'Statistically, he's not': Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett is not better than Pittsburgh Steelers LB T.J. Watt
(Image via Getty: T.J. Watt) Myles Garrett is one of the highest-paid defensive ends in NFL history. Mike Moraitis of The Sporting News said on June 20, 'T.J. Watt is looking for Myles Garrett money in contract extension. ' Now, if T.J. Watt's contract extension talks at the Pittsburgh Steelers are revolving around Myles Garrett's kind of money, there's bound to be some comparison between the two players. And it's bound to reach the Pittsburgh Morning Radio Show on 93.7 The Fan! And it did! The host of the Fan Morning Show, Adam Crowley, chimed in by saying Myles Garrett may be a first-ballot Hall of Fame guy, but he's not better than T.J. Watt statistically. A former Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback who joins them (93.7 Radio Talk Show hosts Dorin Dickerson and Adam Crowley) every Thursday, Pat Bostick, too shared his views. Bostick said the two(T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett) can't be compared because they play different games. Let's hear their plights, shall we? Myles Garrett is a better athlete, but he's not statistically better than T.J. Watt, says 93.7 The Fan Radio Talk Show host Adam Crowley 93.7 The Fan Live Stream Host of the Fan Morning Show at 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh, Adam Crowley said, 'Edge rushers, this floored me on this ESPN quarter-century team. DeMarcus Ware - good player, great player. Jared Allen - great player. Julius Peppers - great player. Myles Garrett's on the list. I mean, seriously. I'm not saying Myles Garrett isn't a great player. He is. He's a first-ballot Hall of Fame guy. Every single statistic, he trails T. J. Watt. Why does it seem like the National Consensus likes Garrett more than Watt? Because I do think that is the consensus. I think most average NFL fans, by the way the National Media talks about Garrett, they think he's a better player than T.J. Watt. Statistically, he's not. He's a better athlete. He got drafted No. 1 overall because of it. He was a phenom in college. Like, is that what it is?' Former Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Pat Bostick says Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt play different positions, even though they are both called edges now Pat Bostick, former Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback, joined the hosts of 93.7 The Fan on June 19. Bostick shared, 'I think edges come in different packages. He's a nine technique in a 4-3 defense. T.J. Watt, for the majority of his career, is a standup outside linebacker. They're both edges now. Everyone wants to call them edges now. His opportunities are quite frankly different than Myles Garrett's. I think he's got more designed one-on-ones because of how they play schematically. I think Garrett and Watt play different positions, and they're being compared in an edge category that's melding them two together. I don't think that's necessarily fair to either one of them.' The crew of the 93.7 The Fan Radio Talk Show was later joined by Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports and they asked her about the Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt issue. She sided with T.J. Watt. What did she say? T.J. Watt is not petty and not trying to land more than Myles Garrett, discloses American Sports Reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala Aditi Kinkhabwala said, 'I got asked that, too. Oh, is T.J. Watt's whole contract situation being held up by Myles Garrett? And my response to that is T.J. Watt is not that petty. This is not about - oh, I need one more penny than Myles Garrett.' Ian Rapoport, NFL Insider, also said, 'You know if they possibly can, they're going to try and not make him(T.J. Watt) the highest-paid edge-rusher in the NFL.' But how much does T.J. Watt want? As much as Myles Garrett? Then, how much does Myles Garrett make? Myles Garrett earns $40 million a year -his contract is for four years and $160 million. But who started all this Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt comparison to even begin with? It was Adam Schefter, NFL Insider, who shared on ESPN's Unsportsmanlike on Tuesday that Trey Hendrickson and T.J. Watt would be in the Maxx Crosby, Myles Garrett range - 'somewhere in there.' Browns' Shedeur Sanders Should Learn From Myles Garrett's Speeding Accident
Browns' Shedeur Sanders Should Learn From Myles Garrett's Speeding Accident originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Many teams passed on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft because of how he has acted in the past, but the Cleveland Browns decided to take a chance on him. Advertisement And he is not off to the best start that he could be in first year in the league. The rookie quarterback was cited on Tuesday morning for driving 101 miles per hour in a 60 zone on I-71 in Strongsville, Ohio. This could remind Browns fans of one of their star players a few years ago. Defensive superstar Myles Garrett was driving with a passenger back in 2022 when he lost control and flipped the car three times. If he had not had his seatbelt on, he could have sustained much more serious injuries than he did, or worse. This accident came about because Garrett was speeding, which is the seventh time he was cited for driving over the speed limit. He has not been in trouble behind the wheel since then, so Sanders could learn a thing or two from his teammate. Advertisement Sanders has a great opportunity in Cleveland with how uncertain the quarterback situation is. The team has five on the roster, but none of them are the solidified starter. Many think he should at least be the team's QB2 going into the 205 season. If he can learn from his mistakes and slow down on the roads, he could have a very good chance of becoming the Browns' starting quarterback in his rookie season. Insider Reveals Key to Potential T.J. Watt Extension
Insider Reveals Key to Potential T.J. Watt Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It is hard to imagine the Pittsburgh Steelers without edge rusher T.J. Watt. He's entrenched himself in this city, woven into its DNA as a stalwart along the edge. He'll go into the Ring of Honor in short order and the Hall of Fame as a Steeler. Advertisement But every unforeseen move is unimaginable until it happens, and until Watt signs the extension he's looking for, it remains possible that he will play somewhere other than Pittsburgh. The Steelers waited too long to give Watt his new deal, and in the meantime, Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett reset the market with a $160 million deal. Of that gargantuan mark, $123.6 million is guaranteed. Subsequently, it's no surprise that insider James Palmer revealed the key to the Steelers extending Watt is a matter of guaranteed money. "He's had some injuries," Palmer said for Bleacher Report. "He's battled through them. He's going to be 31 years old. Do you give $100 million guaranteed to somebody like that? I think that's where this battle's going to happen, but I think a deal is going to end up happening." Advertisement The optimism is welcome wording for a fanbase paranoid about losing its star. However, Pittsburgh's hesitancy is understandable. Watt is on the wrong side of 30 and didn't produce like an elite edge rusher in 2024. That isn't necessarily a sign of some steep decline, and Watt's run defense should keep him viable deep into his next contract. But when that contract is bound to approach (if not surpass) $40 million annually, with significant guaranteed money, there's a real chance the contract becomes a bad one rather quickly. "The issue with this is a big swing with Aaron Rodgers,' Palmer said. 'They know how important the defense is gonna be, they know they need T.J. Watt, and a deal is likely going to get done. But the Steelers' argument is this: That Watt and the defense kind of fell off a little bit the back end of last year." If Watt's decline has already arrived, the Steelers – who are still favored to extend him – are in trouble. They'll bank on his pedigree and track record of production when they eventually take that leap of faith. Finding the courage to bite that bullet, for the sake of keeping an icon around, is taking longer than anticipated. Even so, fans should remain confident in a deal getting done. Browns Star Cracks Top 5 of NFL's 100 Best Players
Browns Star Cracks Top 5 of NFL's 100 Best Players originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After demanding a trade earlier this offseason, Cleveland Browns superstar pass rusher Myles Garrett backed off his demand and signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension to remain in Cleveland. Advertisement And the Browns are happy he stayed. Garrett just showed up on CBS Sports' top 100 players in the NFL list as the second-best player in the league. He has been a staple near the top of those rankings, appearing at No. 2 last season as well, and 2025 is no exception. 2. Myles Garrett - Cleveland Browns DE "Garrett had 14 sacks to finish second in the league, but his impact was much more obvious than that number. He is an elite game-wrecker as he turns 30 this year. (Last season: No. 2)." The Browns fully expect Garrett to continue the Hall of Fame trajectory that his career has been on over the past eight seasons. Advertisement Browns' defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz thinks that will surely happen and has high hopes for a great season from Garrett. "I really think Myles is going to have the best season of his career. And has to right?" Schwartz said with a laugh. "I've told him before, what's that Spider-Man quote, 'with great power comes great responsibility.' With the big contract, with the notoriety that came along with that, with the process that took to get him to that point, there also comes. "There's always pressure in this league, but probably a little bit more so. But I think that brings out the best in players, and I know that will be the case with Myles also." Ben Roethlisberger Offers T.J. Watt Update
Ben Roethlisberger Offers T.J. Watt Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As a franchise steeped in continuity, there's an uneasy feeling whenever a Pittsburgh Steelers stalwart puts that status in doubt. Advertisement Ahead of the 2024 season, it was defensive tackle Cameron Heyward's turn to test the waters. Coming off an injury-plagued season, Heyward was in search of a new deal that ensured he'd be paid handsomely to spend the twilight of his career in Western Pennsylvania. At first, the Steelers didn't budge. Ultimately, a deal got done, and Heyward put forth an incredible bounce-back season, logging eight sacks on the way to All-Pro honors. A year later, edge rusher T.J. Watt is due for an extension. Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett's recent four-year, $160 million deal has raised the stakes, and Watt is holding out in hopes of approaching (if not surpassing) that number. Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger gave an update on Watt's contract negotiations now that he held himself out of minicamp. Advertisement "It's interesting because this is now a mandatory minicamp," Roethlisberger said. "So he can be fined. It'll be interesting to see if the Steelers decide to fine him or not because they don't have to ... Last time this happened was four years ago when T.J. was looking for a new contract. The difference is, he's holding out, which means he is not there. Last time, he held in, which means, 'I'm going to come, I'll be here, but I'm not participating.'" Like Heyward, Watt is coming to the table after an underwhelming year with some level of concerns attached to his age. Heyward, well into his 30s with two sacks in 2023, managed to come to an agreement. Watt still posted 11.5 sacks in 2024 and is only entering his age-31 season. Watt would like to be the highest-paid defensive player in football. Pittsburgh, presumably on the hook for ~$20 million more than it anticipated entering the offseason, is understandably taking its time. "This year, he's not there," Roethlisberger said. "You asked the question of what's the difference? I don't know, only T.J. knows the difference. My only speculation and guess is like, they must not be close. If you were close, I would think that T.J. would do what he did last time." Advertisement For now, the two seem far apart. But the Steelers are incentivized to keep Watt around, and his run defense should keep him among the best edge rushers in the sport, even if his pass-rushing decline proves to be more than a blip on the radar. Until then, the Pittsburgh faithful will continue to hold their breath, hoping that gap is addressed before his absence becomes meaningful.
