Türkiye to Host 51st OIC Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul
Mohamed Mandour The 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) will be held in Istanbul on June 21-22, under the chairmanship of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Ahead of the gathering, a Senior Officials Meeting was held in April 27 and 29 at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as part of the preparations for the high-level conference. Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz assumed the chairmanship of the Senior Officials Meeting from the head of the Cameroonian delegation. Yilmaz delivered the opening speech, during the Senior Officials meeting, while OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha also addressed the participants. During the two-day meeting in Jeddah, senior representatives from the 57 member states discussed draft resolutions on various issues, and reviewed reports outlining the OIC's general policies and principles. The draft resolutions adopted by the senior officials will be presented for approval at the June Council session. When Türkiye hosts the CFM meeting in Istanbul, it will assume the one-year rotating chairmanship of the OIC — the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations. Al-Azhar Grand Imam Meets Serbia's PM to Discuss Strengthening Academic, Religious Cooperation
Mohamed Mandour Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders has met with Dr. Đuro Macut, Prime Minister of Serbia, to discuss ways to enhance academic and religious cooperation in support of Serbia's Muslim community. He affirmed Al-Azhar's commitment to addressing the needs of Serbian Muslims by training imams and preachers, equipping them to tackle contemporary intellectual and religious challenges. These efforts focus on promoting human fraternity, fostering positive coexistence, facilitating the integration of Muslims into Western societies, clarifying women's rights in Islam, countering extremist ideologies with reason and logic, and establishing an Arabic language center in Serbia to serve the Muslim community and teach the language of the Holy Qur'an. He also emphasized that peace and mutual understanding should serve as the foundation for coexistence among all people. He further urged for efforts to instill patriotism in youth and to embrace diversity and differences, which he described as a divinely ordained universal principle essential for humanity's continuity. For his part, the Prime Minister of Serbia expressed his pleasure at meeting His Eminence, highlighting Serbia's dedication to strengthening ties with Islamic countries and institutions. ICESCO, Malaysia Discuss Partnership for Inclusive, Sustainable Education
Mohamed Mandour As part of his participation in the annual ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting, Dr. Salim M. AlMalik, Director-General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Fadhlina Sidek, Malaysia's Minister of Education. The meeting focused on exploring ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides in the fields of education, innovation, and heritage preservation. Her Excellency the Minister presented key initiatives of the Malaysian Ministry of Education, which have made the country's education system a comprehensive model for achieving the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4). She noted that education in Malaysia is guided by a holistic vision that values quality, equity, and sustainability. For his part, Dr. AlMalik commended Malaysia's educational experience and stressed the importance of strengthening international partnerships to achieve inclusive education for all. He also highlighted ICESCO's initiatives in this regard, including its ongoing cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in support of the international PISA assessments. Dr. AlMalik invited Dr. Sidek to participate in the third Ministerial Conference on PISA, which will be organized by ICESCO in Samarkand in November 2025, and is considered an important platform for exchanging expertise and encouraging educational policy reform in Member States. The meeting also touched on the Greening Education initiative, launched by ICESCO in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, which aims to develop long-term strategic visions in the field of education. Dr. AlMalik also underscored the importance of integrating values of peace into school curricula and embedding them into the educational policies of Member States. The two sides also discussed the issue of girls' education in Afghanistan. MCE Calls for Confronting Hate, intolerance
Mohamed Mandour The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, affirms that combating hate speech, racism, intolerance, and discrimination is a moral, religious, and humanitarian imperative—especially in light of the growing global rise in violence, incitement, and social polarization, all of which pose a serious threat to communal harmony and human coexistence. In a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, observed annually on June 18, the Council warned of the dangers of turning a blind eye to verbal incitement, racist practices, and exclusionary rhetoric—particularly within digital and media spaces—which fuel hatred and resentment and create fertile ground for extremism and violence. The Council stressed the urgent need to enact binding legislation to curb such harmful discourse. The statement emphasized that Islamic law forbids anything that incites division, hatred, or discord. As the Qur'an states: 'And tell My ˹believing˺ servants to say what is best' [Qur'an 17:53], and as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught: 'A kind word is charity.' Islam calls on its followers to uphold the values of compassion, mutual respect, and tolerance; to embrace diversity and pluralism; and to strengthen the principles of human fraternity—values that form the true foundation of peace and stability in societies and nations. The Muslim Council of Elders continues to lead efforts to promote dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect through several pioneering initiatives, including East-West Dialogue, Intra-Islamic Dialogue, the International Peace Convoys, and the Emerging Peacemakers Forum, among others. The Document on Human Fraternity, signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, and the late Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, clearly states that religions have never been a source of war, conflict, hatred, or extremism.
