Jammu: Omar reviews delivery of essential services
Chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting at the civil secretariat here to review the delivery of essential services and supplies and the steps taken by the administration during the current summer season in Jammu division. During the meeting, Jammu divisional commissioner Ramesh Kumar briefed the CM and gave presentation on the functioning of different departments and their action plan for summer preparedness. It was informed that JPDCL has maintained sufficient buffer stock of transformers and also devised time-slots for power curtailment to prevent overload on grid stations. The functioning of Jal Shakti and Jammu municipal corporation was also discussed with regard to adequate supply of water tankers, water sprinklers, anti smog guns and proper maintenance of water coolers to provide relief to the citizens. Taking cognisance of the water scarcity issues in some newly populated areas, the CM directed Jammu MC commissioner and Jal Shakti department to provide relief to the residents immediately. He further directed for expediting the pace of work on water supply schemes nearing completion to alleviate such issues. The CM further reviewed the forest fire response mechanism and readiness of fire & emergency services to tackle any such situation. The CM was also apprised of preparedness of irrigation and flood control with regard to de-silting of irrigation canals and flood mitigation plan. Omar also took stock of the broad arrangements put in place for forthcoming Muharram and Amarnath Yatra. The divisional commissioner apprised the CM about the routes decided for Muharram along with other elaborate arrangements pertaining to power, water supply, health and other essential services for the people participating in Muharram processions across the division. He also apprised the CM on the ongoing preparations for Amarnath Yatra with detailed arrangements right from Lakhanpur- the gateway to Jammu Kashmir- to Lambar in Banihal, Ramban.

Omar Abdullah lauds Vande Bharat train experience, says will consider
Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 19 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the Vande Bharat Express after travelling on the newly launched Katra-Srinagar route on Thursday, calling the high-speed train the 'best way' to commute between Srinagar and Jammu. The CM said he would soon speak to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about increasing the frequency or capacity of the train to meet high demand on the route. 'The journey was very good. The train is excellent, and these days, if you have to come quickly from Srinagar to Jammu or vice versa, there is no better way than this. Secondly, it will definitely impact tourism. The demand is so much that as per what I am hearing, it has become very difficult to get tickets in this train for the next 1 month,' Omar Abdullah said. 'After speaking to Railway Minister Ashwini ji, we will see if we can increase the frequency of this train or the carriages in this train, because the demand is very high. Now, to meet the demand, we will have to take some steps immediately,' he added. CM Abdullah also reviewed preparations for the Amarnath Yatra and upcoming Muharram, assuring that the administration is fully geared up. 'Today, I reviewed the situation in Jammu regarding the summers. I especially asked about the arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra and Muharram. All the preparations have been done from our side. Now we are waiting for the pilgrims and hope that their Yatra is comfortable.' Addressing the recent Air India plane crash, Abdullah urged restraint and patience while investigations are ongoing. 'Accountability will be fixed. Who said accountability will not be fixed? Right now, we do not know how the plane crashed. We should wait. Both the black boxes have been found. An inquiry has been set up...' The Chief Minister also welcomed the return of tourists to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Kashmir Valley and Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. 'I want to thank all the tourists who have started coming back to Jammu and Kashmir and especially Kashmir. Similarly, the number of pilgrims who stopped visiting Mata Vaishno Devi immediately after Pahalgam has also increased. Similarly, the trend of tourism is increasing in Kashmir...,' he said. The Vande Bharat Express operating on the newly launched Katra-Srinagar route is witnessing overwhelming demand from passengers, with bookings full for the next 10 days, according to railway authorities. Earlier last week, National Conference Chief Farooq Abdullah travelled in the Vande Bharat train and paid obeisance at the Maa Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. Farooq Abdullah said that he had a 'good darshan' at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and that he prayed for prosperity and brotherhood in the region. (ANI)

War on women
Another Muharram approaches. Once again, we will gather and mourn wearing black while remembering a tyrant's violence and a family's sacrifice. But let this not be another year where we ritualistically grieve Karbala and then return to silencing our women. Let this not be another Muharram where we cry over Yazid's cruelty while enabling our own. Because if not for a woman, Islam wouldn't have survived. Not the Quran you recite. Not the Hadith you forwarded. Not the faith you gatekeep while violating every principle it upholds. Islam would never have made it past its earliest trials, political boycotts, economic starvation and rebellions, if it weren't carried on the backs, in the arms, and through the voices of women. Before Islam had a following, it had Bibi Khadijah (RA), not just a supporter, but the first believer. A businesswoman. A strategist. A financier. The one who bankrolled the mission of the Prophet (PBUH) when no man dared. When Quraysh exiled him, it was her caravan, her gold, her unwavering faith that sheltered him. It was Bibi Fatima (AS) who bore the lineage through which the Ahlul Bayt lived on. The axis of legacy. The embodiment of strength in grief. It was Aisha (RA) who brilliantly narrated over 2,000 hadith and debated scholars. Her voice helped shape the jurisprudence we now cite while refusing to let women speak in the same rooms. And then came Bibi Zainab (AS), shattered, shackled, but unafraid. After Karbala had become a graveyard and her brother Imam Hussain (AS) lay slaughtered in the sand, it was she who rose, not with weapons, but with words. Dragged to the court of Yazid, surrounded by mockery, she did not ask for mercy. She gave a sermon. She didn't break. She broke him. She was not just surviving. She was defying. And yet today, in a land that recites their names in every sermon, we silence their daughters. We call it modesty when we erase them. We call it culture when we kill them. We turn their resistance into relics, then light candles at their graves. As though mourning without action ever saved anyone. In 2024 alone, over 5,200 cases of gender-based violence were reported in Pakistan — murders, rapes, forced marriages, suicides, disappearances. We call our daughters Zainab, but fear their fire. We call them Aisha, but shush their speech. We call them Khadijah, but question their independence. We call them Fatima, but scorn their principles. We want them quiet. Covered. Passive. We fear their intellect, police their tone and question their clothing. Every year, we mourn the tragedies of the past and the violence of now and walk in processions. We cry for Karbala and for today's graves. And then? We go back. Back to honour killings, child brides, acid attacks. To clerics who blame women, politicians who mock abuse, courts that shame victims, and homes where daughters are silenced. We mourn the dead but never protect the living. Guilt has never been enough. You cannot grieve Karbala and ignore the women being buried in your own neighbourhood. You cannot claim love for Imam Hussain (AS) while tolerating Yazid's spirit in your own actions. If your grief does not make you just, then it is performance. If your rituals don't translate into compassion, then they are empty. If you cry for the women of Islam but ignore the pain of living women, then you are the problem. Because Karbala was not just a battlefield. It was a woman with a voice. And she didn't whisper. Because Muharram will come and go. But the Yazid of today doesn't need a throne; he rules from homes, offices, police stations, pulpits, parliaments, WhatsApp groups, comment sections, and benches. All he needs is a gun, a platform, and our silence. And too many others, like the armies that watched Karbala unfold, just looked away. Had Bibi Zainab stayed silent, you wouldn't even have a story to tell. So tell it. Live it. Let this be the year your grief grows a spine.

Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan had earlier issued an official directive declaring Thursday, June 26 a public holiday marking the Islamic New Year (1 Muharram, 1447 AH for all ministries, government departments, public institutions, official universities, municipalities, joint services councils, the Greater Amman Municipality, and wholly government-owned companies. However, the directive excluded entities whose nature of work requires otherwise.

210,000 students to sit Tawjihi exam Thursday
Ammon News - Around 210,000 students are scheduled to sit for General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi) on its first day tomorrow, Thursday, which will end on Thursday, July 10th. The first exam session starts at 10:00 am, while the second session starts at 1:00 pm. The Ministry of Education announced that there will be no change on the exam date on June 26 scheduled for June 26, which falls on an official holiday (Islamic New Year holiday), and that the exams will remain on schedule. Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan had earlier issued an official directive declaring Thursday, June 26 a public holiday marking the Islamic New Year (1 Muharram, 1447 AH for all ministries, government departments, public institutions, official universities, municipalities, joint services councils, the Greater Amman Municipality, and wholly government-owned companies.
