Netflix drops first look at new political thriller series — and it already sounds like a compelling binge-watch

The streaming service recently dropped some first‑look images and confirmed a August 21, 2025 release date for 'Hostage,' a five‑part limited series led by Suranne Jones . As a sucker for juicy drama (with a dash of political chess and personal peril), I've already added 'Hostage' to my summer watchlist. Jones stars as Prime Minister Abigail Dalton, whose world is flipped upside down when her husband is kidnapped during an international summit. Standing across the table is French President Vivienne Toussaint, played by Julie Delpy, who herself is being blackmailed. From the Netflix Tudum reveal (which revealed this series was originally titled 'The Choice'), we also got a peek at Dalton delivering a speech outside 10 Downing Street, Delpy in contemplative poses, and the two leaders caught in uneasy alliance. Netflix hasn't dropped a trailer yet, but judging by the premise and the cast, this one sounds like a tense treat. And I'm sure anyone who enjoys a good summer binge-watch will want to tune in when 'Hostage' lands in August. Along with the release date and first-look images, Netflix also revealed the official synopsis: 'When the British Prime Minister's husband is kidnapped and the visiting French President is blackmailed, the two political leaders both face unimaginable choices. The five-episode series marks Suranne Jones' Netflix debut, where she not only takes the lead role but also serves as an executive producer. The show is penned by Matt Charman, known for his work on 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Treason.' Jones told Netflix: 'I'm thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I'm really proud of. It's been something I've wanted to do for a long time. We'd talked about projects previously, but for me, it was about finding the right thing. Political thrillers aren't always my go-to, but I'm definitely intrigued by 'Hostage.' And that mainly comes down to its cast and the fact that the story leans just as much into personal stakes as it does global ones. Either way, I'm already invested, and I haven't even seen a trailer yet. Plus, a limited series is easy to binge-watch, especially when there's only five episodes. Netflix's new thriller movie with Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson already sounds intense — and we have a release date
Netflix seems to be doubling down on political thrillers lately. Just days after dropping the first look at its upcoming series 'Hostage,' the streamer has now revealed some juicy details on an original movie that sounds just as intense. 'A House of Dynamite,' a new dramatic thriller from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, is officially coming to Netflix (and in select theaters) on October 24, 2025, and it already sounds like a gripping watch. The newly confirmed plot details line up with what The Hollywood Reporter revealed a few months ago, which also mentioned that the movie's standout element is its real-time format — following government officials in a race against the clock to prevent catastrophe. I love a ticking-clock setup when it's done right, and so I'm hopeful about this one. 'A House of Dynamite' certainly sounds intriguing, and I'm glad Netflix is putting this movie in theaters too. Honestly, any excuse to support your local theater is a win in my book! While details for 'A House of Dynamite' are scarce right now, we do have a small synopsis: 'When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. That one-line synopsis might be brief, but you can't deny that it sounds compelling. And with Noah Oppenheim, known for 'Jackie' and 'The Maze Runner,' behind the script, there's a good chance this story will be both smart and sharply paced. In fact, Netflix Tudum described it as 'a sharp and visceral new story.' Alongside Elba and Ferguson, the cast includes Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke. Antonia Gentry recalls meeting Korean star T.O.P.: 'I was cheesing'

Gentry, 27, described what it was like meeting the Big Bang alum at the recent Netflix Tudum live event when she stopped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday. Gentry recalled how she was resting her feet after a long day when she saw the Squid Game actor walk by. "I'm literally a Looney Tunes character at this point. I'm like knocking things over, tripping over myself, but then I finally get to meet him, and I'm literally shaking, like sobbing on the inside," she told Fallon. "I was very cool. I was like, 'T.O.P., nice to meet you. I've been a fan since I was 14 years old. My mother loves you. I love you. And thank you so much.' And he was just so kind. I was cheesing." Gentry portrays Ginny in the Netflix series Ginny & Georgia. Season 3, which premiered Thursday, debuted at No. 1 on Netflix and has amassed some 17.6 million viewers. In the new season, Ginny's mother, Georgia (Brianne Howey), is dealing with house arrest, while Ginny is navigating the emotional toll of it all. "Season 3 takes place right after the events of Season 2, where Georgia is arrested at her wedding for murder," Gentry told Fallon. "Season 3, there is a massive trial. We see the trial of our lifetimes with these characters as they face love, lies and murders in ways we've never seen them before. And I will say, no one is the same by the end of the season. You are in for a treat."

Live content unites Netflix fans worldwide
Netflix continues to add more live content for viewers hungry for real-time entertainment, including the Tyson vs Paul boxing match, National Football League games and, most recently, the Tudum live fan event that showcased upcoming TV shows. "This is the first time we've done the show in this way, a live format," Shelly Gillyard, VP of Series Marketing for the US and Canada, told Reuters at the Netflix Tudum fan event last Saturday. "Previous years were on the ground fan activations," Gillyard added. Tudum is named after the sound that plays before each Netflix film and series. For Netflix, it was important to ensure that they were incorporating talent from all over the world for the global fan event. More than 100 Netflix stars and creators appeared in the show hosted by actor Sofia Carson, who starred in the airport thriller Carry On. The first two Tudum events took place in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2020 and in 2023. However, for 2025, it was relocated to Los Angeles, California. The 2020 Netflix Tudum in Brazil drew 50,000 people in four days and the post-COVID numbers for the 2023 Brazil Tudum were 35,000. Gillyard said the live event could take place somewhere else in the future and Netflix is focused less on where it is held and more on making it available globally. With major titles like Squid Game, Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Emily in Paris, combined with a performance by Lady Gaga, the streamer capitalised on fan interest. One of the largest draws for viewers was the premiere date announcements for Emmy award-winning series Stranger Things. The livestreamed event revealed that Stranger Things will have a fifth and final season split into three parts, with part one on November 26, 2025, part two on December 25, 2025 and the series finale on December 31, 2025.
