Ger Nash seeking response from 'hurt' Cork City

Come 10pm last Saturday night, Cork City found themselves in the lonely position of 10th in the Premier Division table. City's defeat to Bohemians on Friday night, coupled with Sligo Rovers one-nil win over Waterford the following day ensured exactly that. The momentum built from a positive performance against Shelbourne prior to the mid-season break - albeit without the much-needed three points - was taken away in that loss to Alan Reynolds' Bohs, as City boss Ger Nash illustrated on Thursday. "I think we were hurt by Friday night, that's important to say," Nash said. "We felt we had built a little bit of momentum after the performance against Shels. I think it's probably the first time I've seen that confidence be affected, and that's something we had to address, we had to talk about." Stephen Bradley's Shamrock Rovers are next up on Friday night, with the visit of high-flying Drogheda and St Pat's to come next week. "I'm looking for a response on Friday night, we've spent a lot of time with the players this week - on the grass, off the grass - and I went to watch Drogheda and Shamrock Rovers on Monday, so we're prepared as well as we can be, and it's time for us to put in a performance now over the next week. It's imperative." A response is what is wanted by Nash and assistant David Meyler, and a response is what they so badly need. That response, for Nash, needs to consist of being defensively resolute, and having the bravery to play football as they did against Shels and during parts of the defeats to St Pat's and Galway United. "We have to be confident in who we are and what we are about," the 38-year-old said. "That's maybe something we didn't do in the Bohemians game in the first half-hour, where I think we were rocked a little bit. "As much as we are up against a really difficult opponent (in Shamrock Rovers), I think we really need to focus on us, and be the best version of us and give the fans the best version of us. "I think we showed that against Shelbourne in some aspects, and we need to get back to that level of performance, but importantly, we need to put a huge emphasis on getting points on the board over the next eight days, with three games to play." He added: "We need to stand tall, puff our chests out and represent this great club. As much as we're going to play a tough team, it has to be about us and what we are going to do to get ourselves out of the situation that we are in." Dutch winger Malik Dijksteel - who has been working his way back to full fitness after a lengthy injury absence - may feature more prominently on Friday after a number of appearances off the bench. Midfielder Rio Shipston will not make the clash with the table toppers, nor will Matty Kiernan, who is sitting his Leaving Cert. "Malik is one who has stepped up... he's in a better place than he was two weeks ago, so he's one that will be able to have more football."

How Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is quietly becoming the best Canadian basketball player ever

Professional basketball's often contentious greatest of all time debate will likely never be settled, but the conversation about the greatest Canadian to play in the NBA could very well be resolved as early as this week. The Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who this season joined two-time NBA regular season MVP winner Steve Nash of B.C. as the only Canadians to win the award, has dominated this year's NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers, a series that continues in a potentially decisive Game 6 tonight in Indianapolis. Should the Thunder emerge victorious, or in a Game 7 on Saturday back in Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander is the odds-on favourite to be awarded the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. Only a handful of players have won both MVP honours in a single season, all of them among the game's true greats : Willis Reed, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Moses Malone, Magic Johnson, Lebron James, who did it twice, and Michael Jordan, who was bestowed both honours on four occasions. While Nash's MVPs came in successive seasons (2004-2006) when he was key to the Phoenix Suns' success, he never played in the Finals during his remarkable 18-season Hall of Fame career. (Although he would later become a de facto champion by way of consulting duties with the Golden State Warriors in 2017.) In an interview with The Ringer earlier this year, Nash himself admitted that if Gilgeous-Alexander isn't already, 'he'll be the best Canadian to ever play the game — and in short order.' He's done so by approaching the game — on and off the court — with composure and humility, while developing into a leader who recognizes his broader role for the young team and its fans. A case in point: he signed 429 autographs in the hours before Game 2, thinking he'd only signed a few dozen. 'That's insane' • SGA reacts to how many autographs he signed prior to Game 2. Shai and the Thunder return home for a PIVOTAL Game 5 vs. the Pacers tonight at 8:30pm/et on ABC! 'Greatest season for a Canadian' Statistically, the 26-year-old from Hamilton, Ont., conclusively produced the single best regular season by a Canadian player this season. His 32.7 points per game average led the league and was supported by five rebounds, 6.4 assists and a field goal percentage of 51.9 per cent. His true shooting percentage, a stat used to determine shot efficiency, was an incredible 63.7 per cent. Only two other players in the NBA's history have averaged similar figures: Jordan and 2017-18 MVP James Harden. 'Steve (Nash) would tell you this is the greatest season for a Canadian,' said Dwayne Washington, founder of UPLAY Canada, who coached a young Gilgeous-Alexander for several years before he left to finish high school playing against stiffer competition in Tennessee. 'So when the dust clears, people are only gonna look at statistics, and statistically it's undeniable.' Similarly, Gilgeous-Alexander, already the recipient of the Western Conference Final MVP award, has produced playoff numbers that put him in rare air. He has scored 30-plus points in 15 games, tying him with Kobe Bryant for the most in a single postseason and one off the record held by Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon. He also set an NBA record by scoring at least 30 points in 10 straight home games. More history for SGA 🔥 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joins Kobe Bryant, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history with 15 or more 30+ point games in a single postseason! Three of those have come in the Finals, during which he is averaging 32.4 ppg and 2.4 steals, both of which rank among the top five in history, per the league . That includes a 35-point performance in Game 4 — highlighted by a 15-point run in the final 5 minutes to help the Thunder come from behind and tie the series up at two apiece — and a 31-point, 10-assist double-double in Game 5. According to Sportsnet , his 162 points through the first five games are the fourth most by any player. He also joined an elite group last week when he became the 12th player with more than 3,000 total points in a single season (regular season and playoffs combined). Another staggering number: the 429 autographs he signed before Game 2. He thought he'd only done 50 or 60. Humble and hard-working Like he was all season, Gilgeous-Alexander has continued to be humble about his success on the court, promoting selflessness and a team-first mentality in post-game interviews, often hailing his teammates' contributions as being just as vital. After Game 5, he heaped praise on forward Jalen Williams' 40-point effort and said he was just 'trying to affect winning.' 'Trying to make a basketball play. I was trying to help the team win, trying to be in position for the next rotation, next play defensively. Whatever comes with that, comes with that.' Washington, whose program has provided coaching and mentorship to other Canadian NBA talent such as R.J. Barrett, Lindell Wigginton, and Shaedon Sharpe, told National Post he's been impressed with how Gilgeous-Alexander is handling the defensive pressure, even likening it to what Jordan experienced in the playoffs. 'That is so hard to do. Some of the best athletes in the world are double- and triple-teaming you, and you're still getting 30, 10 assists and winning with a team so young,' he explained. (The Thunder's average age is just 25.6 years, making them the youngest squad to play for a title since the 1977 Portland Trailblazers.) Washington offered more comparisons to Jordan, along with Bryant, in terms of Gilgeous-Alexander's approach to the game off the court — 'He's out-studying, outmaneuvering, out-planning, and out-working people before they even step on the court,' he said — and a fall-away mid-range jump shot that both legends deployed with lethal efficiency throughout their careers. He said the six-foot-six guard has been working on that shot for years, and it comes naturally to him. However, most NBA coaches preach against the generally low-percentage shot attempt despite it being a go-to for elite offensive players. Washington said Gilgeous-Alexander has been told not to shoot it 'most of his career,' but he's continued to perfect it anyway. 'I know he's been working on it, so it's great to see it in real time,' Washington said. 'I'll be honest with you, if he'd listen to other people telling him what not to do, he wouldn't be there.' Nash also offered a Jordan and Bryant comparison in an interview with the Toronto Star last month, saying Gilgeous-Alexander 'does the same thing they do.' 'If you look at the numbers and you break it down, there's a lot of things he does that are greater than everyone that's even close to those type of players. So he's ascending towards that category.' He'll look to continue that ascension when the NBA Finals resume tonight. Game time is 8:30 p.m. ET. Former All-Star hurler arrested in Dublin just days before separate drink-drive case

The Sunday World has learned that Mr Nash (40) was arrested on Saturday evening at a hotel in the Dublin 1 area Former All-Star hurler Anthony Nash was arrested and criminally charged with public order offences in Dublin this weekend, just two days before his court appearance on a separate drink-driving charge in Cork. The Sunday World has learned that Mr Nash (40) was arrested on Saturday evening at a hotel in the Dublin 1 area. It is understood that gardaí were contacted on Saturday over concerns that the former Cork goalkeeper 'needed help'. Gardaí attended the scene and the 40-year-old was arrested for public order offences, and taken to Mountjoy garda station on the northside of Dublin city. He was granted station bail and is scheduled to appear at Dublin District Court in early July He was later charged with public order offences arising from the incident and was charged in the station. He was granted station bail and is scheduled to appear at Dublin District Court in early July. A garda spokesperson said: 'Gardaí have arrested a man further to a public order incident in Dublin 1 that occurred on Saturday June 14, 2025. 'The man (aged in his 40s) was detained under the Public Order Act, at a garda station in the Dublin area. He has since been charged and is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice at a later date. Investigations are ongoing.' It is believed that Mr Nash may have been in the capital to attend the United Rugby Championship final at Croke Park between Leinster and the Bulls. The hotel where he was later arrested held a drinks reception, which the former All-Star hurler had attended. Former Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash. Photo: Diarmuid Greene/Sportsfile News in 90 Seconds - June 19th This took place just two days before he appeared in Cork District Court on a unrelated drink-driving charge. On Monday, a judge dismissed this drink-driving charge against him. Cork District Court heard that Mr Nash asked a garda, 'Do you know who I am?' when he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after his car was found in a ditch with the back of the vehicle protruding on to the road. Mr Nash of Barters Wood in Tower, Blarney, Co Cork, also told the garda, 'I'm drunk' when she approached him on August 9, 2023, the court heard. Garda Catherine Byrne told the court a Skoda Kodiaq crashed into a ditch on the side of the road at Cloghroe, Blarney, Co Cork. She arrived at the scene at 9.22pm, having received a report from radio control minutes earlier. Anthony Nash playing for Cork. Photo: Sportsfile Gda Byrne said a male came from the driver side of the vehicle. She said he was 'dishevelled and appeared distressed'. She said he identified himself as the driver and he stated, 'I'm drunk.' She asked him if he was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident – and he replied he was, the court was told. I asked if he had alcohol and he said, 'Yes, a bottle of wine' 'He then said, 'Do you know who I am?' I replied, 'No'. I asked if he had alcohol and he said, 'Yes, a bottle of wine'. He said, 'I'm Anthony Nash',' Gda Byrne said. Mr Nash was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving at 9.35pm on the day in question. Gda Byrne said at that point he became visibly upset and said: 'My life is ruined.' Mr Nash was taken to Gurranabraher garda station in the patrol car. He was asked if he wanted to give a sample of blood or urine. He opted to provide urine but was unable to do so. He then complied with a direction to give a blood sample. The allegation in the summons was that Mr Nash had 236 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. That exceeds the limit of 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Paula McCarthy, defending Mr Nash, said her client had fully complied with gardaí and had been unable to provide a urine sample 'through no fault of his own'. She told Judge Philip O'Leary that while Gda Byrne received a call about the incident at 9.15pm, there was no evidence as to the time of driving. Ms McCarthy applied for the case to be dismissed on the grounds that there was absence of evidence on the time of the driving or the fact of the driving. For a case of this type to succeed, there must be evidence the driving occurred within three hours of a test for alcohol being carried out. The judge said as there was no evidence of the time of driving, he had no option but to dismiss the case.

Popular 1990s singer Sheqal passes away at 60

Sheqal succumbed to bacterial infection and complications from fluid in the lungs at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban on June 17. Photo: Bernama Popular 1990s singer Sheqal, whose real name was Shaharim Sallehudin, had yearned to return and settle down in his hometown of Kampung Tanjung Putus in Raub, Pahang. However, that dream was left unfulfilled following his passing on June 17. His wife, Normah Mohd Yussof, 58, said the late singer, who had been wheelchair-bound after suffering four strokes since 2020, was admitted to hospital on June 5 and placed in an induced coma the following day. "I didn't expect his passing to happen so suddenly. As his wife, I had hoped he would recover and return to the family in good health. However, he passed away very peacefully, without any pain at all. I was by his side in his final moments. "My family and I accept Allah's will. The pain he endured since 2020 is now gone. During that period, he was active and able to take care of himself independently. Before he passed, there were no signs of decline. He only said he was short of breath,' she told reporters when met at Masjid Tuanku Ja'afar on June 17. Sheqal, 60, succumbed to bacterial infection and complications from fluid in the lungs at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban, at 12.31pm. His final rites were carried out at Masjid Tuanku Ja'afar and his remains were buried in his hometown in the evening. The singer, best known for the hit song Cinta Nusantara , had previously expressed his wish to return to his hometown after spending more than 40 years away, and to continue creating art. When asked about his personality, Normah described him as kind-hearted and always positive with their children. "Recently, his mother came to visit him. At the time, he was still in an induced coma, but we could see that he was trying hard to wake up and even responded slightly,' she added. Meanwhile, renowned singer Datuk Nashrudin Elias, better known as Nash, described Sheqal as a multi-talented artiste who pioneered Nusantara and contemporary music, while also having a knack for painting. Nash, who had known Sheqal for over 40 years, said he was not only talented but also possessed admirable character and a distinct artistic identity. "His passing is a great loss to the country's creative industry. I have known him from the time he worked as a leather shoe and bag tailor at Kompleks Pertama in Kuala Lumpur. I was also impressed by his abstract artwork and anyone who still has one of his paintings is truly lucky. "We've lost an extraordinary artiste. I once performed with him, and to me, his performances were always creative and distinctive, with his own melodious vocal style,' he said. – Bernama
