Dry, hot weather to persist until September, says MetMalaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The ongoing Southwest Monsoon since May 10 has led to dry and hot weather conditions nationwide, with a high number of rainless days expected to continue until September. Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said thunderstorms and heavy rain are still occurring from time to time, particularly in the western regions of the peninsula, northern Sarawak, and western Sabah during the mornings. He added that similar weather is also seen in the interior areas of the peninsula, Sarawak, and Sabah in the evenings and at night. "The squall line phenomenon, which brings heavy rain and strong winds to the west coast of the peninsula, northern Sarawak and western Sabah, may also occur especially in the early morning when atmospheric conditions are favourable," he said when contacted. He said during the seven-day period from June 10 to 16, most weather stations recorded temperatures below 35°C, except for Batu Gajah in Perak which recorded 36.7°C on June 15, and Limbang, which hit 36.5°C on June 13. "The temperature readings have dropped slightly at all stations following rainfall in recent days," he said. "At present, MetMalaysia has not issued any heatwave warnings due to the rainfall observed over the past few days." On sea conditions, he said a Category One strong wind and rough sea warning had been issued, with waves reaching up to 3.5m high and wind speeds of up to 50km/h in the northern Straits of Melaka and Phuket waters. The advisory remains in effect until Thursday, June 19. Commenting on the El Nino phenomenon, he said it was expected to remain in a neutral phase, with overall weather conditions likely to stay at average levels. "According to agencies monitoring the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the phenomenon is expected to remain in a neutral phase until October, and during this phase, weather conditions are forecast to remain average." KUALA LUMPUR: The current spell of hot weather affecting the country is not unusual, but rather a typical occurrence during the annual Southwest Monsoon season. The monsoon, which began on May 10, is expected to persist until mid-September. Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the season was characterised by drier conditions, due to lower humidity and a more stable atmosphere. "Malaysia is currently experiencing the Southwest Monsoon phase, which naturally brings drier weather, reduced cloud cover, and less rainfall. "This results in increased solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface, subsequently raising daily temperatures. "Rainfall will be significantly reduced during this period, with more dry days expected nationwide," he told Berita Harian. Nevertheless, Mohd Hisham said that isolated incidents of heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms might still occur in some areas. Among the affected regions are the western parts of Peninsular Malaysia, northern Sarawak and western Sabah during the early mornings, and the interior and eastern regions of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as inland Sarawak and Sabah during the afternoon and early evening. He said weather forecasts up to June 4 suggested continued hot and dry conditions in most parts of the country. "Wind convergence zones, which typically bring heavy rain, are currently concentrated in neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Myanmar. "So far, the maximum daily temperatures for May have ranged between 33°C and 36°C, and are expected to remain at this level in the coming week due to limited rainfall," he said. Mohd Hisham also advised the public to stay hydrated and reduce exposure to outdoor activities. "Open burning should be strictly avoided as it can contribute to haze and environmental pollution," he added.

Saudi Arabia to sight Zulhijjah crescent moon today to set dates for Arafah day, Aidiladha
MAKKAH: The Saudi Arabian government will conduct the crescent moon sighting today (May 27) to determine the date of 1 Zulhijjah, which will then establish the date for the Day of Arafah and Hari Raya Aidiladha, said the head of the Malaysian haj delegation Mohd Hisham Harun. 'The official decision is expected to be announced after Maghrib prayers (local time),' he told reporters after visiting the Masyair operations area here on Monday. Mohd Hisham said that to ensure the proper observance of religious rites, the Panel of Haj Guidance Reference Experts for the 1446H season has determined that the midpoint of the night on 10 Zulhijjah will begin at 11.36 pm. 'This setting of time is crucial as it marks the beginning of the overnight stay (mabit) in Muzdalifah, the time for the stoning ritual at Jamrah Kubra, the start of the initial tahallul (hair trimming), and the commencement of the Haj Tawaf,' he said. He said the minimum duration for mabit in Mina on the nights of 11th, 12th, and 13th Zulhijjah has been set at no less than 4 hours and 35 minutes after Maghrib, following religious guidelines. Meanwhile, Mohd Hisham said the tents in Arafah and Mina for the Masyair operations involving Malaysian pilgrims are over 95 per cent ready and are expected to be fully completed within the next three days. 'Large tents can accommodate more than 200 people at a time, and each tent is clearly labelled with the maktab (accommodation) number and tent number. Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) will be allocated tent numbers in Arafah and Mina, and pilgrims can soon check these details via the TH Hujjaj app,' he said. The Masyair operation is the peak of the haj pilgrimage, which involves the movement of Malaysian pilgrims to Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina over five days from 8 to 13 Zulhijjah, to fulfill the essential and obligatory rites of the pilgrimage. Mohd Hisham said pilgrims would be placed in open areas without tents in Muzdalifah according to their maktab groupings, and the Masyarik authorities would provide mats and carpets throughout the mabit area to ensure their comfort. 'TH hopes that pilgrims will practice tolerance and assist one another while in Mina, given the limited tent space, with each tent accommodating between 16 to 20 pilgrims,' he said. He said the facilities provided in Arafah and Mina include sufficient public toilets, ready-to-eat meals delivered to pilgrims' tents three times a day, and temporary field medical consultation services operating 24 hours a day.
