Johor cops bust 21 drug rings, seize RM81m in drugs since January

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor police have crippled 21 drug trafficking syndicates and seized illicit narcotics worth RM81.07 million in the first five months of this year. Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the success of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) also led to the arrest of 58 syndicate members and asset seizures worth RM2.26 million. 'Additionally, JSJN recorded an impressive performance, making a total of 10,794 arrests for various drug offences during the same period. They also seized drugs worth RM83.18 million and forfeited assets valued at RM7.49 million,' he said in his speech at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters monthly gathering here today. Kumar said the Internal Security and Public Order Department also recorded seizures of illicit cigarettes worth RM48,000 and misappropriated subsidised palm oil worth RM1.11 million. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department contributed by achieving a 59.64 per cent resolution rate for index crimes during the period. Kumar also said that 54 rape cases involving teenagers were recorded from 2023 until last year. 'One of the primary causes is the easy accessibility of pornographic content on social media, the general lack of awareness about Malaysian laws concerning such crimes, and the breakdown of family structures. This situation results in teenagers missing out on attention, affection, and supervision from their parents,' he added. To proactively address the issue, the Sexual Investigation Unit has visited schools to deliver talks and raise awareness among students about such crimes. He urged all parties to take these cases seriously, advising parents to express affection, raise their children with strong religious and moral values and stay vigilant about their children's activities and social circles. Meanwhile, at the monthly gathering, 47 individuals received appreciation awards, including four members of the public and 43 police officers from various ranks, as well as public servants from the Johor contingent. -- BERNAMA

KANGAR: Belacan, chocolate bars and keropok lekor — these familiar favourites turned out to be a cover for a pungent plot here. The drugs, valued at RM9,238, were found in the possession of a 21-year-old Thai national who was arrested while attempting to board the Electric Train Service (ETS) heading south from Bukit Keteri Railway Station. Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the incident took place at Bukit Keteri railway station after police received information regarding a Thai man carrying cannabis who was planning to board the ETS. "Based on the information received, our personnel from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Perlis police contingent headquarters went to the station and successfully identified the 21-year-old suspect. "The man was believed to be waiting for the ETS heading south, and upon inspecting the backpack he was carrying, we found 27 plastic packets containing green plant material suspected to be cannabis, weighing 2.98 kilogrammes and valued at RM9,238," he said. Muhammad said preliminary investigations revealed the suspect was paid more than RM1,000 by the syndicate to deliver the cannabis via the ETS. "The cannabis was shaped and packaged to resemble shrimp paste, chocolate bars, and raw 'keropok lekor' in an attempt to fool the authorities during inspections. "The supply is believed to have been sourced from a neighbouring country, with Perlis used as a transit point before being distributed or sold in southern states. "The suspect's modus operandi involved delivering drug supplies from Thailand into the country on demand, for a fee of RM1,500," he said. Following this, police arrested another suspect, a 25-year-old local man in Alor Setar, who is also believed to be involved in the drug distribution syndicate. "Initial drug screening on the main suspect found him positive for methamphetamine. A background check revealed he has four prior criminal records related to drug offences. "The total amount of drugs seized in this case could serve approximately 29,870 drug addicts," he said. Muhammad said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until this Thursday to assist with investigations.

SIBU (June 16): Police have successfully busted the largest drug trafficking syndicate in Sarawak's history with the arrest of a married couple on June 12 and 13, said Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata. He said the suspects were arrested in raids at three separate locations, namely beside a shop in Jalan Pedada and two terrace houses in Lorong Permai Jaya here. 'The couple are suspected of being involved in drug trafficking activities. 'The arrests led to the seizure of a large amount of drugs worth RM532,934 involving 7,000g of syabu and some Eramin 5 pills. This amount of drugs can be used by about 49,702 drug addicts,' he said during a press conference at Wisma Pengaman in Sibu District Police Headquarters here today. Mancha said that police also seized various assets believed to be proceeds from the syndicate's illegal activities, estimated to be worth RM7.9 million. 'The assets included cash totaling RM5.1 million, four gold bars, two gold necklaces, three Rolex watches, two luxury cars and a saloon car with the total seizure worth of RM8.5 million which is the largest amount ever recorded in Sarawak. 'Among other items that were also seized for investigation purposes include identity cards, house keys, and drug packaging equipment,' he added. Mancha said initial investigations revealed the couple were the masterminds of a drug trafficking syndicate operating in the Sibu area, believed to have been active since 2015. He added that the drugs were obtained from Peninsular Malaysia and sent via courier services for distribution in the local market in Sibu. 'Urine test results showed both suspects tested negative for drugs and had no prior criminal records. 'The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a death sentence or life imprisonment and not less than 12 strokes of whipping if not sentenced to death. 'Both suspects have been remanded for seven days from June 13 to 20 to assist in further investigations,' he said. Mancha said police are now actively pursuing other members of the syndicate to ensure it is fully crippled. 'The Royal Malaysia Police, especially the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), remain committed and determined to combat drug trafficking activities which are the country's main enemy,' he said. The public is urged to channel any information related to drug abuse or trafficking by contacting the NCID hotline at 012-2087222. Also present were Sarawak NCID chief ACP Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah and Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.
