Nawazuddin Siddiqui is back playing a ‘struggler' 15 years after his big break 'Sarfarosh'
For Nawazuddin Siddiqui , the story of struggle isn't just a chapter in his life—it's the foundation of his entire journey. Though he technically made his big-screen debut in John Matthew Matthan 's Sarfarosh back in 1999, Nawazuddin's true moment under the spotlight arrived much later, in 2012, with Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2. That film didn't just launch him—it rewrote his destiny. But it took him fourteen long years to get there. Years filled with rejection, hardship, and relentless hustle. That deep-seated experience of battling through the fringes of the film industry has shaped the actor he is today, making him uniquely connected to roles that capture the essence of the underdog. In fact, Nawaz's uncanny ability to embody struggling artists was already evident in Dibakar Banerjee 's Star from the 2013 anthology Bombay Talkies. The role fit him like a second skin—it didn't feel like acting; it felt like reliving. Now, over a decade since his breakout, Nawazuddin is stepping back into familiar territory with 'Main Actor Nahi Hoon' (which translates to I'm Not An Actor), directed by Aditya Kripalani . This time, he plays a man who, despite living in Germany, works as an acting coach for a woman in Mumbai—their entire connection unfolding through FaceTime calls. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's A List Of Cheapest Steel Suppliers In 2025 (See List) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo The film promises to explore ambition, mentorship, and identity through a unique storytelling format that mirrors today's hyper-digital world. For Nawazuddin, stepping into the mind space of a struggling actor still feels instinctive. In a candid conversation with SCREEN magazine, he shared, 'It's very easy because that phase was very long. I was a struggling actor for 12-15 years. I'm still struggling, though in different ways. But yes, when you have first-hand experience, it becomes quite easy to play a character.' His words reveal something many might miss—the struggle never really leaves. It just changes shape. Even after years of success and critical acclaim, Nawaz continues to navigate challenges, albeit on a different scale today. 'Main Actor Nahi Hoon' recently had its world premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California—fittingly close to Apple's headquarters, a small nod to the tech-driven storytelling that the film seems to embrace. As Nawazuddin looks ahead, his plate is full. He will next be seen in Noorani Chehra, Sangeen, and the much-anticipated Raat Akeli Hai 2. But no matter how far he travels, it's clear that the role of the struggler—the relentless dreamer—will always be home turf for him.

Is working with Nawazuddin Siddiqui a ‘big problem' for Costao director Sejal Shah? ‘He is such a…'
Director Sejal Shah shared that from the very beginning, she believed only an actor of Nawazuddin Siddiqui's caliber could do justice to the intricate character of former customs officer Costao Fernandes in her debut film Costao. In a recent conversation, the filmmaker also opened up about one of the biggest problem she faced while working with Nawazuddin on the project and said, "He is such a great actor and he spoils you so much that you want to keep working with him all the time." In the ZEE5 original Costao, Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrays a brave customs officer, Costao Fernandes, who challenges gold smugglers and systemic corruption while dealing with personal struggles. Director Sejal Shah reportedly shared that she had always envisioned Nawazuddin in the lead role, believing he was the only actor capable of portraying such a layered character. Having already collaborated with him on Serious Men, she approached him early on, and once the script was finalized, they managed to align schedules to begin filming. In a recent interview with PTI, filmmaker Sejal Shah expressed deep admiration for Nawazuddin Siddiqui, referring to him as her "go-to actor" and praising his dedication to the craft. She reportedly said that working with Nawazuddin can be both a blessing and a challenge, not because of any difficulty, but because he sets such a high standard that one is left wanting to collaborate with him repeatedly. Shah noted that Siddiqui not only fully immerses himself in a role but also brings the script to life in ways that exceed expectations. She added that his willingness to completely surrender to the director's vision, despite his vast experience, is a rare and admirable quality. In her interview, director Shah reportedly shared that as a first-time filmmaker, working with Nawazuddin Siddiqui was both reassuring and collaborative. She mentioned that there were several moments during the shoot when they would discuss scenes in depth, and Nawazuddin, while offering his insights, would ultimately remind her that the final decision was hers. She praised his professionalism and deep commitment to his craft. Shah also revealed that securing the real-life inspiration for the film, Costao Fernandes, for the biopic took nearly a year. According to her, convincing him wasn't easy, as he had been approached by many since 1990. She described Fernandes as an incredibly honest individual who insisted on portraying the truth, even the difficult parts. He reportedly never asked the team to sugarcoat the portrayal of his family dynamics or avoid the fallout that followed a critical incident in his life.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui Says Untrained Actors Are 'Made To Act ' In Bollywood: 'Happens Only Here'
Last Updated: Nawazuddin Siddiqui says that his true friends are from his struggling days, not the film industry. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is not one to mince words, and in his latest conversation with SCREEN for its Creators X Creators segment, the critically acclaimed performer opened up about the undercurrents of the Hindi film industry — from superficial friendships to the sidelining of truly talented actors. As he turned 50, Nawazuddin reflected on his long journey in cinema, revealing that his real friends are not from the industry, but from the days when he was still struggling to find a foothold in films. 'With time, it's one person today and there will be someone else tomorrow. It's on the basis of need or benefits. The friendships that I also have in life are from old times, not from here," he added. Revealing that there are no genuine relationships in the industry, the actor said, 'That happens because there is an insecurity in every actor here, hence there's no strong friendship or loyalty towards each other. The industry is not strong and united in that way. There is a club that stays separate, they aren't together." Nawazuddin, known for his powerful performances, also spoke about how untrained and inexperienced actors are often given lead roles in Bollywood. He feels this hurts the quality of acting in films. 'An actor who isn't that reliable… they are made to act somehow, this happens only in our industry. Other industries only need professional and trained actors, they don't allow them to come in otherwise," he said. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was recently seen in Costao, a crime drama based on the real-life story of Costao Fernandes, a Goa customs officer from the 1990s who gave up everything to stop a major gold smuggling racket. Up next, Nawazuddin is reportedly busy shooting for the sequel to Raat Akeli Hai in Lucknow. He will return as Inspector Jatil Yadav in this much-awaited follow-up to the hit thriller.
