World Refugee Day: Telling Their Stories
19 June 2025 While hotspots include Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Palestine, displacement affects every region of the world. In the lead-up to World Refugee Day, Friday, the UN is spotlighting the importance of solidarity with refugees through support, solutions, and the power of storytelling. Zahra Nader: Reporting from exile Ahead of World Refugee Day, UN News spoke with Zahra Nader, a refugee, journalist and women's rights activist from Afghanistan. At age six, Nader and her family fled to Iran after the Taliban first took power, where she was denied access to education and faced racism. Returning to Afghanistan years later, the stark contrast between life in exile and the opportunity to attend school ignited her passion for journalism and advocacy. In August 2021, while she was pursuing a PhD in Canada, the Taliban regained control, shattering her dreams of returning home to teach and conduct fieldwork. ' I felt as a journalist who grew up in Kabul, who became a journalist there, I have a right and responsibility to tell these stories of women in Afghanistan,' she said. 'This is really inhuman, for half of the population of a country to be stripped of their basic human rights because they were born female.' Channeling that pain into action, she founded Zan Times, an Afghan women-led newsroom in exile documenting human rights abuses in Afghanistan, particularly those affecting women. Despite limited funding and growing risks to her reporters, Nader continues her work to ensure that Afghan women are seen and heard. She described the situation in Afghanistan as ' the most severe women's rights crisis of our time ', calling international action insufficient and warning that inaction emboldens the Taliban and its misogynistic ideologies. Despite her trauma and current inability to return, Nader remains optimistic and urges young Afghan women to resist through learning and preparing for a better future. 'I am hopeful, and I want to be also part of that change, to envision a better future for Afghanistan, and do my part to make that future happen.' Barthelemy Mwanza: From survival to leadership On Thursday, UN Video featured the story of Barthelemy Mwanza, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) who is now a youth leader and advocate. At 18, Mwanza was caught between pressure to join an armed tribal group involved in nationwide conflict and his father's plea to stay out of the fight, a decision that could have cost him his life. To survive, he fled to the Tongogara refugee camp in Zimbabwe. Emotionally overwhelmed from being displaced from his home country, 'It really made me cry to say 'Where am I?'' Mwanza said. 'Later on, I was like, 'Till when will I continue to cry? Shouldn't I look at the future?'' He began volunteering with UNHCR, leading more than 5,000 young refugees through initiatives tackling gender-based violence, youth protection, and climate action. Now resettled in Ohio, United States, Mwanza continues to collaborate with UNHCR to elevate refugee voices, inspire climate action and share his story. Empowering and advocating for refugees on a global stage 'was one of my dreams, and now I can really see that it's coming to life,' he concluded.

Brooks Nader Goes Topless as She Teases Her Ex Gleb Savchenko During Bikini Break in Cabo
Brooks Nader appeared to send a bold message to her ex, Gleb Savchenko, as she went topless during a bikini getaway despite local laws prohibiting it. The 28-year-old Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, who recently hinted she might be open to dating women, was spotted baring it all while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas. While public nudity and topless sunbathing are generally against the law in Mexico, there are certain exceptions, such as designated adults-only resorts, according to the Los Cabos Guide. Nader confidently flaunted her jaw-dropping model figure, wearing only a pair of red thong bikini bottoms as she took a dip in the ocean with her boobs all out. Topless Beauty Sending Bold Message The blonde beauty completed her bold beach look with oversized gold hoop earrings and gold-framed aviator sunglasses with orange-tinted lenses. Nader pulled her dirty blonde hair back into a sleek ponytail, highlighting her natural beauty with subtle, complementary makeup. She later slipped into a sheer, flowing red cover-up that matched her bikini bottoms—but left it untied, revealing her bountiful chest. She wasn't vacationing solo either, as a few friends joined her and snapped photos of her lounging poolside. This beach outing comes just weeks after Brooks opened up about her romantic future, revealing she's considering dating women following her breakup with Gleb Savchenko. Brooks also candidly admitted that "all of her exes hate her." The model, who recently made waves in a form-fitting outfit during a night out, shared the personal details at a New York City event. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit alum, previously rumored to be linked to Tom Brady, brought up her former relationship during the launch of the magazine's latest issue, even throwing subtle shade at Gleb following their April split. Brooks also hinted she's already moved on and is thinking about what she wants in a future partner. The two were previously paired on Dancing with the Stars. No More Hangover At the same event, Brooks jokingly called out her sister, Grace Ann Nader, for revealing intimate details about her and Gleb's relationship during a recent podcast appearance they did together earlier in the week. She also came close to an awkward encounter with her ex-husband, Billy Haire, at the same event—just days after officially finalizing their divorce, nearly three years after they initially split. While celebrating her seventh appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue last month, the blonde beauty shared that she's now open to dating women following her recent breakup. She described herself as "freshly single" during an interview with ET, revealing that she's already moved on in the two or three weeks since ending her relationship with the professional dancer. "It's a wrap on that one," she said. "But yeah, no I'm not looking for anything. I'm rocking with work." Nader was previously married to advertising executive Billy Haire for four years before the couple went their separate ways. They tied the knot in 2019, split in 2022, and officially finalized their divorce just a few days ago earlier this week.

N.S. man guilty of 1st-degree murder in shocking 2021 optometry store attack
A Nova Scotia man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the shocking stabbing death of a man inside a downtown Halifax optometry office in 2021. In a decision handed down Thursday, a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge rejected 28-year-old Cymon Felix Cormier's defence that he was not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder (NCRMD). 'The evidence is overwhelming that the accused intentionally, deliberately and after planning (did) commit the murder of Mr. Nader,' Justice Christa M. Brothers wrote in her decision. Tony Nader, 55, was an optometrist at Insight Optometry on Brunswick Street and had previously been in a relationship with Cormier's mother. On Dec. 30, 2021, Nader was working with a customer when Cormier came into the business. 'Without uttering any words to Mr. Nader, Cymon Cormier repeatedly stabbed Mr. Nader with a knife that he had brought with him,' the decision laid out. Story continues below advertisement 'After what can only be described as a frenzied attack, with Mr. Cormier relentlessly pursuing Mr. Nader throughout the optometry clinic, Mr. Cormier left Insight. Video surveillance footage shows him running, jogging and walking, while discarding clothing and other items he had with him.' Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. Sign up for breaking National newsletter Sign Up By providing your email address, you have read and agree to Global News' Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy Brothers said that during Cormier's trial, which began last fall, the court reviewed video surveillance, photographs and 'significant (online) search histories.' As well, the trial heard from medical experts, with the Crown and defence each calling a psychiatrist to the stand. 'Both highly qualified psychiatrists agree that Mr. Cormier was mentally ill, but disagree as to whether his mental illness met the standard set out at s. 16 of the Criminal Code (NCRMD),' Brothers wrote. Dr. Julian Gojer, who had been called by the defence, told the court he thought Cormier had 'delusions of persecution that people were conspiring to kill him and delusions of grandeur that he had special abilities,' the decision read. Cormier had alleged sexual and physical abuse by Nader and his mother. 'Dr. Gojer noted that 'the description of the sexual abuse does not add up and its emergence at the age of 19 years seems to indicate that the delusional thinking began at about that time and he retro-actively applied his beliefs as delusional memories,'' the decision added. Story continues below advertisement Cormier's brother testified he wasn't aware of any sexual abuse. He said that Nader had 'acted as a father figure' to them, 'taking on a parental role,' the decision noted. Evidence brought into trial included search and online histories on Cormier's electronic device. Terms such as 'Tony Nader,' 'Insight Optometry,' and websites on personality disorders and sexual abuse were found. On Dec. 1, 2021, the device searched 'insanity defence.' Brothers said Cormier's explanations for his actions 'become more elaborate over time' and concluded they were 'quite dubious.' 'All demonstrate that the accused had the specific intent for murder, committed the acts as charged and was not incapable of understanding the moral wrongfulness of his act,' the decision read. 'He was not deprived of his volition by any psychosis or delusion. In fact, much of the evidence calls into question his malingering, including his inconsistent reporting, search history, intoxication and amnesia claims.' The first-degree murder conviction comes with an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. Cormier was also found guilty of assault causing bodily harm for hitting a customer at the store with the butt of the knife during the attack. He will be sentenced next month.

CHRB Food Fight? California's Top Horse Racing Regulators Clash After Humboldt County Fair Dates Request Is Denied
Guy Fieri tried, but even the Food Network star of 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' couldn't save horse racing in his small northern California hometown of Ferndale, the site of the Humboldt County Fair since 1896. Racing has been a mainstay of the fair most of the years since, but that is coming to an end in 2025. On Thursday, for the second month in a row, the California Horse Racing Board voted against approval of the Humboldt County Fair's dates request for three consecutive weekends of racing between Aug. 13 and Sept. 1. The regularly scheduled meeting was held in Sacramento at the California Exposition and State Fair Grandstand. Technically, the April vote, 3-2 against granting the dates, meant no action was taken by the board because a majority of four of the seven CHRB seats is required. One commissioner, Damascus Castellanos was absent from the April meeting, and one board seat was open because of the resignation of John Carvelli in February. Thursday's vote was 4-3 against the request, with chairman Dr. Gregory Ferraro and commissioners Dennis Alfieri, Thomas Hudnut and Castellanos voting no. Voting in favor of the Humboldt County Fair dates request was vice chairman Oscar Gonzales, along with commissioners Brenda Davis and Peter Stern. Stern was recently appointed to fill the vacant CHRB seat by California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The vote came after presentations by representatives of the Humboldt County Fair, recognition that a number of local, state and Congressional politicians had written to the CHRB in support of approving a race meet in Ferndale, and pleadings from owners, breeders, trainers and track employees who said a meet would be beneficial to California racing and breeding. One speaker read a letter from the well-known television star Fieri, who annually attends the fair and whose food career was launched as a teenager with a pretzel cart on the fair grounds. In pleading for approval of the dates, Fieri wrote in his letter, 'To put it very bluntly, taking this meet away from Ferndale would be a bullet to the heart of the fair community. There's no other way to say it.' Speaking against the request for dates was Bill Nader, president and CEO of Thoroughbred Owners of California. Nader outlined the disastrous results of the short-lived Golden State Racing meet at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton last year, which the CHRB approved over TOC protests. That meet, Nader said, required a bailout from Southern California interests and caused severe financial losses to the California Authority of Racing Fairs, which had previously operated fair meets throughout Northern California. CARF ended up selling equipment needed to operate a race meet to a track in Wyoming and has refocused its business on helping Northern California fairs operate their off-track betting facilities. "We need to be very careful with how we govern and how we go forward to protect and preserve California racing," Nader told the CHRB commissioners. The denial of the Humboldt County Fair dates mean there will be no Northern California racing this summer. Since Belinda Stronach, owner of Golden Gate Fields, closed the Bay Area track in June 2024, the only racing was the short-lived Golden State meet from mid-October through mid-December. The CHRB last month voted 4-1 against a request by newly formed Bernal Park Racing to conduct a June 10-July 6 meet at the Alameda County Fair. Bernal Park Racing, an entity started by owner-breeders George Schmitt and John Harris, was set to operate the Ferndale meet if the dates had been approved. Schmitt spoke at the meeting and said he and Harris deposited $1.5 million to help fund the Humboldt County Fair meet and had spent over $100,000 so far on fees and other fairs have applied for 2025 dates. After the dates request was voted down, vice chairman Gonzales, who has clashed with chairman Ferraro in past meetings and was particularly critical of him over the Ferndale vote in April, called it a 'serious, serious, serious mistake that this board made." Gonzales asked the CHRB's executive director, Scott Chaney, the logistics of calling for a follow-up meeting to address the request again. "Commissioner Gonzales, how many votes do you want to have on this?' Ferraro asked. 'You've lost twice. Do you not accept the vote?' 'I don't. I don't, Mr. Chairman,' Gonzales responded. 'Well, that's your problem. That's not the problem of the board,' Ferraro answered back. As chairman, Ferraro can veto calls for a special or emergency meeting and said he would do so if Gonzales tried to have one scheduled. Later, during a public comment period, Gonzales irked Ferraro again, complaining about a back-and-forth between Ferraro and a member of the public. 'Are you being particularly rude today," Ferraro asked, "or do you just have a problem?' The meeting was then adjourned. If Fieri was there to serve lunch, a food fight might have broken out between California's top two horse racing regulators.
