Former Hollyoaks star Ricky Whittle makes surprise appearance at Monte-Carlo Television Festival after claiming he was 'done' chasing Hollywood roles

Former Hollyoaks star Ricky Whittle made a surprise appearance at the 64th Monte-Carlo Television Festival on Tuesday. The Brit, 45, shot to fame in 2006 as Calvin Valentine on Hollyoaks, enjoying a four-year stint on the northern soap before his character was brutally murdered. Ricky moved on to bigger things after his time on Channel 4 came to an end, with the actor making the move across the pond as he bagged roles in hit American shows such as The 100 and American Gods. He turned his back on Hollywood in 2023, telling MailOnline he was 'done' with America and its 'crazy politics' and was planning to move away from Los Angeles. But just a couple of years later it seems Ricky may be considering a return to the big time as the hunky actor made a surprise appearance at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival on Tuesday. He arrived on the red carpet in southern France looking typically dapper in a black tux ahead of his role presenting the festival's Golden Nymph Awards Ceremony alongside Shy'm, 39. The duo posed for photos together, with Ricky playfully making sure the spotlight was on the French actress as she put on a leggy display in an eye-catching black and white dress. Later in the evening the pair suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction while performing a dance routine on-stage as Shy'm spilled out her outfit momentarily. Ricky had too been in attendance a day earlier, with the star showing off his enviable physique in a see-through black vest top teamed with a pair of baggy trousers. He posed for photos alongside the glamorous Adriana Karembeu, 54, who stunned in a black blouse, a coordinated skirt and a pair of high heels. Whittle was last seen on television while playing Mickey Barnes in one episode of The Rookie, a show following a police officer in Los Angeles. Prior to that the 45-year-old had enjoyed a quiet couple of years work-wise after the end of American Gods in 2021. Despite all of his success across the pond, during his interview with MailOnline in 2023 Ricky did not completely rule out a possible return to the British soap one day. The duo posed for photos together, with Ricky playfully making sure the spotlight was on the French actress as she put on a leggy display in an eye-catching black and white dress He said: 'Would I ever do a soap again? Probably not, but for fun why not, I don't care as I'm in a fortunate position, where I don't need to work. 'I haven't been in Hollyoaks for 20 years but at the end of the day you can never shy away from where you came from.' He also opened up about the influence his time on Hollyoaks had on his acting skills, saying: 'If it wasn't for Hollyoaks I wouldn't be where I am now. 'Hollyoaks is an education, you're learning 12 to 15 scripts every day and halfway through a day, new pages are coming down and it's like "learn them now" and you just get it done and don't think about'. 'My character went from being the good guy, to the bad guy to the club owner, to the policeman, to your sister's on drugs, to you'd killed someone and then he's back to life - it's like you go through a whole gambit of emotions'. 'If that's not great education for an actor- I don't know what is.' He added: 'I would never look down on soap actors because they're the ones that are putting in five days a week and I've got nothing but love for those guys and what that show did for me.'

Rachel Griffiths Says ‘Older Women Are Having a Moment,' Gushes Over ‘The Last Showgirl' and Jamie Lee Curtis ‘Dancing on That F—ing Table': ‘I Was in Awe of That Girl!'

According to Rachel Griffiths, whether it's cinema or TV, 'older women are having a moment.' 'We all know that's true: Demi Moore is a brand. There are so many great actresses of that generation. Take Helen Mirren in 'MobLand' right now, for fuck's sake. I loved Pamela [Anderson] in 'The Last Showgirl' and Jamie Lee Curtis dancing on that fucking table was the greatest moment I saw last year. I was in awe of that girl!' More from Variety 'Vanguard' Wins Series Award at Monte-Carlo Television Festival as Robin Wright Takes Crystal Nymph Judith Light Is Ready for Ridley Scott Exec-Produced 'The Terror: Devil in Silver' and for Women to Claim Their Space: 'Negotiate, for God's Sake!' Netflix's Cannabis Drama 'Amsterdam Empire' Gives Famke Janssen the Role She's Been Waiting For - and She Finally Gets to Speak in Dutch Directed by Gia Coppola, 'The Last Showgirl' focused on veteran dancers in Vegas. Griffiths isn't jealous of her colleagues' roles, however. 'If it's good, that means the actor is delivering. For me to go 'I wish I had it,' I just never have that thought. She's already inhabiting it. It's very rare that you're thinking: 'I could have done it better.' Usually, you're just bedazzled by the choices you wouldn't have made.' Recently seen in Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell rom-com 'Anyone But You,' the Australian actor has become known for hit shows 'Six Feet Under' and 'Brothers & Sisters.' Joking about being in a 'pretty, dumb' jury at Monte-Carlo Television Festival as opposed to 'sad, serious' doc jury – 'We're here because we're unemployed. Come on, you can say it,' she said to co-juror John Reardon – Griffiths underlined: women watch television. 'I watch television when I'm doing the laundry, when I'm folding socks, when I'm cooking. You know, I didn't go to the cinema for years. I was too tired. Women are never going to stop demanding to see themselves represented authentically,' she added. 'We Australians, we fought in World War I with a poster that said: 'Free trip to Europe.' I came to a jury in Monaco instead – I had it much better than my grandfather.' During a chat with journalists, Griffiths – whose show 'Madam' was awarded at the fest only last year – admitted she hoped to see more diverse shows. 'I would say the selection was different to the broader palette of the stuff I'm digesting. There wasn't a huge amount of diversity in terms of ethnic communities. There wasn't a huge diversity of representation. That's probably just timing, but I wouldn't necessarily take it as representative of a litmus test of [what's happening] at this moment.' Griffiths has been working with Blackfella Films, founded by Rachel Perkins and focusing on Indigenous Australian stories. She exec-produced and starred in 'Total Control' alongside Deborah Mailman. 'It's very close to my heart. It makes stories better when their content is reflective of the places we live. I hope this rollback of diversity and inclusion doesn't impact our industry, because it makes characters more compelling, and it makes television more interesting. I hope it wasn't just one moment in history when we got 'Beef' and these great casts coming from non-Caucasian backgrounds.' In her own work, Griffiths refuses to 'feed the beast.' 'If the algorithm wants more 'angry' shows, I'm not going to start doing it.' But she noticed a new demand for returnable procedurals. 'The inclusion of a show like 'Good Cop/Bad Cop' [in the competition] shows people are trying to find returnable procedurals that bring you joy and do it in a fresh way. When I'm out pitching and having discussions around the world, I hear: 'Do you have an idea for a returnable procedural?',' she says. 'It's just so hard to make those limited series. They are hard to sell unless you have a big name, like Toni Collette or Colin Farrell.' Television star of the 1970s who also appeared on I'm A Celeb looks unrecognisable as he steps out for Monte-Carlo festival - but can YOU guess who he is?

A television star of the 1970s looked unrecognisable as he posed for a photo at the 64th Monte-Carlo television festival. He's been on our screens for more than 60 years having first landed a role in cinema in Shirley Clarke's 1964 film The Cool World. The actor went on to make his presence felt in a number of films of the early 1970s including Shaft, Foxy Brown and Huckleberry Finn before landing the role he is most famous for later in the decade. Transitioning into television, the star bagged a part in Starsky & Hutch - a series following Detectives Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson (David Soul) and Dave Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) as they fought crime on the streets of the fictional Bay City, California. The mystery man in-question played a golden hearted street informant who came to be a much-loved character during the era - but would you recognise him all these years later? From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the The star pictured kicking back in the sun on Tuesday is none other than American actor Antonio Fargas, 78, who played the golden-hearted street informant Huggy Bear in Starsky and Hutch. Some 50 years after the show first aired, the father-of-one attended the festival sporting a stylish white button-up shirt along with a pair of cream coloured slacks. Sporting a new-look goatee beard and seeming in great spirits, the grey fox posed for pictures on the coast in picturesque Monaco before heading to the Golden Nymph Awards Nominees Party at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel. While he is arguably most famous for his role in Starsky & Hutch, Antonio's career actually continued to flourish after the show finished. He has appeared in more than 50 movies and TV shows during an extended career in the world of acting, including a role as a 90-year-old witch doctor in The Great White Hope and as Baz in the British boxing film Sucker Punch in 2006. British viewers may also remember Antonio from an appearance he made on the hugely popular ITV show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! during series 4 in 2004. Antonio's inclusion on the Ant and Dec fronted show was somewhat short-lived however, with the 78-year-old the fourth celebrity to be voted out. But he's no doubt best known as Huggy Bear, with Antonio admitting that it's 'special' to be remembered as the character. During an interview with Gloria Hunniford in 2006, he said: 'It's amazing, thank goodness I'm very comfortable with being a character-based actor. 'After so many years in the business to still identify with a show that was so special to me, it's amazing. 'I just enjoy my life, I've been able to do lots of other things and I'm still creating things and new adventures, so I'm very happy.' Speaking about what made Starsky & Hutch so successful, Antonio added: 'I think the main attraction was relationships. 'There was these two guys (Starsky & Hutch) who cared for each other and had each other's back, plus they were two good-looking guys. 'You also had a car, and music and clothes and a hip-talking informer and you don't think about what it's going to be and if it's going to last forever. 'It was a job, and we worked hard, had fun and tried to make it good. And we did a good job.' Antonio has one son, Justin Fargos, who studied at the University of Southern California before going on to enjoy a a professional career in the NFL, playing seven seasons as a running back for the Oakland Raiders.
