MNRE launches Rs 2.3 crore start-up challenge
New Delhi [India], June 21 (ANI): The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched the Innovative Projects Start-Up Challenge on Rooftop Solar (RTS) and Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Technologies, during the National Conference on Skill Development for the Renewable Energy Workforce at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi. This unique national innovation challenge aims to identify and support breakthrough solutions for India's rooftop solar and distributed energy ecosystem, the statement from the Ministry said. It is being implemented under the aegis of MNRE with support from the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), and in coordination with StartUp India, DPIIT. Further, as per the statement, the Start-Up Challenge seeks applications from innovators and startups in India, focusing on four key categories to boost renewable energy adoption: Affordability - Making rooftop solar affordable for low- and middle-income households using innovative financing, modular systems, and circular economy strategies. Resilience - Enhancing climate resilience, grid stability, and cybersecurity in solar infrastructure, especially for vulnerable and remote areas. Inclusivity - Expanding access to underserved communities through community solar, virtual net metering, and inclusive financing models. Environmental Sustainability - Promoting eco-friendly technologies such as solar panel recycling, land-neutral solar deployment, and hybrid clean energy models. The challenge welcomes a wide range of startups in green tech, IoT, AI, blockchain, construction, energy hardware, fintech, and waste management. The selected innovators will compete for a total prize pool of Rs 2.3 crore, including Rs one crore for 1st Prize, Rs 50 lakh for 2nd Prize, Rs 30 lakh for the third Prize, and 10 Consolation Prizes of Rs five lakh each. Winners will also gain incubation support, pilot implementation opportunities, and mentorship from domain experts and investors, facilitated by MNRE and NISE. The last date for applications is August 20, 2025, and the result will be announced on September 10, 2025. Applications can be submitted through Startup India's website. (ANI)

Socorro ISD earns district certification from National Institute for STEM Education
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Socorro Independent School District said it is the most recent district in the country to earn the National Certificate for STEM Excellence – District (NCSE-D) STEM certificate. Socorro ISD announced the recognition on Tuesday, May 27, in a news release. Socorro ISD said the district is the first in West Texas and one of only three in Texas in the nation to earn the district STEM certification. The certificate, which comes from the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE), recognizes districts for their commitment to continually improving districtwide systems and structures that support STEM educators and their students, Socorro ISD said. 'We are extremely honored to earn the national STEM certification, which validates the hard work and dedication among our faculty, staff and administrators to ensure that our students are receiving meaningful instruction and hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and math,' Socorro ISD Interim Superintendent James Vasquez said. 'Our highly qualified teachers, campus and district leaders are achieving outstanding results integrating STEM instruction across all areas of student learning.' Socorro ISD said NISE, which is headquartered in Houston, Texas, was conceived by seasoned, practicing educators and is based on thousands of hours of research, professional development, curriculum design, and educational leadership. Using an online platform and supported by a dedicated NISE STEM leadership coach, educators and district leaders work together to refine district operations and instruction to further strengthen STEM practices and the district's overall STEM culture, Socorro ISD added. Socorro ISD said that as part of earning the NCSE – District Certification, along with over two years of sustained visioning, planning, and implementing STEM education system, three campuses also earned the NCSE – Campus Certification, and 97 teachers and administrators earned the National Certificate for STEM Teaching (NCST). Escontrias STEAM Academy was the first school in West Texas to earn the National Certificate for STEM Excellence – Campus Certification in July 2023, the district said. The district added that Sierra Vista STEAM Academy earned the certification in August 2024, and Montwood High School earned the certification in January 2025. 'I commend the district academics team and our STEM-certified schools who worked diligently to make this national certification a reality for our students and district,' Vasquez said. 'It demonstrates that SISD is a leader in STEM education dedicated to providing students the knowledge, skills and resources to excel in our competitive, science and technology-based society.' Land scarcity a hurdle in achieving solar energy goals, says Union minister Pralhad Joshi
Gurgaon: Union minister for renewable energy Pralhad Joshi said availability of land has emerged as a major challenge for augmentation of solar energy infrastruture and asked National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) to work on technology that can generate maximum energy in less space. The minister was in the city to inaugurate a testing lab for solar panels at NISE in Gwalpahari on Tuesday. Highlighting exponential growth, the minister said that the country's installed solar energy capacity increased from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 106 GW in 2025, marking a growth of over 3700%. The installed capacity is expected to increase to 300 GW by 2030, he said, outlining the achievement of 50 GW in wind energy capacity. At the inauguration event, Joshi said, "The new lab will set global benchmarks in solar R&D, testing, training, and policy support while marking a bold step towards self-reliance, innovation, and global excellence." Joshi also stated that NISE is now equipped to offer comprehensive testing, calibration, and certification services, particularly for photovoltaic modules and technologies where no established standards currently exist. He termed the lab a pioneering facility for India and further highlighted that as Indian companies scale up the production of large modules, this lab will ensure that products meet the highest quality standards.
