New arrival picked as potential 'player of the tournament' for Chelsea
The London is Blue podcast are in Atalanta right now getting ready to watch Chelsea kick off at the Club World Cup, and they picked out two new players they're really excited to see in Blue in the coming weeks. Santos (and Essugo) picked as ones to watch by podcast fans Presenter Nick Verlaney had one player on his mind above all others: Advertisement 'Andrey Santos. He is going to do really well… I just look at him, he's coming off this great season,' Verlaney said. 'I think he's going to be our player of the tournament, I think he's really going to step up. And he's going to need to, right. With the balance of resting your players, you're not going to be able to get away with playing Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, obviously Romeo Lavia hasn't shown himself fit enough to take over one of their spots alone. 'Watching the midfield in this tournament is going to be fascinating, I'm super excited to see what Andrey Santos does and what Dario Essugo does.' You can see their thoughts in the clip embedded here: Chelsea's 2 new boys will be thrown right into the mix We totally agree, and we agree with their logic too. Caicedo and Fernandez were among the most used players last season, AND they've just been playing international games. The management team will be looking to play them as little as possible, especially in the group stages, and that means the likes of Santos and Essugo stepping up right from the jump. Advertisement Starting against LAFC is a nice introduction, Flamengo should be a little tougher, but then Tunis to close out the group is another soft one. Ideally we can make it to the knockout stage with a minimum of minutes played for our first choice central midfielders.

Florian Wirtz arrives in England for Liverpool medical ahead of £116m move
Florian Wirtz has landed in England for his Liverpool medical ahead of a British record £116m move to the club. Liverpool came to a verbal agreement with Bayer Levekusen on Wednesday evening after seeing three bids turned down, with a fourth and final offer worth an initial £100m plus add-ons being accepted. He landed at Manchester Airport this afternoon, from where he will travel to Merseyside to finalise a deal, with a medical penned in for Friday. Wirtz also attracted attention from Bayern Munich but told the German champions he wanted to go to Liverpool and agreed personal terms with the club two weeks ago. The new English champions are believed to have impressed him with their plan while Manchester City, who also showed an interest, switched their focus to Tijjani Reijnders of AC Milan and Lyon's Rayan Cherki. Wirtz smashes Liverpool's transfer record as well as edging the wider British record, which is currently held by Moises Caicedo 's £115m switch to Chelsea. The Reds have previously paid £75m for Virgil van Dijk and £64m, rising to £85m, for Darwin Nunez. Wirtz, who found the net for Germany against Portugal in the Nations League last week, has scored 34 goals in the last two seasons for Leverkusen, helping them win a first league title in 2023/24 across an unbeaten domestic season, when he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Year. Having always been touted as one of Germany's next big things, his supersonic rise to prominence over the past couple seasons comes after a suffering a detrimental ACL injury in 2022, which saw him out of action for 266 days. They are also in talks with Bournemouth, who want £45m for left-back Milos Kerkez, and could commit almost £200m to new signings within a few weeks.

Chelsea vs Flamengo to have red card-happy chemistry professor as referee as fans fear for Moises Caicedo
CHELSEA'S next Club World Cup match is set to be refereed by card-happy whistler Ivan Barton. The Salvadoran, 34, has walked an unusual path to top level officiating - having worked as a chemistry professor. 2 Brainy Barton hails from Santa Ana and earned a degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of El Salvador. Having subsequently lectured at his alma mater, Barton has also quickly risen up the ranks of officiating. He was the third-youngest ref at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and actually took charge of England 's 3-0 win over Senegal in the round of 16. On that occasion Barton only dished out one yellow card, to former Chelsea star Kalidou Koulibaly. But often he is a lot more trigger-happy. During the 2024-25 campaign, Barton handed out an incredible 122 yellows and eight reds in just 23 matches. These games came across several competitions, including the Salvadoran top flight, Saudi Pro League and international qualifiers. Barton reffed the CONCACAF Nations League semi-final between the USA and Mexico in 2023 - incredibly dishing out FOUR red cards and nine yellows. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK 2 Seeing Barton's disciplinary record ahead of Chelsea's clash with Flamengo, fans were left astonished. And several worried for their reigning player of the year Moises Caicedo. Chelsea launch Club World Cup campaign with 2-0 victory over LAFC in Atlanta The midfielder impressed during his second Chelsea campaign, but has a habit of picking up plenty of cards. Caicedo, 23, has been booked 28 times across two seasons at Stamford Bridge - including 11 in the Premier League last term. Seeing Barton's record, one fan posted on X: "Do not start Caicedo." While a second joked: "Caicedo red incoming!" A third pleaded: "Definitely need to rest Caicedo then." And another added: "Caicedo red in the 9th minute." Enzo Maresca 's side got their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start on Monday, as they defeated an LAFC side featuring Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud 2-0 in Atlanta. The Blues will face Brazilians Flamengo in Philadelphia tomorrow, before staying in the Pennsylvania city to battle Tunisian side ES Tunis on Tuesday night.
