Italy will host the America's Cup for the first time in 2027, with Naples set to stage the 38th edition. Burling, 34, links up with the Italians just two months after ending his long-standing relationship with defenders New Zealand, with whom he won the Cup in 2017 and retained it in 2021 and 2024. Burling joined Team NZ after winning gold and silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics sailing with teammate Blair Tuke. The former New Zealand skipper will support both the sailing operations and technical development at Luna Rossa as they prepare for their latest Cup campaign. In addition to his three Olympic medals Burling also has six world titles in the 49er class, and is regarded as one of the sport's leading talents. "I've always loved racing against Luna Rossa and now to join this iconic team is a real honour. The innovation and competitiveness they bring to the Cup has always inspired me," Burling said in a statement. "I'm grateful for the warm welcome and I'm looking forward to working hard alongside a world-class team, doing my part to help win Luna Rossa's first America's Cup." CEO of Luna Rossa Max Sirena said, "Even though his exact role has yet to be defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, reinforcing Luna Rossa's core leadership group and contributing to key areas of our development program. Is High-Speed Sailing the New Formula 1?
Nearly 10,000 fans gathered this past weekend to watch some of the world's top sailors race past the Statue of Liberty, with the iconic New York City skyline as their backdrop. SailGP, a fast-growing sailing league in its fifth season, held the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in New York Harbor for crowds seated in stands along the water's edge. The investors and organizers behind SailGP believe that high-speed boats and exciting athletes can bring young fans to a sport that many consider stuffy and inaccessible. The race was the third in the US Rolex SailGP Championship, following events in Los Angeles and San Francisco; in total, the season will include 14 events on five continents, with hopes to expand in coming years. Attendees saw a brutal race through the rain on Saturday, followed by a final round on Sunday. The Spanish team took the top prize, with New Zealand and France ranking in second and third, respectively. Saturday's weather made it 'a super, super tricky day,' said Anna Weis, an American sailor. 'These are the kind of days [where] as sailors you're coming back and just scratching your head and thinking, Wow, this is really hard.' The league hopes that the international audience that has fueled the explosive growth of Formula 1 will find similar thrills on the water, according to Leah Davis, SailGP's chief marketing officer. According to SailGP's chief marketing officer Leah Davis, the league hopes to capture the excitement of the international audience that has driven Formula 1's explosive growth—and deliver that same level of thrill on the water. 'How do we take sailing to a modern, younger, global audience in a format that makes sense to today's sporting landscape?' she asks. 'We've spent so many years really perfecting the product on the water, but now it's all about how do we scale the experience and the fun? We call it après-sail, which is our take on that guest experience.' Last week, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds became co-owners of the Australian team, while other investors include Anne Hathaway and Issa Rae. DJ Khaled holds a unique role with SailGP as its official Chief Hype Officer. 'Sailing as a sport has always been quite hard to bring to people visibly, to bring close to the spectators,' says Nicole van der Velden, a member of the victorious Spanish team. 'The platform that SailGP has made makes it really attractive for people to watch, [including] people that have never been into sailing. It's really cool to see that it's reaching a bigger public.' Adds Davis: 'Once people see it, it's pretty easy to fall in love within the first few minutes. You can see it's short, sharp flying boats. That's definitely new. We want to be a bit fun…our brand is [about] getting people engaged with a bit of a twinkle in our eye.'

Coming off their season's first victory in San Francisco in March, Diego Botin's team went five points clear into day two and overcame a slump in race five to make the top three. With shifting winds in the shadows of the Statue of Liberty, Spain took control of the showdown on the Hudson River with an impeccable start, arriving three seconds ahead of New Zealand at gate two and three, and held their lead to clinch the victory. Peter Burling's New Zealand, winners in New York last year, lost more distance in the final stages and reached the finish line 43 seconds behind the Spaniards. The win saw Spain move up two places in the championship table on 46 points as they moved above three-times champions Australia, who finished fifth in New York, by one point. But it was not all smooth sailing for Spain on the event's final day. They started off well with a second-place finish in the day's opening race four, 16 seconds behind Martine Grael's Brazil, who won their first-ever fleet race at SailGP since joining the league at the beginning of the season. The Brazilians, who sat fifth after day one, were hopeful of a top-three finish, and were well positioned for just that when they finished fourth in the next race. A tricky race five, meanwhile, did a lot of damage to Spain, who were 11th and dropped from top spot to fourth in the event standings. Botin's crew earned a penalty in the decisive race six but made massive gains and got ahead of Brazil on the second-to-last leg to secure a spot in the event final. Australia held onto their early lead to win the sixth race, grabbing their second victory of the event after they came out on top in the second race on Saturday. France, who sailed very consistently on both days, put in a flawless performance to pick up a win in race five. The season next moves to Europe, first returning to Britain as the fleet races in Portsmouth from July 19-20 before heading to Germany in August for the very first time. Defending series champions Spain, who won the San Francisco event in March, made it look easy despite light winds and strong tides as they took the first win of the day. Competing against one of the most famous skylines in the world on the iconic Hudson River, they sailed away from the fleet and led at mark one before sealing a 14-second lead over second New Zealand on the finish line. After a brilliant opening performance, Spain were off to a turbulent start in the second race but finished fourth, moving up from their last 12th position at the start line. They started at the back once again in the third and last fleet race of the day but moved themselves up into the third to lead overnight on 25 points before day two of the event on Sunday. Spain, led by Olympic champion driver Botin, are five points ahead of second-placed Denmark and France in third. Australia and Brazil were going head to head in the second race before Tom Slingsby's team, now rebranded as the BONDS Flying Roos after new celebrity co-owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds were announced on Thursday, took the win. New Zealand, winners in New York last year, won the third race but 11th spot in the second saw them finish fourth for the day. The race was brought forward due to a storm forecast later in the day, and started two and a half hours earlier than originally scheduled. The global racing championship is back into action after a wingsail defect forced a brief hiatus with the cancellation of May's Rio event.
