Extreme heat watch issued for Southeast Michigan Saturday through Tuesday
An extreme heat watch has been issued for all of Southeast Michigan Saturday morning through Tuesday evening. Expect high temperatures well into the 90s and heat index temperatures at or above 100 degrees during daytime hours. Nights will be warm and muggy as overnight lows are expected to remain in the mid-70s through the stretch. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit There may be showers to contend with on Saturday morning, but southwest winds gusting to around 25 to 30 mph will help clear out the clouds and usher in warm, moist air with afternoon temperatures reaching into the low 90s. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit Near-record, or record-breaking, temperatures on Sunday and Monday will reach into the mid to upper 90s with little chance of cloud cover to provide relief. High temperature in mid-80s in Philadelphia for first day of summer; heat wave starts this weekend
What a difference a day makes! Friday marks the start of summer and the Philadelphia region's weather will be at its nicest and most comfortable of the next 9 to 10 days. Expect sunny skies, low humidity, and seasonable temperatures in the mid-80s. Our target temperature for Philadelphia is 85 degrees. All of that said, these conditions change Saturday as we start a major heat wave that will last at least through next Thursday. Temperatures will be in the 90s for the weekend, then dangerous heat moves in Monday through Wednesday. We have a NEXT Weather Alert for those days. Actual temperatures could be very close to 100 degrees or top 100 for the first time since 2012. Plus, the feels-like temperature is going to be between 105 and 110. An extreme heat watch has already been issued for the I-95 corridor and all of Southeastern Pennsylvania. That will turn into an Extreme heat warning over the weekend. The entire area will wind up under some sort of heat warning for Monday through Wednesday. Now is a great time to make sure you have a working air conditioner and a heat plan. Severe weather expected to hit Philadelphia region on Thursday. Here's the timing and weather forecast.
The heat is on! Summer arrives Friday, but we are feeling it here in the Philadelphia area Thursday and the next seven days. On Thursday, you need to hydrate often with non-alcoholic and non-sugary beverages. Make sure to dress in loose-fitting clothes and spend time in air conditioning if possible. Skies will be partly cloudy, and highs will hover in the low 90s with a heat index near 100. On Thursday afternoon, storms will develop, some of which are likely to be severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed our entire area in a slight risk (level 2 of 5) of severe weather. Damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning and downpours are the main threats. CBS News Philadelphia Due to the likelihood of severe storms, a NEXT Weather Alert is in place Thursday afternoon and evening from 3 to 9 p.m. Ironically, Friday, the summer solstice and official start to summer, will hover in the mid-80s with sunny skies and will be the nicest day of the next seven days. Our first heatwave of the year arrives Saturday through the middle of next week. As a reminder, three consecutive days at or above 90 is considered a heat wave. CBS News Philadelphia Skies will be partly sunny to sunny with each day hotter and more humid than the day before. By Sunday, we are looking at dangerous heat with highs in the mid 90s and overnight lows near 80. Monday and Tuesday climb between 97 and 101 with a heat index, feels-like temperature between 103 and 107. At those temperatures, heatstroke and heat exhaustion are possible. For some context: Last year's first heat wave ran from June 18-23, and the last one hit at the end of July. Both topped out at 98 degrees. Our last 100+ degree day? July 7, 2012, when we hit 101. And the longest heatwave on record? A whopping 12 days back in 1901, including two scorchers over 100. Because of the dangerous heat, a NEXT Weather Alert is in place from Monday to Wednesday. Severe storms possible in Southeast Michigan Wednesday. Here's what to expect.
A new area of low pressure and a front will move into Southeast Michigan on Wednesday. Storms are likely to be strong to severe along and ahead of the front. The CBS Detroit NEXT Weather Team has declared Wednesday a NEXT Weather Alert Day. Most of Southeast Michigan is rated 2 out of 5 on the severe risk scale by the Storm Prediction Center. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit Storms will move in by 3 p.m. on Wednesday and will stick around into the night. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit Most of the stronger storms will move in late afternoon Wednesday and into the evening. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit Some lingering rain will be around on Thursday for Juneteenth. The main threats will be strong, damaging winds at 60 miles per hour or higher, as well as one-inch hail. We can't rule out the chance for a couple of storms to rotate. This could lead to a tornado or two through the evening hours on Wednesday. There will be lots of warm, humid air ahead of the system. Feels like temperatures will be in the mid-90s for Tuesday and Wednesday before the storms. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit The heat and humidity will act as fuel for storms ahead of a front. It will feel like the triple digits by the weekend with actual highs in the low 90s.

South Florida in for a hot and humid week, with "feels like" temps in the upper 90s
South Florida is in for another hot and humid week with a low chance of rain. Monday got off to a warm and muggy start with temperatures in the low to mid 80s. A few stray showers moved across the area. The chance of rain is low for the day, only about 10%, and any showers that develop will likely occur in the morning along the coast and then push inland and to the west by the afternoon. Highs will soar to around 90 degrees in the afternoon under mostly sunny skies and it will feel like the mid to upper 90s when you factor in the humidity. There is a moderate risk of rip currents along the Atlantic beaches and the UV index is extreme. There are no alerts or advisories for boaters along the Atlantic or Florida Keys waters. Low chances of rain for the week. NEXT Weather High pressure remains in control and the chance of rain stays low at only 10% for Tuesday. Isolated showers will be possible in the morning and then the wet weather will be steered to our west with the onshore breeze. Highs will stay seasonably hot, around 90 degrees, in the afternoon. Mid to late week the chance of rain rises only slightly with the potential for spotty showers. Highs will climb to 90 degrees. Some Saharan dust may return to South Florida later in the week. The tropics remain quiet for now and tropical systems are not expected over the next 7 days.
