AI Traffic Signals Illuminate City, But E-Challans Stuck In Red Light
Nagpur: The ambitious Rs197 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) pilot project is nearing completion at 10 key intersections in Nagpur. However, the automation of e-challan issuance may still take time due to pending state-level calibrations and system integration. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The project, which includes high-resolution video detection cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system, smart sensors, and AI-based signal controls, aims to modernise traffic regulation by capturing real-time violations and issuing automated fines. While most of the installation work at all 10 locations has been completed to support automated traffic signals, land development and cable pooling work is underway at Kachipura site. According to a senior official privy to the development, the system is in its final testing phase. "We are checking all connections, data feeds, and video integration. Once everything is verified, the system will be presented for final approval," the official said. The Command and Control Centre (COC) will soon begin displaying live traffic data from these intersections, he said. However, even after making the infrastructure fully functional, officials say, e-challan generation cannot begin immediately. "For challans to be legally valid, the detection system must be certified by state agencies as per Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR). Also, it must be integrated with National Informatics Centre databases to fetch accurate owner details," said the official, adding, "Without these crucial steps, any automated fine could be challenged in court. " These enforcement roadblocks come at a time when the city's traffic violation penalty recovery backlog is already staggering. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Between 2021 and June 2025, Nagpur traffic police issued over 30 lakh challans for various violations, but fines worth Rs248.19 crore remain unpaid. Of these, only 2.88 lakh cases — a mere 9.6% — were forwarded to court, leaving the vast majority of violators untouched by any legal consequence. Experts warn unless enforcement is tightened and compliance improved, even the most advanced surveillance system will have limited impact. "Detection is not the challenge — it's what you do with it," said a senior civic official. Without court calibration, NIC integration, and manpower to process violations, Nagpur risks turning IITMS into a costly but toothless display of technology.

Mizoram ready to begin biometric enrolment of Myanmar refugees
1 2 Aizawl: Mizoram govt is fully prepared to undertake biometric enrolment of over 32,000 Myanmar refugees taking shelter in the state, and the exercise is expected to commence soon, a senior state home department official said on Thursday. State home secretary Vanlalmawia informed TOI that the biometric enrolment portal has been designed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) is ready for use. "Preparations are in full swing for the collection of biometric data of the Myanmar refugees. The NIC experts will impart training on biometric enrolment, using the online portal for the purpose, to the district officials on Friday," Vanlalmawia said. He said the final discussion was held through video conference with the officials of ministry of home affairs (MHA) on May 16 when the final touch for the biometric enrolment exercise was deliberated. It took around a month for the NIC to complete designing the online portal, and it is now ready, he added. The instruction from the central govt to conduct biometric enrolment of the Myanmarese refugees was kept in abeyance by the previous Mizo National Front (MNF) govt in 2023 on the pretext that the election to the 40-member state legislative assembly was forthcoming by the last part of the year.

E-TRANS 2025 WORKSHOP: Technology, digitisation driving Haryana's transport sector forward
Haryana transport minister Anil Vij on Monday said that to reduce road accidents the state government is focusing on education, enforcement, engineering, environment and emergency. Vij was addressing the inaugural session of the two-day workshop 'e-Trans 2025' organised by the Union ministry of road transport and highways and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in Chandigarh. Participants from the Union ministry of road transport and highways, along with representatives from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Delhi and Chandigarh are attending this workshop. Addressing the issue of road accidents, Vij underlined the need to leverage technology to reduce accidents and save precious lives. He noted that the increase in vehicle traffic over the past two decades has led to a worrying rise in road accidents. Vij said that more than 10 lakh road accidents occurred across the country between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2025, with over 23,000 accidents reported in Haryana during the same period. Meanwhile, secretary of the Union ministry of road transport and highways V Umashankar, stated that the target is to reduce road accidents by 50% by 2030. This objective can be achieved through the effective use of data and new technology, he said, adding several new initiatives and positive changes have been implemented in the country's transport sector, benefiting citizens significantly. Umashankar said a large number of services have been made faceless, which has simplified processes for people, saving both time and money. He said to improve the traffic system, the central government provides grants to establish state-of-the-art driving training centers in districts across the country. He appealed to the states to maximise the use of these grants and open such centers at the district level. Emphasising the importance of technology and data, he said these tools are essential to simplify people's lives and eliminate corruption.

Chandigarh forest department encourages students to plant and track trees using QR codes
1 2 3 Chandigarh: 'Plant a tree and track its growth story through a QR code' – that's the plan the UT forest department is going to implement to encourage school and college students to get involved in tree plantation and take ownership of the saplings they plant. It is part of several components of this year's major plantation drive to be undertaken in the coming months, in which around 5 lakh new saplings are planned to be planted. A special focus area is getting students involved in the tree plantation. The forest department has held discussions with the education department regarding students planting saplings this season in large numbers. The department's target is around 20,000 saplings to be planted by the students. "After planting a sapling, students will get a certificate, which will have a unique QR code for the sapling planted. The student will be able to check the growth status of the plant on a portal designed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Chandigarh. The QR code will have all the details of the plant, like its species, its scientific name, the tree family it belongs to, country of origin, flowering and fruiting times, botanical and common names, health or medicinal benefits, and economic relevance," said a senior UT official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! If the student spots any deficiencies, he can inform authorities, which can take remedial steps. This process will give a sense of ownership to the students," the official said. Replacing Dead, Diseased Plants This year, the department plans to make a special effort to replace the dead or diseased trees. For instance, in Rajendra Park, more than 10,000 new mango trees are planned to be planted to replace the trees that died over the years. Similarly, around the roads in different areas of the city, more than 2,500 trees will be planted to replace the trees that have died or been removed over the years. "Special attention will be given to replace a missing tree with the same variety as the original variety. Replacements will be in tune with the original tree plan of the city. Planting trees around roads will also help in controlling the roadside dust, which is a major cause of air pollution," said the official. The eco-restoration and tree re-densification are the core areas of the plantation drive, said the official. Another key component of the drive will be involving the industry in the plantation drive. "The industry partners have agreed to give saplings to the general public for plantation," said the official. Similarly, the roles of different UT departments and the municipal corporation have been integrated to achieve the target of the tree plantations. The tree plantation targets have been set in consultation with these departments.
