Naperville News Digest: Free yoga event being held Saturday at The Matrix Club; DuPage breaks ground on new natural resources campus
A free yoga session with certified teacher Anu Malhotra will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 14, at the Matrix Club, 808 Route 59, Naperville. The event, organized by Mindful Mediation Yoga and held in collaboration with the Consulate General of India, celebrates the International Day of Yoga. It is designed for anyone 9 and older and for all ability levels, organizers said. Participants should bring a yoga mat and come in comfortable clothes that allow for free movement. Chair options are available for participants who cannot sit on the floor, organizers said. Complementary refreshments will be served after the event. Register at The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has broken ground on its new Grounds and Natural Resources Campus at the Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville. The 112,900-square-foot facility will be a main hub for crews that maintain nearly 26,000 acres of preserves in the county and will replace aging and scattered maintenance buildings, officials said. Its eco-friendly features including a solar array for renewable energy, rainwater harvesting systems to conserve water, and native bioswales and basins that support stormwater management and habitat restoration, a district news release said. The campus also includes a native plant nursery support building and greenhouse, which increases its ability to collect and distribute native seeds. The $36.4 million project is expected to be mostly completed by February 2027 with final completion set for December 2027, the release said. It is the largest of 32 projects the district included in its 2019 master plan. Several Naperville high school graduates have been awarded college-sponsored scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Recipients will receive between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of study, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Naperville resident Teagan Bernstein-Meachum, who was homeschooled and is planning a career in academia, was awarded a scholarship to the University of Alabama. From Naperville North High School, scholarships were awarded to Soren A. Casey, who will study finance at Fordham University, and Bridget A. Ogan, who will study marketing at Indiana University Bloomington. Neuqua Valley High School scholarships winners are Zachar Druce-Hoffman, who will study aerospace engineering at Iowa State University; Varsha R. Nair, who will study medicine at the University of South Florida; and Aditya Rakshit, who will study computer engineering at Vanderbilt University. Naperville Central High School student William X. Wang, who plans to study mechanical engineering/robotics, was awarded a scholarship from Purdue University. Naperville resident Jayram Palamadai, a student at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, and Moneesha Goduguchinta, a student at Metea Valley High School, also received scholarships from Purdue. Palamadai plans to study computer science and Goduguchinta is to study aerospace engineering. Grow Wellness Foundation and Aquascape will host a Naperville garden walk to benefit mental wellness initiatives on Thursday and Friday, June 26-27. The Petals, Ponds and Pathways walk gives visitors access to six private gardens, with tickets valid for both days, organizers said in a news release. Self-guided tours will be available from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Visitors may visit and return to any garden in any order. Tickets are $15 through June 23 when purchased at or $20 if purchased on the days of the walk at 2186 University Drive. Children 10 and younger are free. Proceeds support the Grow Wellness Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to improve access to mental wellness care, organizers said.

Two local students are National Merit Scholars
Two local students were recently named National Merit Scholars. Gavin M. Greim of Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines won a scholarship to the University of Minnesota to study astrophysics. Pittsboro-area resident Jack Henry Brannon, who attends Chapel Hill High School, won a scholarship to attend Purdue University to study electrical engineering. They were part of more than 2,900 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of recipients to more than 3,600. High school juniors entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Murrah High senior receives National Merit Scholarship
JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A senior at Murrah High School in Jackson won the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. According to the Jackson Public School District (JPS), Kristen Celeste Rhodes is one of only 2,500 students chosen from a nationwide pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. Mississippi Museum of Art, Millsaps College launch new partnership Earlier this year, Rhodes was also honored by the Mississippi Economic Council in the STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program for her academic excellence and perfect ACT score. Park district lands grant for garden lot permeable pavers Naperville Park District will use a $785,308 grant to install a permeable paver parking lot at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency awarded the grant through its 'Green Infrastructure Grant Opportunities' initiative, which helps fund green infrastructure projects, a news release said. The district's multiyear plan calls for the replacement of existing lot at 811 S. West St. with a permeable paver lot. Such pavers allow stormwater to be gradually filtered to the lot's subbase, reducing flooding in the watershed and along the West Branch of the DuPage River, the release said. People use the lot while tending to the community garden plots or using the athletic fields at Knoch Park. The district also received $60,000 from DuPage County for the project, officials said. Naperville students receive corporate Merit Scholarships Two Naperville residents have been awarded scholarships as part of the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Helen H. Liang, a Naperville Central High School student who plans to study law, is the recipient of the National Merit Pfizer Inc. scholarship. Kavita A. Rajan, a student at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville and plans to study environmental engineering, received the National Merit McGraw Hill LLC scholarship. This is the first round of National Merit Scholarship Corp. winners to be announced. The local students are among about 830 to have received a corporate-sponsored scholarship financed by 124 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations, a release said. Recipients can use the awards at any regionally accredited college or university in the nation. Most are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. Registration starts Wednesday for park summer programs Naperville Park District's summer program guide is now available on its website, with registration for residents to begin Wednesday. The guide showcases all the programs and events being offered by the district this summer, including camps, trips and special events like Concerts in Your Park, fireworks shows and outdoor movie nights. New programs added for summer include Code Ninjas programs, local and regional trips, a Cooking for One class, and Real-World Safety and Self-Defense workshops, officials said. Registration for residents starts at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, and for nonresidents at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 1. Fall soccer registration will begin at noon Tuesday, May 6, for the girls league and noon Wednesday, May 7, for the boys league. For more information, go to Applications due May 21 for Naperville Police Youth Academy Naperville teens interested in learning about the Naperville Police Department can apply to participate in a free six-week Youth Academy. The academy will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays from May 29 to July 10 at the Naperville Police Department, a news release said. There will be no classes Thursday, July 3. Applications are being accepted through May 21, with spots filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must be Naperville high school students or entering a Naperville high school in the fall and be in good standing with no criminal contacts, the release said. Parental permission is required, and students must have transportation to the police department. The academy will cover a variety of topics, including police patrols, use of canines, investigations and forensics, the release said. Classes will consist of discussions and hands-on demonstrations.
