Police use tracking device to help apprehend Hamden carjacking suspects
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police say they used a tracking device to help apprehend three people accused of fleeing from a carjacking in Hamden Thursday night.
Johnny Jones, 20; Malachi Macfarlane, 18; and a 17-year-old boy were all charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, weapon in a motor vehicle, and interfering with police.

Jones- the driver- was also charged with engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, weapon in a motor vehicle and carrying a pistol without a permit.
Police said it was around 9:19 p.m. when they were notified by Hamden police of a carjacking that had just happened. The NHPD Real Time Crime Center then located the vehicle in the area of Goffe Street, by Webster Street.
Officers used spike strips and Star Chase- a GPS tracking device- on the vehicle, which they said ended up crashing into a fence on North Place in West Haven.

The three suspects reportedly tried to run, but were apprehended. A .40 caliber handgun was located in the vehicle during the arrests, police said.
'This is great police work. From Hamden notifying us of a carjacking, then our use of technology to located the vehicle, safely deflate its tires and track it to West Haven where we recovered the suspects and took a gun off the streets,' New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said. 'I can't speak highly enough about how our officers responded.'
Macfarlane and Jones were held on $500,000 and $300,000 bonds respectively and the juvenile was released to his guardian.
