Over 400kg of rubbish collected in Teluk Likas beach cleanup
KOTA KINABALU: Over 150 volunteers collected a total of 402kg of rubbish from the shores of Teluk Likas during a beach cleanup campaign here. This initiative united students, scientists, and diplomats in Sabah's fight against marine pollution. The programme was jointly organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES), the French Embassy in Malaysia, and eight secondary schools from Sabah and Labuan. Teluk Likas is the second most frequented beach in Kota Kinabalu after Tanjung Aru, making its cleanliness and conservation a key public concern. Participants included students, UMS staff, NRES officers, and representatives from the Minerals and Geoscience Department, Meteorological Department, and the French diplomatic mission. The schools involved were SMK Elopura (Sandakan), SMK Tandek (Kota Marudu), SMK Sanzac (Kota Kinabalu), SM St. Michael (Penampang), SM Sains Sabah, SMK Pinawantai (Kudat), SMK Labuan, and SMK Tebobon. French Embassy representative Dominique Husken-Ulbrich said the initiative aligns with global environmental efforts. 'This initiative reflects our commitment to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. It shows that educational and diplomatic collaboration can lead to real impact,' she said. NRES deputy secretary-general (Development) Datuk Nor Yahati Awang described the event as a crucial step towards coastal conservation. 'Our beaches are national treasures. Through collective action, we can educate the public about their responsibility in protecting the environment,' she said. UMS marine science programme head Dr Madihah Jaffar Sidek said the cleanup was part of their marine education campaign targeting youth. 'We want students in Sabah to develop a deeper connection with the environment and take ownership as guardians of the marine ecosystem,' she said. The programme was held in conjunction with UMS's Ocean Celebration initiative, which also marked the annual World Oceans Day (8 June), Coral Triangle Day (9 June), and World Sea Turtle Day (16 June).

Nik Nazmi stands firm on Cabinet exit
NATURAL Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (picture) has remained firm on his decision to leave the Cabinet. He even compared his decision with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp who chose to step down even though he held a deep affection for the football club. It was a difficult and necessary decision which was made in full consideration. 'That's exactly how I feel. It wasn't easy to leave NRES. After two years, I consider the team at NRES — including the departments and agencies — to have become a dream team, with exceptional commitment, abilities and integrity. 'But this decision is for a bigger cause. The party's mandate is crucial for broader reforms. I did have the option to stay, but my choice is to resign,' he said on his Facebook page yesterday. On Monday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that he felt hopeful that Nik Nazmi would still continue his duties as minister and said he would give him time and space to reconsider. 'I always wait and give space, (time) to think, and if possible, to continue (his responsibilities). There is still time,' he said, following his acceptance of the resignation of Minister of Economy Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli. Rafizi's resignation became official following the end of his leave on June 16, while Nik Nazmi is scheduled for July 4. Meanwhile, Rafizi, the former PKR deputy president, has announced that he will answer all questions, including claims of planning to start a new political party during an upcoming podcast entitled 'Yang Berhenti Menteri (YBM)' this Friday. He stated on Instagram that he is now free to speak without being constrained by government ethics or confidentiality. 'Insya-Allah (God willing), I will balance the YBM's commentary — there'll be fire, and there'll be clarity. Most importantly, it will be objective, fact-based and provide fair understanding to everyone. 'Too sensitive, not easily persuaded, a minister with no results, planning to form a new party and a formula that's going nowhere (these are among the allegations that will be addressed)…See you this Friday, at 9pm,' he said. — TMR

Nik Nazmi stands firm in stepping down as minister on July 4 despite Anwar's plea
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Adamant on leaving the ministry, despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressing hopes he would stay on, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has confirmed his decision to step down as Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), effective July 4. In a Facebook post yesterday, Nik Nazmi admitted it was not an easy decision to leave the ministry he had led for two years. 'After two years, the team at NRES, including its departments and agencies, has become a dream team with exceptional commitment, ability, and integrity. However, this decision is part of a bigger consideration. The party's mandate is important for broader reforms. 'I did have the option to stay, but my choice is to step down,' he said. Nik Nazmi also shared that Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) chairman Shareen Shariza Abdul Ghani visited him last week while he was packing up his office at the ministry. 'She asked if there was any chance of convincing me to change my mind. I simply smiled and looked around the office. Shareen followed my gaze to the empty shelves that once held books, and the bare walls that used to display pictures, paintings, and jerseys. She understood my decision. 'I told her to take good care of MGTC,' he added. Nik Nazmi said he had visited MGTC several months ago to address concerns raised by staff about the agency's direction. 'In discussions with Shareen, Amin Ramli, and NRES secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Thoo, we agreed on the importance of tackling these issues honestly and openly. 'May MGTC continue to lead the climate change agenda towards our Net Zero 2050 target,' he said. Nik Nazmi also likened his feelings to football manager Jurgen Klopp's resignation from Liverpool, saying, 'Although he loved everything about the club, it was still a decision he needed to make. That is exactly how I feel.' On May 28, Nik Nazmi, who also serves as NRES minister, announced that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Anwar, effective July 4. His announcement followed Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's resignation, effective June 17.

Sea Level Rise 2025 workshop shows Malaysia's commitment to tackling climate change
KUALA TERENGGANU: The hosting of the two-day ASEAN Workshop on Sea Level Rise 2025 is proof of Malaysia's continued commitment to adapting to climate change at the Southeast Asian level. Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) deputy secretary-general (Environmental Sustainability) Datuk Nor Yahati Awang said the workshop, which began today and themed 'ASEAN's Response To Rising Seas: A New Chapter in Climate Adaptation', is one of the initiatives carried out by Malaysia as the Chair of ASEAN 2025. She said the workshop, held in Kuala Nerus, is attended by about 100 participants from various backgrounds, including policymakers, experts, researchers and climate practitioners from ASEAN member countries. 'Malaysia is honoured to host this workshop in conjunction with its ASEAN 2025 Chairmanship. 'This chairmanship is not just a symbolic position, but a regional responsibility in tackling cross-border environmental challenges,' she said in a statement today. Nor Hayati said that as the Chair of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia has also placed environmental sustainability as a crucial foundation for ASEAN's shared future. According to her, ASEAN countries must act together in addressing the threat of rising sea levels, which will impact millions of people in this region. 'This problem is our common challenge... it is also an opportunity for us to jointly build a safer and more resilient ASEAN future. 'Through strong policies, innovative solutions and regional collaboration, we can turn this challenge into a shared strength,' she said. She added that apart from the NRES, the workshop is also a collaboration with Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM), National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). 'The workshop aims to, among others, give a full picture of the scientific mechanisms contributing to rising sea levels, provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced and pioneer the foundation for future research and policy implementation among ASEAN countries,' she said.
