B.Tech dropout, out on bail in 2 cases – key accused in Odisha beach gangrape
The main accused in the gangrape of a college student at a popular beach in Odisha's Gopalpur has two cases pending against him and is currently out on bail in both, police officials have told The Indian Express. Pramod Nayak, 23, from Hiundata village in Ganjam, was jailed in two separate cases – attempt to murder and for making bombs – some years back, said Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M. The SP said they are trying to ascertain whether he and the other accused visited the beach frequently and have committed such offences earlier. A dropout from a private engineering college in Berhampur town, Nayak works at an electronics factory in Bengaluru at a monthly salary of Rs 20,000. He recently returned home on leave. He and nine others went to take a dip in the sea on Sunday. Around 6 pm, they wandered to an isolated part of the beach, where the college student and a male friend also arrived around 6:30 pm. The accused allegedly confronted the couple, after which three of them raped the woman while the others assaulted the man and kept him tied up until around 8 pm, police said. Apart from Nayak, police say Baburam Dalai, 19, and Kunal Pradhan, 24, were involved in the rape. 'Nayak and Pradhan were trying to flee either to Bengaluru or Surat, where Laxman works in a power loom factory, after committing the crime. The police arrested them before they left their respective places,' said a senior police officer. The Gopalpur police registered the case on Monday after the woman lodged a written complaint. The Berhampur SP said the woman and her friend are stable. Police have picked up 10 people, including four minors who are aged 17. Police officials said they intend to try them as adults. The Crime Branch has taken up the investigation and is treating the case as a 'red flag', which needs increased and meticulous scrutiny. Since the crime, the serene and sandy shores of Gopalpur have worn a deserted look. Gopalpur is a popular destination for tourists visiting the southern parts of Odisha. Though the beach stretches around 8 kilometres, only a one-kilometre stretch is crowded, while the rest is empty and dark after sunset. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assured exemplary punishment to the culprits even as the Congress steps up protests against the incident.

Astronomy group races against time to vacate Junta House
Panaji: The ambitious plan of the Association of Friends of Astronomy (AFA) to establish Goa's first solar energy museum has come to a sudden halt after the association was directed to vacate its premises at Junta House. It is now hoping for chief minister Pramod Sawant's intervention to secure an alternative space and revive its stalled plans. Citing safety concerns over the dilapidated state of the structure, the North Goa collectorate ordered the occupants of Junta House, which includes AFA, commercial establishments, and govt offices, to vacate the building weeks ago. The eviction notice struck the AFA mid-stride — just as it was preparing to launch an ambitious solar energy museum in collaboration with the Goa Energy Development Agency (Geda). The museum, intended for the open terrace, was to celebrate the marriage of astronomy and solar science. Additionally, the AFA earmarked funds in this fiscal year to acquire a Rs 5 lakh telescope, an advanced instrument meant to elevate their stargazing facilities. 'We need to have the observatory in Panaji itself,' said AFA president Satish Nayak, his voice tinged with a mix of resignation and hope. The terrace at the crumbling Junta House in Panaji has, for over four decades, offered a window into the stars when Percival Noronha, along with Jayant Narlikar, established AFA in Feb 1982. It was then chief minister Pratapsingh Rane who offered the vacant terrace of what was then Goa's tallest govt building — Junta House — to house the public astronomical observatory. Over the years, the AFA acquired more space within the building, and today, it has 556sqm wherein it has accommodated an open-air observatory, a telescope dome, an 80-seater AC auditorium, an astronomy mini-museum, tinkering and astrophotography labs, a computer lab, the Aryabhatta library, a telescope gallery, and administrative and utility areas. 'It took 37 years of struggle for the association to achieve this,' said Nayak. AFA, which has already overstayed the one-month deadline, now finds itself in bureaucratic limbo. The irony is cruel — decades of institutional labour now risk being undone. 'We cannot shift anywhere immediately since some of the sites we have seen in Panaji are under construction and will be complete only in another two years. Even if we find an ideal place now, the Junta House lift is not working for us to carefully shift valuable telescopes and other instruments using the stairs,' he said. AFA is therefore seeking an urgent audience with Sawant, before the monsoon assembly session, in a last-ditch effort to preserve what remains of its legacy. 'We have a certain type of establishment where the dome of the observatory needs to be accommodated. The floor, the building, the landscape — all of it matters. Junta House was a premium space in the city. We are hoping that govt is able to give us some space in Altinho, where the planetarium can be established in a full-fledged manner,' Nayak said.

Memes flood social media as Trump to host Pakistan's Asim Munir at White House for backing Nobel Peace Prize bid
US President Donald Trump and Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir are slated to meet over lunch, which has recently been announced by the White House. The lunch invitation is more like a closed-door meeting between both the leaders, which is a major development while the world is currently focused on the Israel-Iran conflict. However, more than the updates and information about the meeting, memes have taken over the Internet about the Trump-Munir talk, with Bollywood being one of the major themes of the same. From scenes of Anil Kapoor and Amrish Puri starrer film Rishtey to Sadashiv Amrapurkar's glimpses from the film Ishq (1997), social media is rife with videos which hint at 'what's going to happen when both of them meet." Then comes an iconic scene from Anil Kapoor's Nayak, which was converted into a trendy meme ahead of the meeting. More rib-tickling memes were shared by social media users, most of which took a dig at the Pak Army leader for the meeting. Some even compared him with a Rajpal Yadav character from the 2009 Bollywood film De Dana Dan. A scene from 'Chain Kulli ki Main Kulli', a 2007-released Hindi film, starring young star Zain Khan and Rahul Bose was also used for these hilarious memes. More funny and viral videos were also seen cropping up on the Internet for this upcoming meeting of the world leaders. The White House confirmed this Trump-Munir meeting through White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, who said the visit came in light of Munir's recent response in regard to Trump's role in halting the escalation of the conflict between India and Pakistan.
