Blue Jays Make Myles Straw Announcement After Leaving Diamondbacks Game
Blue Jays Make Myles Straw Announcement After Leaving Diamondbacks Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Myles Straw has been exactly what he's supposed to be this season: a reliable defender and serviceable contact hitter. The 2022 Gold Glove Award winner came into Tuesday's matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks slashing .264/.294/.339 with one homer and 14 RBI over 58 games, and he had yet to record an error in the field. Advertisement Fellow outfielder Jonatan Clase started in center on Tuesday, with Straw on the bench. However, Clase got drilled in the knee by Brandon Pfaadt's pitch in the fourth inning, and Straw came in to replace his teammate. However, the veteran also hurt his right leg when he ran into the center field wall tracking down former Cleveland Guardians teammate Josh Naylor's fly ball, causing him to leave the game. Toronto later released a status update on him via its social media. Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Myles Straw (3)© John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images "UPDATE: OF Myles Straw was removed from tonight's game with a right ankle sprain," it said. Straw was replaced by rookie outfielder Alan Roden. The latter player came into the game slashing .193/.267/.273 with one homer and eight RBI over 37 contests. Fellow outfielder Davis Schneider pinch-hit for Roden in the seventh and flied out to center. Neither Straw nor Roden had an at-bat. Advertisement Toronto's outfield depth will be tested depending on the severity of these injuries. Schneider came into the game slashing just .171/.356/.257 with one homer and two RBI over 17 games. Meanwhile, fellow outfielders Anthony Santander (shoulder), Daulton Varsho (hamstring), and Nathan Lukes (concussion) are all on the injured list. One chaotic Blue Jays win: 4 centre fielders, 2 clutch homers and 1 display of lasting friendship
TORONTO — On Monday, Myles Straw went to Josh Naylor's baby shower. On Tuesday night, Naylor showed up for Straw, too. Long before Addison Barger launched a walk-off homer to lift the Blue Jays to a 5-4 win, Straw went crashing into the outfield wall, twisting his ankle on the warning track. Naylor saw Straw lying on the turf as he pulled into second base, putting both hands on his helmet in shock before checking with the umpire and stepping off the bag. Advertisement As the game halted — the latest pause in a chaotic contest filled with injuries, four center fielders, balks, hit batters and a walk-off homer — the Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman began a long jog out to deep centre field, joining a huddled group of Blue Jays players and staff. It was a rare moment when the two sides of the game dissolved. Straw ultimately left the contest with a right ankle sprain, five innings before Barger ended things with a pulled fly ball to left, snapping Toronto's three-game losing streak with another comeback victory. But Naylor's long jog was a sign of friendship amid the chaos. 'We got really close over our years in Cleveland, and I'm very thankful for the relationship we have,' Naylor said. 'I hated to see him go down. He's like a brother to me, so I just wanted to make sure he's all right.' It was the first time Blue Jays manager John Schneider had seen a batter run to the outfield to check on an injured opponent. Naylor would only do it for a close friend, he said. Even though the pair's wives and families grew close in Cleveland, Naylor was the last person Straw expected to see as he lay staring at the Rogers Centre's closed roof. 'I'm not doing that for anybody,' Straw said. 'My brother could be out there and I wouldn't run out there for him. So it just shows the kind of guy he is.' Blue Jays CF Myles Straw leaves the game after banging into the wall. Josh Naylor and Andres Giménez go all the way out there to check on him. They were all teammates in Cleveland. — Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) June 18, 2025 Straw was already Toronto's second centre fielder of the game after Jonatan Clase left the contest with a right knee contusion in the fourth. The young outfielder attempted to leap out of the way of a Brandon Pfaadt fastball, crashing to the ground after the pitch struck his leg. The Blue Jays ended up using four centre fielders in the contest, moving from Clase to Straw to Alan Roden to Will Robertson. Advertisement 'It was just kind of a mess,' Barger said. 'It's unfortunate we had a couple guys get hurt, but just trying to grind it out.' Clase should be OK, Schneider said. The Jays will continue to monitor Straw, but the outfielder doesn't expect a long-term absence, he said after the game. Toronto's endless centre field rotation was just one part of the haywire contest. Arizona's Eugenio Suárez was hit by two deliveries, and there were five total hit-by-pitches in the game. Former Toronto prospect and Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno was scratched moments before first pitch with right-hand soreness. Brendon Little balked in the seventh. Then, with Straw watching from the Blue Jays' training room, Bo Bichette and Barger launched consecutive homers in the final inning to pull Toronto from a loss to a walk-off win. 'It was sick,' Straw said. 'The whole training room was hype. It was kind of cool to see how they celebrate in there.' Straw and Naylor were cheering for the same homers just two years earlier. They were part of a Guardians group that got close, Straw said, hanging out off the field and making playoff runs in 2020 and 2022. When Naylor launched a long ball off Gerrit Cole in the 2022 ALDS and rocked a theoretical baby while rounding the bases, Straw met him in the dugout with a gargantuan grin. On Tuesday in Toronto, only Straw could celebrate the game-turning home runs. Only one of them could be on the winning side of the tumultuous game, but an enduring friendship superseded it all. 'He's a great dude,' Straw said. 'He's one of my best friends in the game. And, I mean, that's just who he is. He's a lover. He truly cares about everyone.' The Blue Jays announced a slew of injury updates before Tuesday's contest. Headlining the news was Max Scherzer (thumb inflammation), who will make a second Triple-A rehab start on Wednesday. He's expected to throw 70 to 75 pitches and could return to the Toronto rotation if the outing goes well. … Starting pitcher Bowden Francis was placed on the injured list ahead of the game with a right shoulder impingement. The issue had been lingering for Francis' last two or three starts, Schneider said. … The Jays also designated reliever Erik Swanson for assignment, promoting pitchers Paxton Schultz and Justin Bruihl to the 26-man roster. Blue Jays lose outfielders Clase and Straw to injury in 2 innings against Diamondbacks

(AP Photo/Laurence Kesterson) TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays lost center fielders Jonatan Clase and Myles Straw due to injuries within two innings Tuesday night against Arizona. Clase, who started in center, exited after being hit on the right knee by a pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Straw, his replacement, departed after crashing into the wall and spraining his right ankle while chasing down a double in the top of the fifth. Clase went down in pain after he was hit by a 93 mph sinker from Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Clase stayed in to run the bases, but the inning ended when the next batter, Bo Bichette, flied out. The Blue Jays said Clase left because of a bruised right knee. Four batters into the next inning, Straw slammed into the wall and went down while trying to catch Josh Naylor's RBI double. Naylor put his hands on his head as he looked out at Straw, his former Cleveland teammate, lying prone on the field. The Arizona slugger then walked all the way out to the wall to check on Straw. Naylor and Straw were teammates for parts of four seasons in Cleveland and became good friends in that time. 'He's a fierce competitor, incredible athlete,' Naylor said. 'He's a dear friend of mine and I just wanted to make sure he was OK. We got really close over our years in Cleveland and I'm very thankful for the relationship we have. I hated to see him go down. He's like a brother to me, so I just wanted to make sure he's all right." Straw eventually got to his feet and walked off the field through an outfield gate. He was replaced by rookie Alan Roden. Straw called Naylor 'one of my best friends in the game," adding that he doesn't expect to be sidelined too long. 'That's just who he is,' Straw said of Naylor. "He's a lover. He truly cares about everyone.' Toronto rallied for a 5-4 victory. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press
