being pepper sprayed in front of customers and staff. A husband and wife have appeared in court charged in connection to a violent brawl inside the doors of a busy midlands filling station that allegedly saw pepper spray being discharged and two men trade blows in front of horrified shoppers. Johnny Nevin (29) and Michelle Nevin (30) Legion Terrace, Townspark, Longford were both charged with violent disorder following a disturbance which broke out at Hanlon's Gala Shop, Dublin Road, Longford on Tuesday morning. The pair were arrested and charged after an initial verbal exchange descended into a fist-fight between two men and where pepper spray was deployed as staff and members of the public watched on in terror. Johnny and Michelle Nevin outside Athlone Courthouse. In a contested bail hearing before Judge Bernadette Owens at a sitting of Athlone District Court, Garda Patrick Fallon said gardaí were objecting to bail being afforded to Johnny Nevin under O'Callaghan Rules. He said that challenge was being made based on the seriousness of the charge and its maximum sentence on indictment to a term of up to 10 years in prison. The court was also told of how the State's objection also centred around the nature and strength of the evidence gardaí had managed to garner in the wake of the alleged incident. He said it will be alleged the episode in question unfolded at 9:30am when Christy McDonnell who is also before the courts in connection to the incident, entered the store of the service station where he was followed by Nevin and his wife, Michelle. Judge Owens was told it will be the State's case that as the pair came looking for McDonnell, a physical altercation broke out on the shop floor and 'in front of a large number of people'. Garda Fallon said a series of punches were thrown by both men before they were separated by staff. McDonnell, it was stated, left the premises only to return moments later where the scuffle between the pair resumed at the front door of the shop. Johnny Nevin and his wife Michelle Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 13 2025 The court heard how it will be alleged Nevin assaulted his rival and wife, Bernadette by striking both individuals with his fist. That fracas, it was contended, led to Nevin being pepper sprayed inside the shop by McDonnell before fleeing on foot seconds later. Garda Fallon said Nevin made 'full admissions' in interview following his arrest and was essentially caught 'red-handed' in view of the quality of CCTV footage which was downloaded by detectives. Judge Owens was similarly told gardaí harboured concerns over possible witness interference, concerns which had heightened by the fact Nevin was only granted bail the week previously by the same court. In defence, Diarmuid Quinn, took issue with the State's assertion over his client's purported culpability, insisting the Longford man was acting in self-defence. 'He put forward a context to it (incident) that he was defending himself and his wife,' said Mr Quinn. He argued the prospect of remanding Nevin in custody would likewise impose significant hardship on his own domestic situation where he currently holds down the role of being his family's only designated driver. Mr Quinn added Nevin's nine-year-old son was very much reliant on his father to bring him to and from school and was currently dealing with the fallout from an uncle who was terminally ill in Dublin. He said in a bid to convey Nevin's willingness to abide by any conditions the court handed down, his client had come to court with €1,000 as a potential cash bail lodgement. Judge Owens, in delivering her verdict, said while the State had met the required threshold for objecting to bail, the court was obliged to consider if the imposition of a series of conditions would help alleviate the Gardaí's fears. Johnny Nevin allegedly traded blows with his rival Christy McDonnell before being pepper sprayed in front of customers and staff. She subsequently granted bail on the basis Nevin enter into his own cash bond of €1,000 and obey a 10pm to 6am curfew. He was also ordered to sign on three times a week at Longford Garda Station, to stay out of Hanlon's Gala in Longford town, to have no contact with Christy and Bernadette McDonnell including via social media and to remain contactable at all times on a designated mobile phone number. He was remanded on bail to appear back at a sitting of Longford District Court on July 15 when directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are expected to be made known. The court heard there were no State objections to Michelle Nevin who was granted bail subject to a number of conditions also. They included a once weekly signing on condition, to have no contact with both McDonnells and to likewise steer clear of the Dublin Road based filling station. She was remanded on bail to appear back before a sitting of Longford District Court on September 16 for DPP directions.

Pat Nevin warns Chelsea about five Real Betis stars for Conference League final

Pat Nevin has warned Chelsea over five Real Betis players ahead of their UEFA Conference League final clash in Wroclaw on Wednesday night. The Blues have been strong favourites to clinch the trophy all season and easily topped the league phase, winning all six pre-knockout games. Chelsea then eliminated FC Copenhagen, Legia Warsaw and Djurgårdens IF – without their strongest XI – to stroll into the Conference League final. But former Chelsea star Nevin has rejected talk of Chelsea being 'heavy, heavy favourites' for the showdown against Manuel Pellegrini's Real Betis. In an exclusive interview with Metro, Nevin has pointed out that Real Betis beat Real Madrid 2-1 in La Liga earlier this season – and also drew twice with Barcelona in the Spanish top-flight – showing just how good they are. There are a number of former Premier League players in Real Betis' squad including Giovani Lo Celso and Pablo Fornals, who featured for Tottenham and West Ham respectively. Antony is currently on loan at Real Betis from Manchester United and Nevin believes the winger – along with Lo Celso and Fornals – are more than capable of causing Chelsea some problems. Nevin also highlighted Isco – who played for Real Madrid from 2013 to 2022 – and Colombia international striker Cucho Hernandez as top players. 'I'd say Chelsea are heavy, heavy favourites in England, I'm not sure everyone else (in Europe) feels that way if you've watched Real Betis this season,' Nevin said via 'I look at their team and think, well, Isco isn't bad. Cucho Hernández is alright as well. Antony, we know he's capable on his day. Giovani Lo Celso is an interesting one in the creative area at well. 'It didn't happen (for Lo Celso) at Spurs – and you could say the same for Pablo Fornals at West Ham as well – OK, quite good, they go away and I used to think 'Oh, Premier League rejects' – but it's not always like that. 'Sometimes, the timing can be wrong or the wrong style of club for that type of player. 'Look at what Real Betis did to Real Madrid this season – they beat them 2-1. Both their games against Barcelona in La Liga have been draws. 'You think, wait a minute, how does that make Chelsea a heavy, heavy favourite? It doesn't. More Trending 'It's two teams who are well above the standard of this competition. I actually think we have a good final. 'It's not right final, because this competition isn't for Chelsea or the top teams. It's for the teams that never get to a (Champions League or Europa League) final. 'It's maybe more a fitting final for Real Betis but Chelsea will say they're just on their way back (to the top) and need to get through this.' Should Chelsea land the Conference League title, which was only introduced in the 2021-22 season, they'd become the first team to win all three European club competitions and it'd be their debut trophy under their owners, BlueCo, who replaced Roman Abramovich three years ago. Pat Nevin names Chelsea's weak links for Nottingham Forest Premier League clash

Pat Nevin has identified Chelsea's main areas of weakness ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest on the final day of the Premier League season. Champions League qualification is on the line for both teams on Sunday at the City Ground as the Blues continue their fight to secure a top-five finish. Nevin believes his former club Chelsea will get the job done against Nuno Espirito Santo's men but has also raised concerns over the Blues' defence. In an exclusive interview with Metro, Nevin has highlighted the threat of Chris Wood and Anthony Elanga against Chelsea's two centre-backs. 'You have to look at the centre of Chelsea's defence,' Nevin said via 'It's been different, it's changed throughout the season. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. 'It always has to be Levi Colwill – but it's who goes beside him. Trevoh Chalobah has been good, Tosin Adarabioyo has come in, various people have done it – and it's got a bit more stable recently – but this is a test. 'Especially against Anthony Elanga and Chris Wood, they are good players who are hard to deal with. 'Colwill is a litter older now (22) but he will need all the experience in the world to keep Wood quiet. Wood has had a brilliant season. 'His movement is superb and he's so intelligent. If Chelsea can keep Wood from scoring, I think Chelsea will win. 'They have more quality in the rest of the field, they are slightly better. But it's so slight – it's wafer thin between the two clubs.' Nevin also feels Chelsea miss the 'old Cole Palmer' and suggested the suspension of the Blues' No.1 striker Nicolas Jackson may be a factor too. 'Chelsea have been up and down this season,' Nevin added. 'Cole Palmer has been playing – but they miss the old Cole Palmer. That's a worry for Chelsea. 'There's no Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea will probably have the kid (Tyrique George) up front again… It really does make it different.' Nevin does, however, ultimately feel that Chelsea will get the three points they need to book their spot in the 2025-26 Champions League. More Trending 'I think Chelsea will dominate large parts of the possession even though it's away from home,' Nevin continued. 'I've said all season I think Chelsea will get Champions League football. It might have to be fifth! It's fabulously close and anything can happen.' The west Londoners have been in fine form towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign, losing just one of their last eight Premier League games. Enzo Maresca's side could finish the season with a trophy too ahead of their Conference League final with La Liga club Real Betis on Wednesday.
