Raglan butcher Neil James wins UK award

The award-winning butcher has scooped first prize in this year's Countryside Alliance Awards. Neil trades as N S James and can be found on Crown Square, Raglan. Previously, Neil topped the Welsh leg of the butchery section and won a trip to the House of Lords, where the Countryside Alliance UK finals were held. Neil then faced off against one Scottish, one Northern Irish and five English butchers in the high stakes final. Naturally, Neil's famous faggots and general expertise brought home the bacon. Neil's faggots are made from prime cuts of pork and lamb, sourced locally. The butcher uses named local farms to cut down on food miles and combines support for local farming and superb animal handling with secret spice mixes for both the lamb and the pork which are contained within the faggot. These are then combined to transform the much-maligned meat into a multiple award-winning treat. Neil continues to challenge the serotype of faggots being 'dull, poor man's food'. Like many an educated palate, Neil knows that good food comes from traditions and how folk had to learn and pass on simple tricks on how to make food go further and do better. N S James has previously been featured on BBC's Hairy Bikers programme, where Dave Myers challenged local youngsters to try the unfashionable food. Naturally, Neil's faggots won many young converts. Neil's commitment to the countryside won this compliment from the Countryside Alliance: 'With a steadfast commitment to low food miles and locally sourced livestock, they're not just feeding the community, they're nourishing its roots. 'Their in-house abattoir and hand-crafted produce demonstrate a level of care and expertise rarely seen today. Add to that their presence at rural events and support for local producers, and it's clear that N.S. James is more than a butcher, they are the beating heart of a thriving rural network, proudly flying the flag for farming and food heritage.' The Countryside Alliance Awards were born of a need to support and promote rural communities. They celebrate people going the extra mile to ensure that rural Britain's food and farming industry, small businesses, traditional skills, forward-thinking enterprises and, most of all, its people, can flourish. As a business, N S James, the oldest independent butcher in Wales, supply both the wholesale trade, award winning chefs, local institutions and its all-important shop customers.

Blind West Lothian man opens up on 'isolation' after rare diagnosis at 17

More info A West Lothian man who was diagnosed with a rare condition as a teenager has opened up on 'isolation'. Neil Atkinson, 26, was told he had Stargardt's Disease at only 17-years-old. The condition causes progressive vision loss, though this hasn't stopped him from living his life. Neil, who lives in Armadale, is now set to compete in one of the UK's top disability football events after his team reached the final of the FA Disability Cup. He says joining Merseyside Blind and Visually Impaired football club has 'completely changed his life'. "Sight loss can be incredibly isolating, so my role focuses on helping people connect with others," he explains. "I manage a team of volunteers who run regular social groups and activities, and I also deliver awareness sessions to local organisations so they can be more accessible. 'Playing in the British Partially Sighted Football League changed my life. It gave me the chance to keep playing football at a high level, even after my sight got worse." Merseyside will face off against Birmingham in the partially sighted final at St George's Park on June 28. Neil added: "It's a huge achievement for us as a group. (Image: Royal National Institute of Blind People/Will Cheshire) "To reach the showpiece fixture at the end of the season is a reward for the hard work we've done over the past 10 months. We had to play a lot of games with a very small squad on the day, but the commitment was there. We deserve to be in the FA Cup final. "I believe that many of the players in our league would stand a chance at the professional game if it wasn't for their sight loss. To have an alternative where we can reach the highest level in our own format is really important." Neil has also been invited into the England Partially Sighted squad, and will join them for a training camp in Turkey later this year. He added: "It's exciting to be back involved with the England set-up. "The trip to Turkey will be my first time travelling with the squad, so I'm looking forward to that. But first, I'm focused on finishing the season strongly."

Lauryn Goodman receives calls from social services over kids with Kyle Walker

Reality TV star Lauryn Goodman, 34, has faced savage slurs from what she dubs "keyboard warriors" on a notorious gossip site - which led to her receiving calls from social services Lauryn Goodman has revealed that trolls called social services on her children with Kyle Walker as she shared her nightmare experience with a notorious gossip website. The reality TV star, 34, has faced savage slurs from what she dubs "keyboard warriors" on "toxic" site Tattle Life. The website has seen influencers and celebrities' private and intimate information posted and gossip to be spread about them. ‌ Tattle Life allows for members to post anonymously about anyone and anything they want, which has led to some heartbreaking consequences for those written about including businesses ruined and some even resorting to self-harm. Among those talked about on the site include Katie Price, Alice Evans, Stacey Solomon and Molly-Mae Hague. ‌ However, the site's founder Sebastian Bond has been unmasked this week after nasty, unfounded claims about couple Neil and Donna Sands on Tattle Life led to them winning a £300,000 libel payout. Donna, who is a fashion influencer and owns clothing brand Sylkie, and tech entrepreneur Neil were awarded damages for harassment and defamation over a 45-page thread on the site. Lauryn met the couple through Instagram and formed a WhatsApp group in a bid to unmask the trolls on the site. Detailing her own horror experience with the site, she told Mail+ that it all began in lockdown while she was pregnant with eldest son Kairo with footballer Kyle while he was on a 'break' from wife Annie Kilner. She claimed that Tattle users accused her of being an escort paid to go to Hong Kong to have sex. However, once her relationship with Kyle became publicised, she said Tattle users began attacking her children with hateful slurs. She said: "They have called my children so many nasty, nasty things which I don't ever want to say because it's so disgusting. They used terms for children born out of wedlock, horrible terms that you shouldn't refer any child by. ‌ "They're so innocent – they're minors and it's sick. I can't understand why anyone would do this to kids. They think they are funny with it but there is nothing funny about it, what have my children done to deserve this? Take away my part in the mess, what have they done? It's a form of harassment." Yet the situation worsened still as she revealed that social services were called on her, claiming Kairo and Kinara weren't being looked after properly. Admitting she was "so embarrassed", she said: "People from Tattle were anonymously ringing social services. They say it on the website too, things like: 'She's going to be getting a call from social services...' and the next thing, I get one." ‌ Lauryn revealed that there had been two calls from social services, which she dubbed "just horrible". "They say my children aren't loved but they are, they get hugs all of the time and I read a book to them every night," she continued. "They said stuff like I don't feed them and when Kairo was a baby they said I was starving him. I mean, I was exclusively breast pumping to give him milk all hours. It was horrible, it was mean and it is totally unacceptable." ‌ She went on to claim that Kinara's name first appeared on Tattle Life - which she had not yet revealed publicly and had only told her close friends and family. "Inevitably, it caused trust issues for me. It makes me paranoid," Lauryn said. "It gave me anxiety and it changed me. I used to be outgoing but now I'm a nervous wreck." The influencer also was left deeply concerned as those on the site would stalk her regular coffee shop hot spots or various other places. She further claimed that her medical records were mentioned on the site, along with wild accusations that she was "offer her head on the gear", referring to cocaine. Lauryn strongly denies that she has ever taken drugs. Lauryn continued: "They contact the companies and point out bad things about people and then they get dropped and that means they lose money, this is affecting people's livelihoods and it's not fair." Following her highly publicised court battle with Kyle, the heat ramped up on Lauryn. She said: "I feel like it has impacted me in quite a lot of ways, not just defamation and libel issues but it has contributed to the circus and the narrative of the saga with Kyle."

College lecturer becomes first Scot to win Silver Award for Further Education Lecturer of the Year

New College Lanarkshire's Neil McMullen honoured at this year's Pearson National Teaching Awards. A beloved Coatbridge college lecturer has become the first Scot to scoop a top accolade in the profession. New College Lanarkshire's Neil McMullen was honoured with a Silver Award for Further Education Lecturer of the Year at this year's Pearson National Teaching Awards. ‌ Chosen from thousands of nominees across the UK, Neil now has the chance of winning the prized Gold Award, which will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in London and on BBC's The One Show later this year. ‌ The first Scottish lecturer to win this award, Neil first arrived at the then Coatbridge College in 1985. Just 18-years-old, he was part of the first hairdressing class taught at the college. Forty years later, he has helped thousands of hairdressers and barbers learn their trade and to support their clients through their lives. His innovative approach to community-based learning has involved students working with cancer survivors and victims of domestic violence, putting those who need it most at the heart of education. Neil is one of 94 deserving teachers, lecturers, leaders, support staff and institutions recognised as a silver winner in this year's awards for the lasting impact they have had on shaping the lives of young people. ‌ Neil said: "I can't believe this. I'm absolutely bamboozled by it. "I've been so fortunate to work with so many amazing colleagues and students. ‌ "I think this is really recognition for all of them as well." Professor Christopher Moore, principal and chief executive at New College Lanarkshire, added: "Neil's career here at New College Lanarkshire clearly demonstrates the deep impact one person can have in their community. "He is an inspiring teacher, a convivial colleague and someone who really energises our college. ‌ "We're incredibly proud of him; this is such a fitting recognition of his outstanding contribution." Sir Michael Morpurgo, author, former Children's Laureate, and president of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: "The dedication and impact of those involved in educating young people is truly remarkable. "Their influence extends well beyond the classroom - offering encouragement, inspiration, and unwavering support that can shape lives for years to come. ‌ "That's why National Thank a Teacher Day is an important opportunity to pause and celebrate all that they do. "I'm also delighted to be able to congratulate this year's Silver Award winners. "Your passion and commitment to shaping the next generation is extraordinary.
