‘Move Over' law violations put law enforcement at risk
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (KDVR) — Drivers not obeying Colorado's 'Move Over' law are putting law enforcement officers and others in danger on the roads. The law requires drivers to move at least one lane over when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. The Castle Rock Police Department tells FOX31 a marked patrol car with emergency lights running was totaled when another driver crashed into its back end on Tuesday, causing the car to catch fire. Castle Rock police vehicle totaled in crash on I-25 The officer was standing nearby but was not Sherri Mendez of the Colorado State Patrol told FOX31 she has almost been struck by drivers not abiding by the law while doing her job. 'It just sounds so fast and loud, and you can feel sometimes the car shake,' she said. Mendez says following the Move Over Law is crucial to saving lives on the road and drivers should slow down and move over when they see any vehicle on the side of the road with flashing lights. 'We're doing our job and we expect other people to do their job and be responsible and move over for us,' she said. The Problem Solvers found that at least three accidents per month occurred between August and November of 2024 as a result of drivers violating the Move Over Law, including a fatal accident in Golden that killed 33-year-old police officer Evan Dunn, who had served in the Army as an aviation officer and Blackhawk pilot. The driver in that case was arrested for vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and violating the 'Move Over' Law. Mendez says the State Patrol motto is 'no one's final resting place should be on the roadway' and encourages drivers to consider the harm that can come from failing to consider the well-being of others by following the law. 'Think of everybody on the shoulder of the road as their family members — us included,' she said. The Colorado State Patrol is still investigating the crash in Castle Rock. New York State trooper launched over guardrail after semi-truck plowed into patrol car during traffic stop on Thruway
A New York State trooper was seriously injured when a semi-truck plowed into his parked patrol car on the side of a busy upstate highway – obliterating the cruiser and sending the cop flying over a guardrail, police said. The freakish incident unfolded around 12:39 p.m. Friday as the trooper was conducting a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Schenectady County, just 25 miles southwest of Albany. The trailer-less tractor was traveling westbound on Interstate 90 when it slammed into the squad car, according to state police, which shared startling images of the collision. 4 The collision obliterated the New York State Police cruiser Friday afternoon. New York State Police/Facebook Police said the impact hurled the trooper, who was standing on the passenger side of a Honda Odyssey involved in the traffic stop, over the metal barrier and tumbling down an embankment. 'The incident is a powerful reminder: New York's Move Over Law is not optional,' police said, referring to a state law that requires motorists to slow down and shift lanes when a vehicle is stopped on an Empire State roadway. 4 The disastrous incident occurred on the New York State Thruway while the trooper was conducting a traffic stop. Images of the wreck showed the mangled cop car perched atop the flattened guardrail, its rear end sheared off, car hood damaged, windshield shattered and airbags deployed. The cruiser also smashed into the back of the Honda, leaving it severely damaged and shuttering the thruway for hours. 4 The trooper was sent to the hospital with serious injuries. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas State Police is reminding drivers that moving over for first responders is a state law. The Arkansas Move Over Law requires drivers to move over not only for emergency vehicles but also for vehicles operated by the Arkansas Department of Transportation, utility vehicles, tow trucks, and other authorized vehicles displaying flashing, revolving, or rotating lights in blue, red, amber, white, or green, according to ASP officials. If changing lanes is unsafe or impossible, the driver should reduce their speed according to the conditions of the street, road, or highway where the authorized vehicle is stopped or parked. Officials said anyone who violates the law may face fines ranging from $250 to $1,000, possible jail time and risk losing their driver's license. ASP Col. Mike Hagar said moving over is more than a courtesy. 'When you see flashing lights, move over or slow down,' Hagar said. 'This is the law and a responsibility we all share.'
