Putin makes Iran-Israeli mediation pitch in call with UAE president
The leaders of Russia and the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday warned of 'extremely negative consequences' from the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, as President Vladimir Putin pushed himself as a possible mediator. In a phone call with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Putin 'confirmed Russia's readiness to provide mediation assistance to promote dialogue between the parties to the conflict,' the Kremlin said in a statement. The two leaders 'expressed deep concern over the continuing escalation of the Iranian-Israeli conflict, which could have extremely negative consequences for the entire region,' Moscow added. Israel launched a massive bombing campaign on Friday that prompted Iran to respond with its own missile and drone strikes. Russia is close to Iran, having boosted military ties amid its offensive on Ukraine. But Moscow also strives for good relations with Israel.

Non-oil exports alone grew by an impressive 41% annually. National trade goals shead of schedule Sheikh Mohammed stated that the UAE's strategic goal of growing non-oil foreign trade to AED 4 trillion by 2031 is expected to be achieved within just two years—four years ahead of schedule. In 2024, the country's GDP grew by 4% to reach AED 1.77 trillion, with the non-oil sector contributing a dominant 75.5% to the national economy. Confidence in continued prosperity He emphasised that the UAE's economic performance is reaching new historic highs across various indicators of stability and prosperity. He attributed this momentum to the leadership of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and the hard work of thousands of dedicated teams focused on realizing the UAE's global economic ambitions. Q1 2025 trade performance overview The UAE's non-oil foreign trade in the first quarter of 2025 (January to March) reached AED 835 billion, up 18.6% from Q1 2024. Non-oil exports totaled AED 177.3 billion—a 40.7% year-on-year and 15.7% quarter-on-quarter increase—accounting for over 21% of total non-oil trade for the first time in the nation's history. Re-rxports and imports Re-exports rose by 6% annually to AED 189.1 billion, while imports climbed 17.2% year-on-year to AED 468.6 billion, despite a 1.7% quarter-on-quarter decline. Strong trade growth with key partners Trade with the UAE's top 10 trading partners grew by 20.2% in Q1 2025, outpacing the 16.9% growth with other countries. Notable increases included India: up 31%, Saudi Arabia: more than doubled (127%), Turkiye: up 8.3%, and China: up 9.6%. These figures underscore the UAE's growing role as a global trade hub and its success in diversifying economic partnerships.

Pakistan PM to discuss economic, regional issues with UAE president during Abu Dhabi visit
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will meet United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during an official visit to the Gulf state tomorrow, with discussions expected to focus on economic cooperation and recent regional developments, the Pakistani foreign office said on Wednesday. Sharif's trip comes amid Pakistan's deepening ties with Gulf nations, including the UAE, as it strives to revive its economy through export-led growth and foreign investment. The UAE is Islamabad's third-largest trading partner and a major investor. It is also home to over a million Pakistani expatriates and has been a critical ally during Islamabad's recent financial crisis, depositing funds in Pakistan's central bank to help unlock International Monetary Fund (IMF) assistance. 'Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will undertake an official visit to the United Arab Emirates on 12 June 2025,' the foreign office said in a statement. 'Prime Minister Sharif will hold high-level meetings with the UAE leadership, including a bilateral meeting with the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan,' it added. 'A wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest and concern will be discussed during the high-level interactions.' The foreign office said the visit reflected the 'deep-rooted fraternal ties' between the two countries, marked by 'mutual trust, shared values and close cooperation across multiple sectors.' In January 2024, Pakistan and the UAE signed agreements exceeding $3 billion for cooperation in railways, economic zones and infrastructure. Last month, Sharif held a phone call with the UAE president in which he expressed satisfaction over growing ties and pledged to transform the relationship into a 'mutually beneficial economic partnership.' During the call, the two leaders also discussed tensions between Pakistan and India that recently escalated into cross-border hostilities involving missile strikes, drones and artillery fire. Sharif thanked the UAE for its 'constructive diplomatic role' in defusing the crisis and said the Gulf nation had 'always stood by Pakistan, through thick and thin.' The UAE is also a strategically favorable destination for Pakistan due to its proximity, minimizing freight costs. Abu Dhabi approves $1.3bln housing benefits package for citizens
Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved a housing benefits package worth AED4.62 billion ($1.3 billion) ahead of Eid Al Adha, that will cater to the housing needs of 3,052 Emirati citizens. This comes following the directives of President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. The approved housing benefits package includes housing loans amounting to AED4.4 billion benefiting 2,862 citizens, and exemptions from housing loan repayments totalling AED212 million benefiting 190 citizens, limited-income retirees and beneficiaries of deceased citizens, reported Wam. The disbursement of the second housing package of 2025 comes ahead of Eid Al Adha and reflects the leadership's ongoing commitment to comprehensive development, enhancing the wellbeing and stability of Emirati families, empowering them to actively contribute to the nation's progress, in line with UAE Year of Community objectives aimed at strengthening social cohesion and reinforcing community solidarity. This package brings the total housing benefits delivered to citizens in Abu Dhabi in 2025 to AED11.38 billion, it stated. Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, said: "The new housing benefits package reflects the leadership's commitment to empowering citizens through the provision of quality housing that promotes family stability and elevates quality of life."
