‘You'll be pitched everything, from crypto to your cousin's cafe' –€250m EuroMillions winner warned not to get scammed
The new multi-millionaire, who bought the ticket in Cork, will probably be urged to invest in everything from crypto to a cafe, financial experts said. Today, lottery bosses are expected to reveal the shop where the winning ticket was sold. The winner, who has made themselves known to National Lottery HQ, has been cautioned not to throw their money away on scams or poor investments. Large numbers of lottery winners around the world end up going broke because of scams and bad investments. Financial adviser Colm Power said the winner should avoid high-risk investments. They will need to invest much of the money to stay ahead of inflation and to ensure the money retains its buying power, he said. Be cautious – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is Mr Power, who is managing director of employee benefits and wealth at professional services firm NFP, said: 'Avoid high-risk ventures. You'll be pitched everything: from crypto to your cousin's cafe. Be cautious. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.' Conail Flynn, the executive director of financial advisory firm LHK, said the winner needs to seek out impartial financial advice. 'Be sure to look at all your options and to get impartial investment advice,' Mr Flynn said. 'Be wary of scams. Don't let any exuberance around your Lotto win see you throw caution to the wind and throw your money away on an investment scam or a poor investment.' Mr Flynn said the EuroMillions winner should get a tax adviser, a regulated and independent financial planner or adviser, and a specialist probate solicitor. 'It's important to sit down with the right person to discuss what you should do with your money, especially if you are a young individual whose parents may have passed away and who may not have anyone to guide you,' he said. Financial adviser Glenn Gaughran said the winner should conduct a thorough assessment of potential financial advisers before appointing one. Mr Gaughran, who is head of business development at the Independent Trustee Company, said: 'Before choosing a financial adviser, contact a number of them and compare their fees, qualifications and experience. 'Find out how much the financial adviser will charge, if ongoing advice will be provided and if so, what the cost will be.' He said the winner should also ask what other payments the financial adviser receives: for example, if they are paid commission from the financial services firm they are selling products for. The latest EuroMillions winner will be one of the richest 100 people in the State. The record-breaking win surpasses the €175m record for the largest cheque ever presented to an Irish player, in February 2019.

NFP confirms removal of mayor Mshangane Ndabandaba amid corruption scandal
Nongoma Local Municipality will have a new mayor after NFP decided to recall its corruption-tainted mayor Mshangane Ndabandaba Image: supplied The National Freedom Party (NFP) will finally remove its Nongoma Local Municipality corruption-tainted mayor, Mshangane Ndabandaba. The party's Acting Secretary-General, Sunset Xaba, said contrary to belief that the party was keeping the mayor despite facing serious corruption charges, it was seized with the matter and has taken a decision to remove him. The mayor would have been removed long ago; however, the party caucus in the northern KwaZulu-Natal municipality wrote to the leadership and requested that they delay his removal to allow for a smooth transition, since there are decisions that the caucus still wants to make while the mayor remains in his position. "We have made a decision that Mayor Ndabandaba must go, so we are busy processing his removal from office. We are in discussion with our caucus in the municipality for a smooth transition," said Xaba. Attempts to contact Ndabandaba were unsuccessful. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The mayor was arrested and charged alongside his Deputy Sabelo Nkosi (EFF) and ANC Speaker Babongile Sithole for fraud and corruption concerning a tender that was awarded by the municipality. The trio was arrested in November last year, together with two senior officials and a businessman, who the State alleged was awarded the tender fraudulently to supply services to the municipality, allegedly by the accused. They are all out on bail. The EFF has since fired Nkosi, but the ANC and NFP have kept their members in the positions. Despite having a step-aside rule that stipulates a member must immediately vacate their position after being criminally charged with serious allegations, the ANC has kept Sithole in her position. This has led to the party being accused of being complicit in corruption in the municipality; however, the party recently dismissed that, saying it was still processing the Sithole matter. The three parties are co-governing the rural municipality after no party managed to get enough majority to govern alone. In the 2021 local government elections, the NFP became the second largest party in the municipality after the IFP. When the IFP and the EFF collapsed, the NFP stepped in, working with the ANC and EFF to govern the rural municipality. Meanwhile, the ANC in the province is expected to announce changes in the KwaDukuza Local Municipality, north of Durban. The party is said to have taken a decision to remove its mayor, Ali Ngidi, following an internal probe over his conduct and allegations that have dominated the media since he was appointed in November. ANC provincial spokesperson, Fanle Sibisi, refused to be drawn into discussing the matter except to say, the party's investigation is in the final stages. Attempts to get comment from Ngidi were also unsuccessful.

NFP reshuffles leadership in KwaZulu-Natal and welcomes new members
The National Freedom Party (NFP) has created a political storm in KwaZulu-Natal over party politics and the reshuffling of its members in the KZN Legislature. A keen interest is in the future of NFP provincial chairperson Cynthia Mbali Shinga, who is also the MEC for Social Development. Image: File The National Freedom Party (NFP) has created a political storm in KwaZulu-Natal over party politics and the reshuffling of its members in the KZN Legislature. On Tuesday, Bheki Xaba, acting secretary general of the NFP, sent a communique to provincial chairperson of KZN, Cynthia Mbali Shinga, who is also the MEC for Social Development, mandating her to implement the party directive by amending the KZN legislature list and submitting the revised list electronically to the Office of the Speaker by June 11, 2025, to comply with the party's resolution. Xaba said that in February 2025, the National Executive Committee (NEC) presented to the National Working Committee (NWC) a proposal regarding amendments to the NFP party lists. Following deliberations, the NWC resolved that the party lists should be amended in strategic municipalities as well as for Parliament and the KZN Legislature. He said that in the reserve list, the number one candidate would be the NFP President, Ivan Rowan Barnes. Video Player is loading. Ringgit weakens as US-China trade talks continue in London
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit depreciated against the US dollar today as market attention remained fixed on the second day of United States-China trade discussions in London. At 6 pm, the local note fell to 4.2360/2420 versus the greenback, down from Monday's close of 4.2290/2345. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said across broader markets, foreign exchange volatility is gradually subsiding, and in subdued trading conditions, investors appear to be allocating capital towards currencies offering elevated yields. Meanwhile, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the ringgit continues to maintain its range-bound trade as uncertainties remain. 'The US Dollar Index (DXY) appears to be gaining some strength today, rising by 0.24 per cent to 99.174 points as fear over a slowing economy receded following the nonfarm payrolls (NFP) results last Friday and optimism over trade negotiations between the US and China,' he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9270/9314 from Monday's 2.9344/2.9384 and strengthened versus the British pound to 5.7152/7233 from 5.7392/7466, but fell vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8354/8422 from 4.8316/8379 yesterday. The local currency traded lower against its ASEAN peers. It fell versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2932/2981 from 3.2908/2953 at Monday's close and declined against the Thai baht to 12.9712/9955 from 12.9414/9642. The ringgit slid vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.58/7.60 from 7.57/7.59 yesterday and eased against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.7 from 259.5/260.0 previously.
