[UPDATED] Ganja haul: Over 73kg seized in Kepong, 2 held
KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman's Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID), in collaboration with its Perlis counterpart, foiled a drug trafficking attempt with the seizure of more than 73kg of cannabis in Kepong. The operation, based on gathered intelligence, was carried out at 1.25am on June 17. Two local men were arrested. Officers intercepted a Perodua Aruz by the roadside along Jalan Baiduri, where the suspects, aged 38 and 33, were detained. "Upon inspecting the vehicle, we found 70 compressed packets of cannabis weighing a total of 73.25kg," said Bukit Aman acting NCID director Deputy Commissioner Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali in a statement today. He said the drugs, believed to be for distribution in the Klang Valley, have an estimated street value of RM227,063 and could supply about 146,492 drug users. "Preliminary investigations revealed the drugs were smuggled in from a neighbouring country through the Perlis border. "Both suspects acted as transporters for a syndicate and are believed to have been involved in trafficking activities since early 2025." Although both suspects tested negative for drug use, background checks showed that one had 17 prior drug and criminal offences, while the other had four. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment with not less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. "Action has also been taken under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988, with two pairs of gold earrings worth RM1,950 seized from the suspects. "This brings the total value of seizures and forfeitures to RM229,013," he said, adding that the suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist investigations. Mat Zani said the success reflects the NCID's ongoing efforts to combat the country's number one enemy — drugs — and its commitment to public safety.

Malaysian rapper detained in Laos for smuggling cannabis
KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police have confirmed that three Malaysians, including a local rap artiste, have been arrested by Laotian authorities for attempting to smuggle 103 packets of cannabis. The trio were detained on May 27 at Wattay International Airport in Laos after arriving from Malaysia on a Thai Airways flight. Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) acting director Deputy Commissioner Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali said investigations were ongoing to determine the origin of the drugs. "We are currently verifying whether the cannabis originated in Malaysia or Thailand," he said.
