Rock singer calls brother's claims he sexually abused him ‘wildly misleading'

Bear Rinehart, lead singer of the rock band NEEDTOBREATHE, has responded to sex abuse allegations made by his brother and former bandmate, Bo. After Bo accused his brother of sexually abusing him when they were children, Bear shared his side of the story on social media. 'My brother and I were both sexually abused at the age of 8 and 6 by a teenage counselor at the Christian camp where we grew up,' Bear wrote in an Instagram post on Saturday, June 14. 'Neither of us received support for these events until well into adulthood and were both left to navigate the rest of childhood and adolescence with deep pain and confusion.' The singer went on to say his brother's accusations 'conflates our shared experience of abuse with a childhood incident he misrepresents.' 'To now label me as an abuser in such a heartless way is not only deeply painful, but it is also wildly misleading and feels intentionally harmful,' Bear said after explaining how he and Bo went through therapy together to address the abuse. 'While going through a two day intensive counseling session with Bo five years ago, I learned that he was hurt by things that happened in our early teen years as well,' Bear wrote. 'At that counseling session I took full responsibility for any part I played in that pain. We processed those moments of shared trauma in detail and left with an understanding that we were two young boys trying to cope with the unimaginable.' Last Thursday, Bo shared a statement on social media alleging that he was sexually abused by multiple people during his childhood, including his brother Bear. 'This is Bo. I am an alcoholic. I am a sinner, but I am a believer. I believe in God's grace, and I believe that his mercy has shown that he is consistent, even though we don't deserve it,' Bo wrote on Instagram. 'I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I've been sexually abused by a Camp counselor. I've been sexually, physically and emotionally abused by my brother. And I've been abused by my youth pastor. 'I believe that God has bigger plans for me and part of those plans are telling my story because it's so hard for anyone to tell stories like these. Even when my faith has been crushed, I know that God still has provisions for me,' he continued. 'If you're out there and you're thinking, nothing can be done, no one can help, there's no way out… I'm with you… but I believe in a God who always finds a way. Don't give up and don't lose hope.' Despite all this, Bear said that he is 'still hopeful for a reconciliation some day with my brother.' NEEDTOBREATHE was formed by the Rinehart brothers in South Carolina. The band released its debut album, 'The Feature,' in 2001. NEEDTOBREATHE has since released nine more albums, six of which have topped the Christian Albums chart. The band has also charted multiple singles on several charts including including 'Washed by the Water' (No. 1 on the Hot Christian Songs chart), 'Brother' with Gavin DeGraw (No. 98 the Hot 100), and 'Who Am I' (No. 14 on the Hot Alternative Songs chart). NEEDTOBREATHE received a Grammy Award nomination for their song 'Multiplied' in 2015. Bo left the group in 2020. Bear Rinehart denies Bo Rinehart's abuse allegations in emotional response

NEEDTOBREATHE frontman Bear Rinehart has responded to serious allegations of childhood sexual abuse made by his brother and former bandmate, Bo Rinehart. In a June 12 Instagram post, Bo accused multiple individuals, including Bear, of sexually, physically, and emotionally abusing him during his childhood. On June 14, Bear addressed the claims via the Instagram account of his solo project, Wilder Woods. "I feel the need to comment on the deeply hurtful and misleading accusations that my brother Bo made," Bear wrote. He denied being an abuser and expressed concern for his family, stating, 'As a father and husband, I must protect my family from claims that misrepresent the truth.' Bear revealed that both he and Bo were sexually abused at a Christian camp as children by a teenage counselor. He said they never received proper support until adulthood, which led to lasting trauma. Bear acknowledged a difficult counseling session five years ago, where he took responsibility for causing any pain during their adolescence but denied being an abuser. 'To now label me an abuser in such a heartless way is not only deeply painful, but also wildly misleading,' Bear wrote. He emphasized his love for Bo and hopes for eventual healing and reconciliation. The allegations come years after Bo's departure from NEEDTOBREATHE in 2020. He has spoken publicly about his abuse history since then.

In the statement, Bo wrote that he is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, claiming he was abused by a camp counselor, a youth pastor, and his brother. While he did not directly name Bear in the initial post, he later shared a photo of Bear to his Instagram Story with the caption "sexual abuser." The story has since been deleted. "This is Bo I am an alcoholic I am a sinner, but I am a believer I believe in God's grace, and I believe that his mercy has shown that he is consistent, even though we don't deserve it. In 2023, he discussed his healing journey in an interview with PEOPLE. 'It takes time,' Bo told PEOPLE. 'At some point in our lives, we get to this stage — and it's generally with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, it's in their late 30s or early 40s — where it starts to surface whether you want it to or not. You'll start to see how your life's kind of breaking down.' Bo and Bear Rinehart co-founded NEEDTOBREATHE in the early 2000s. Bo left the band in 2020. As of now, Bear Rinehart has not publicly responded to the allegations.

Gulf Coast Jam officials optimistic amid weather delays

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) — Organizers of Gulf Coast Jam have been forced to delay opening festivities and cancel some performances Thursday due to inclement weather sweeping across the Florida Panhandle. In an early morning statement, event officials announced that gates, parking, and will call operations would remain closed until further notice after consulting with city officials and the National Weather Service. 'After meeting with City officials and the National Weather Service, we are at a standstill due to the concerns for our patrons, staff, and artists,' the statement read. 'Will call will NOT open until further notice, stay glued to our social media for updates. Parking and gates will also remain closed until further notice.' Festivalgoers, known as 'Jammers,' are urged to remain safe and check social media for updates as organizers monitor the storm system closely. Later in the morning, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Gulf Coast Jam officials issued a follow-up update expressing their hope to still open gates later in the day, but also confirmed the cancellation of Thursday night's scheduled performances by NEEDTOBREATHE, Restless Road, Angie K, and Jason Byrd. 'Our team is working hard to open Gulf Coast Jam and bring you some amazing music tonight,' the statement read. 'Another round of heavy storms are headed this way. Sadly we have to cancel NEEDTOBREATHE, Restless Road, Angie K, and Jason Byrd tonight.' Despite the weather setbacks, organizers said they remain hopeful that the event can resume later today. 'We will have more information after this afternoon's storm, but the plan as of 9:30 AM is to open gates in the early evening and to give you a great time. This is subject to changes in the weather and keeping our guests, crew, and artists safe,' the statement concluded. Organizers are expected to provide further updates throughout the day as the weather situation develops. Attendees are strongly encouraged to monitor Gulf Coast Jam's official social media channels and for the latest announcements. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
